The transition from conventional silica nanoparticle (SiNP) production based on purified alkoxysilanes and high-temperature flame hydrolysis of silicon tetrachloride to renewable and waste-derived silicon resources requires more than precursor substitution. It requires a mechanistic understanding of how feedstock mineralogy, silicon speciation, impurity chemistry, and processing history propagate through dissolution, nucleation, condensation, gelation, aging, drying, and pore evolution to determine material performance, environmental burden, and manufacturing feasibility. Although previous reviews have established the technical feasibility of producing silica from secondary resources, their predominant organization by feedstock, synthesis route, or application provides limited ability to explain why nominally similar processes generate materials with markedly different structural and functional properties. This review addresses these through a resource-pull, feedstock-to-function framework that links resource chemistry and process design to critical material attributes, application-specific specifications, sustainability, and scale-up requirements. Agricultural residues, industrial by-products, geothermal resources, waste glass, and fluorosilicate streams are critically compared according to silicon form and phase, reactivity, impurity profile, compositional variability, purification demand, and attainable product quality. Particular attention is given to waste-derived alkaline silicate systems, in which molecular, oligomeric, and colloidal silica coexist and therefore require characterization beyond bulk SiO2 concentration. Established and emerging processing strategies, including controlled combustion and alkaline extraction, alkali fusion, ambient-pressure drying, microwave and mechanochemical activation, biogenic and biomimetic templating, and continuous processing, are evaluated according to their mechanistic effects, technological maturity, structural control, and demands for energy, reagents, water, solvents, effluent treatment, and capital. Across these routes, gelation and aging emerge as critical transfer stages through which feedstock composition is translated into network connectivity, pore architecture, shrinkage behavior, and ultimately functional performance. Evidence from secondary-source aerogels further shows that properly controlled waste-derived systems can attain BET surface areas of approximately 350–500 m2 g−1, within the textural range of many alkoxide-derived materials, indicating that feedstock variability, impurity management, and process control are more important constraints than an inherently lower performance ceiling. On this basis, this review proposes a minimum evidence framework comprising feedstock traceability, intermediate-speciation and colloidal characterization, silicon mass balance, gelation and aging metrics, application-specific qualification criteria, performance-normalized life cycle and techno-economic assessment, process analytical control, and staged pilot validation. Collectively, these principles provide a mechanistically grounded basis for moving sustainable silica synthesis beyond isolated proof-of-concept demonstrations toward reproducible, scalable, application-matched, and commercially credible manufacturing platforms. Play is considered the primary activity of children, and toys are their essential tools. However, the toy industry extends beyond children, constituting a significant economic sector with annual revenues exceeding one hundred billion dollars and generating substantial environmental consequences. These include resource consumption, pollution during manufacturing, energy use, consumables during operation, and waste generation at the end of the product’s life cycle. This research presents a study of the state of the art of ecodesign in the toy sector and its potential within this field. Through the analysis of the available scientific literature and the expertise of the Toy Technology Institute (AIJU), experiences from companies in the sector have been identified and classified according to the ecodesign strategy wheel. Simultaneously, a survey of industry stakeholders compared the current situation with that of 30 years ago. The results reveal perceptual progress that is uneven across dimensions, with the strongest advances in materials and production, moderate gains in distribution and end-of-life strategies, and limited improvement in product durability, while innovation in new product concepts shows the highest growth. Correlation analyses indicate that experience and professional background influence how sustainability progress is perceived. Although most improvements have been motivated by cost reduction and regulatory compliance rather than environmental awareness, recent trends reflect a growing corporate commitment to ecological innovation. For consumers, it remains essential to overcome misconceptions about eco-friendly toys, while companies must continue to invest in new materials, technologies, and design strategies that support the transition toward circular and long-lasting toy products. Industry 5.0 places humans at the center of production systems, requiring technologies that integrate operators as active components while adapting dynamically to their physical and cognitive needs. Within this context, facilitating the learning of complex concepts becomes essential, particularly through intuitive and accessible approaches. The objective of this work is to develop a hands-on educational platform for the introduction to human–robot interaction, aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4). The platform is designed to support the experiential learning of key aspects of collaboration between human and robots while simultaneously familiarizing students with practical elements, including programming, hardware implementation with microcontrollers and sensors, and the use of the Robot Operating System (ROS). The developed system is based on the use of inertial measurement units (IMUs) to capture kinematic signals, enabling real-time interaction with a collaborative robot. The platform supports both translational and orientation control, with a maximum latency of 0.3 s, ensuring responsive and effective human–robot interaction. The hands-on approach will allow students to interact directly with the test bench, putting previously learned theoretical concepts into practice, according to the principle of learn-by-doing. The steel sector is one of the main contributors to carbon dioxide emissions among the industrial activities. It is mostly the use of carbon-rich blast furnaces and natural gas direct reduction processes that cause this. Hydrogen-based direct iron reduction (H-DRI) is a demonstrated method of lowering steel production carbon emissions by using hydrogen rather than carbon monoxide as the reducing agent; therefore, water vapor is released instead of carbon dioxide. This work offers a detailed analysis of the trends, operating concepts, industrial-scale trials, difficulties, and advantages of H-DRI. It is well supported by both energetic and reaction rate considerations that hydrogen is an efficient agent for the reduction of iron oxides to iron metal, giving metallization rates up to those of the traditional processes and at the same time significantly reducing GHG emissions. Moreover, industrial trials confirm that the method is technically feasible on a large scale, which is not yet realized because green hydrogen is very expensive, infrastructure needs are high, and there are still hurdles to be overcome in process optimization, such as water vapor management, pellet quality, and reactor design. According to the studies of product life cycles, if the hydrogen is extracted from renewable sources of energy, then the reduction in CO can be as high as 90%. The article also discusses different aspects of the economy, environment, and law that are already there and the ones that need to be developed so that research, technological breakthroughs, and industrial harmonization can be directed to the right spots. Practical deployment requires control of hydrogen supply, optimizing reduction processes, integrating renewable energy, and regulatory support. The results offer operational insights to the steel industry, policymakers, and academia on the path to sustainable, energy-efficient, and carbon-neutral steel production while retaining the metallurgical quality and industrial scale of the steelmaking processes. Coal gangue, as a predominant solid byproduct of the global coal industry, poses severe environmental challenges because of its massive accumulation and low utilization rate. This review systematically synthesizes and analyzes published experimental and analytical studies on the dual-pathway utilization of coal gangue in concrete, including Pathway 1 (aggregate substitution) and Pathway 2 (cementitious activity activation). While the application of coal gangue aggregates is traditionally limited by their inherent high porosity and lower mechanical strength than those of natural aggregates, this review demonstrates that performance barriers can be effectively overcome. Through multiscale modification strategies—including surface densification, biological mineralization (MICP), and matrix synergy—the interfacial defects are significantly mitigated, allowing for feasible substitution in structural concrete. Conversely, for the mineral admixture pathway, controlled thermal activation is identified as a key process to optimize the phase transformation of kaolinite, thereby significantly enhancing pozzolanic reactivity and long-term durability. According to reported studies, the partial replacement of natural aggregates or cement with coal gangue can reduce CO2 emissions by approximately tens to several hundreds of kilograms per ton of coal gangue utilized, depending on the substitution level and activation strategy, highlighting its considerable potential for carbon reduction in the construction sector. Nevertheless, challenges related to energy-intensive activation processes and variability in raw gangue composition remain. These limitations indicate the need for future research focusing on low-carbon activation technologies, standardized classification of coal gangue resources, and long-term performance validation under realistic service environments. Based on the synthesized literature, this review discusses hierarchical utilization concepts and low-carbon activation approaches as promising directions for promoting the sustainable transformation of coal gangue from an environmental liability into a carbon-reduction asset in the construction industry. Following the drinking water crisis induced by harmful algal blooms in Lake Taihu in 2007, industrial restructuring and systematic pollution treatment projects were synchronously conducted to control pollutions in Lake Taihu basin. This paper conducts a systematic review of integrated pollution governance in the Lake Taihu Basin to conduct an exploration of sustainability in developing areas. Critical assessment of the conceptual frameworks and implementation strategies from the aspects of governance concept, technology application and environmental benefits have been made through multi-year water quality monitoring. The results showed that the total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorous (TP) loads entering the lake decreased by 45.6% and 36.6% in 2008–2023, and the water quality of Lake Tiahu and all 15 major inflow rivers met or exceeded Grade III standards in 2024, according to the National Standard for Surface Water Quality. The lake ecosystem has showed signs of restoration via a decline in the extent and intensity of toxic cyanobacterial bloom. At same time, the local economics have been developed without halting due to the pollution governance, which demonstrates a feasible pathway for both pollution management and economic development. This synergistic governance with both soft and hard measures implemented in Lake Taihu basin has reference significance for other developing countries toward sustainability around the world. The reuse of abandoned mines is not a pure ecological project but a complex social public project. While it is unsustainable to reuse abandoned mines without ecological restoration, such restoration without comprehensive resource utilization will cause a serious waste of resources. Therefore, to reduce the contradiction between ecological restoration and resource utilization in the process of reusing abandoned mines, there is an urgent need to research the classification, grading development, and utilization evaluation index system of abandoned mine resources. Based on the concept of “energy, resource and functionalization” three-dimensional coordinated development and utilization, this paper analyzes the value connotation of abandoned mine reuse and constructs an evaluation index system for the reuse value of abandoned mine resources, including resource conditions, ecological conditions, and development conditions. Secondly, according to the priority needs of abandoned mine reuse, the minimum factor method is used to design a development sequence that can take into account the reuse of abandoned mines and the coordinated development of the ecological environment and the region. On this basis, the value of abandoned mine reuse is divided into four grades and three development stages. Taking the Jingxi Mining Area as an example, corresponding development and utilization suggestions are proposed, and the guiding value of the evaluation index system in assessing resource potential and optimizing of development paths is verified. The research results can provide scientific decision support for planning the development and utilization of abandoned mine resources. They also have practical significance for constructing green development technology standards and promoting ecological restoration and industrial transformation and upgrading in mining areas. A four-step systemic methodology (which is designated as SAID) is proposed to investigate the future intrinsically safe chemical industrial park (FISCP). First, we collected 150 severe chemical incidents that occurred in China from 2010 to 2020 and analyzed their causes, provincial distribution of accidents and fatalities, accident scenario characteristics, and types of hazardous chemicals involved so as to identify potential safety hazards inherent in China’s chemical industry. Second, we scrutinize the interplay between the elements of chemical process safety and exemplary severe accidents. Then, taking the Taixing Economic and Technological Development Zone and 150 severe chemical incidents as a case study, we systematically investigated the existing problems in current chemical industrial parks. According to analyses related to severe chemical accidents and industrial park field investigations, the concept of the FISCP is proposed. This concept was subjected to in-depth analysis, including the identification of core characteristics and the addressing of critical issues related to the proposed FISCP. Finally, a multi-dimensional analysis is conducted in consideration of practical conditions, culminating in the formulation of specific recommendations. Furthermore, this research provides a foundational dataset and information repository, which may serve as a reference for subsequent studies on chemical industry safety and sustainability, as well as for the prevention of major chemical incidents in other regions. Silicon (Si), the cornerstone semiconductor in the micro-electronics industry, can provide a cost-efficient platform with mature technologies for photodetection in visible and near-infrared regions. However, its intrinsic properties, such as a narrow bandgap and the shallow penetration depth of ultraviolet (UV) light into its surface with surface trap states, remain challenges, rendering it unsuitable for effective UV light detection. Various techniques have been reported to circumvent these surface defect-induced difficulties. In addition, wide-bandgap semiconductors that favor UV light absorption in a solar-blind way have been combined with Si for UV light detection in order to retain the device’s compatibility with Si-CMOS processes, though it still faces challenges that need to be overcome. This review starts with concepts of basic parameters of photodetectors and categorizes UV photodetectors according to their detection mechanisms. We also present a review of wide-bandgap semiconductor-based UV light detectors and those based on Si, with a discussion of surface defect minimization. In addition, we review the hybrid structure of the two kinds, i.e., wide-bandgap semiconductors and Si, and discuss their properties that produce synergistic effects. Lastly, we provide conclusions and outlooks for the possible development of next-generation UV light detectors based on Si. Full article

This paper examines the transformative role of the Digital Twin-Computer Vision combination (DT-CV combo) in industrial operations, focusing on its applications, challenges, and future directions. It aims to synthesize the existing literature and explore the practical use cases in operations management (OM). A comprehensive systematic literature review is conducted using PRISMA guidelines to analyze the DT-CV combo across the classification of industrial OM. However, given the breadth and importance of manufacturing and the OM field, the study excludes the literature on the DT-CV combo applied to other domains such as healthcare, smart buildings and cities, and transportation. We found that the DT-CV combo in OM is a relatively young but growing field of research. To date, only 29 articles have examined DT-CV combo solutions from various OM perspectives. Case studies are rare, with most studies relying on experimentation and laboratory testing to investigate DT-CV applications in the OM context. According to the cases and methods reviewed in the literature, the DT-CV combo has applications in different OM areas such as design, prototyping, simulation, real-time production monitoring, defect detection, process optimization, hazard detection and mitigation, safety training, emergency response simulation, optimal resource allocation, condition monitoring, inventory management, and scheduling maintenance. We also identified several benefits of DT-CV combo solutions in OM, including reducing human error, ensuring compliance with quality standards, lowering maintenance costs, mitigating production downtime, eliminating operational bottlenecks, and decreasing workplace accidents, while simultaneously improving the effectiveness of training. In this paper, we classify current applications of the DT-CV combo in OM, highlight gaps in the existing literature, and propose research questions to guide future studies in this domain. By considering the rapid phase of AI technology development and combining it with the current state of the art applications of the DT-CV combo in OM, we suggest novel concepts and future directions. The digital twin-vision language model (DT-VLM) combo as a future direction, emphasizing its potential to bridge physical–digital interfaces in industrial workflows, is one of the future development directions. The article presents a comprehensive review of key issues and challenges related to enhancing the durability of hot forging tools. It discusses modern strategies aimed at increasing tool life, including modifications to tool materials, heat treatment, surface engineering, tool and die design, die geometry, tribological conditions, and lubrication. The review is based on extensive literature data, including recent publications and the authors’ own research, which has been implemented under industrial conditions at the modern forging facility in Forge Plant “Glinik” (Poland). The study introduces original design and technological solutions, such as an innovative concept for manufacturing forging dies from alloy structural steels with welded impressions, replacing traditional hot-work tool steel dies. It also proposes a zonal hardfacing approach, which involves applying welds with different chemical compositions to specific surface zones of the die impressions, selected according to the dominant wear mechanisms in each zone. General guidelines for selecting hardfacing material compositions are also provided. Additionally, the article presents technological processes for die production and regeneration. The importance and application of computer simulations of forging processes are emphasized, particularly in predicting wear mechanisms and intensity, as well as in optimizing tool and forging geometry. This study presents a systematic literature review on the mathematical modeling of resilient and viable supply chains, grounded in the PRISMA methodology and applied to a curated corpus of 235 peer-reviewed scientific articles published between 2011 and 2025. The search strategy was implemented across four major academic databases (Scopus and Web of Science) using Boolean operators to capture intersections among the core concepts of supply chains, resilience, viability, and advanced optimization techniques. The screening process involved a double manual assessment of titles, abstracts, and full texts, based on inclusion criteria centered on the presence of formal mathematical models, computational approaches, and thematic relevance. As a result of the selection process, six thematic categories were identified, clustering the literature according to their analytical objectives and methodological approaches: viability-oriented modeling, resilient supply chain optimization, agile and digitally enabled supply chains, logistics optimization and network configuration, uncertainty modeling, and immune system-inspired approaches. These categories were validated through a bibliometric analysis and a thematic map that visually represents the density and centrality of core research topics. Descriptive analysis revealed a significant increase in scientific output starting in 2020, driven by post-pandemic concerns and the accelerated digitalization of logistics operations. At the methodological level, a high degree of diversity in modeling techniques was observed, with an emphasis on mixed-integer linear programming (MILP), robust optimization, multi-objective modeling, and the increasing use of bio-inspired algorithms, artificial intelligence, and simulation frameworks. The results confirm a paradigm shift toward integrative frameworks that combine robustness, adaptability, and Industry 4.0 technologies, as well as a growing interest in biological metaphors applied to resilient system design. Finally, the review identifies research gaps related to the formal integration of viability under disruptive scenarios, the operationalization of immune-inspired models in logistics environments, and the need for hybrid approaches that jointly address resilience, agility, and sustainability. In the field of intralogistics, new systems are continuously being studied to increase flexibility and adaptability while striving to maintain high handling capabilities and performance. Among these new systems, this article focuses on a novel under-actuated intelligent surface capable of performing various handling tasks with a simplified design and without employing motors. The technology behind the device involves idle rotors, i.e., without motor-driven spinning, whose axis of rotation can be controlled in a few discrete positions. The system’s operation and digital model have already been tested and validated; however, a control system that makes the surface “smart” has not yet been developed. In this context, the following work analyzes control methodologies for the concept. Specifically, in a first phase, a threshold-based method is introduced and tested on a prototype of the surface for sorting and orientation operations. This basic technique involves actuating the surface modules according to pre-assigned rules once a chosen threshold condition is reached. In a second phase, instead, a decentralizd PID control is described and simulated based on real and potential industrial applications. Unlike the first method, in this case, it is the control law that defines the actuation and, through the dynamic description of the device, determines the best combination to achieve the goal. Additionally, the article illustrates how the difficulties introduced by the numerous nonlinearities, due to the under-actuation and the simplifications of the physical system, were overcome. For both control methods, promising results were obtained in terms of handling capability and errors in achieving the desired movement. Full article
