In the practical physical structure of the electromagnetic inerter–spring–damper (EM–ISD) suspension, parasitic damping inevitably coexists with the mechanical inerter effect. To investigate the intrinsic influence of this parasitic effect on the suspension system’s performance, this study first establishes a quarter-vehicle dynamic model that incorporates parasitic damping, based on the actual configuration of the EM–ISD suspension. Subsequently, the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is employed to optimize the key suspension parameters, with the objective of enhancing its comprehensive performance. The optimized parameters are then utilized to systematically analyze the dynamic characteristics of the suspension under the influence of parasitic damping. The results indicate that, compared to an ideal model that neglects parasitic damping, an increase in the parasitic damping coefficient leads to a deterioration in the root mean square (RMS) value of body acceleration, while concurrently reducing the RMS values of the suspension working space and dynamic tire load. However, by incorporating parasitic damping into the design considerations during the optimization phase, its adverse impact on ride comfort can be effectively mitigated. Compared with a traditional passive suspension, the optimized EM–ISD suspension, which accounts for parasitic damping, demonstrates superior performance. Specifically, the RMS values of body acceleration and suspension working space are significantly reduced by 11.1% and 17.6%, respectively, thereby effectively improving the vehicle’s ride comfort and handling stability. To address the adverse effects of Tuned Inertia Dampers (TIDs) on track slab vibrations while controlling high-frequency rail vibrations, a hybrid Finite Element-Statistical Energy Analysis (FE-SEA) method is developed for modeling the vehicle-track-bridge coupled system. Short-wavelength track irregularities are introduced as high-frequency excitation, and the accuracy and efficiency of this method are validated by comparison with the traditional finite element method (FEM). A vibration control model for track-bridge structures incorporating TIDs is designed, and the effects of the TID’s inertance, stiffness, and damping coefficients on the vertical acceleration responses of the rail and track slab are investigated in detail. The study reveals that although TIDs effectively reduce rail vibrations, they may induce adverse effects on track slab vibrations. Using the vibration acceleration amplitudes of both the rail and track slab as dual control objectives, a multi-objective optimization model is established, and the TID’s optimal parameters are determined using a multi-objective genetic algorithm. The results show that the optimized TID parameters reduce rail acceleration amplitudes by 16.43% and improve the control efficiency by 12.45%, while also addressing the negative effects on track slab vibration. The track slab’s vibration acceleration is reduced by 5.47%, and the vertical displacement and acceleration of the vehicle body are reduced by 14.22% and 47.5%, respectively, thereby enhancing passenger comfort. This study provides new insights and theoretical guidance for vibration control analysis in vehicle-track-bridge coupled systems. Full article

A healthy vasculature with well-regulated perfusion and pulsatility is essential for the brain. One vascular structure that has received little attention is the carotid siphon. The proximal portion of the siphon is stiff due to the narrow location in the skull base, whilst the distal portion is highly flexible. This flexible part in combination with the specific curves lead to lower pulsatility at the cost of energy deposition in the arterial wall. This deposited energy contributes to damage and calcification. Severe siphon calcification stiffens the distal part of the siphon, leading to less damping of the pulsatility. Increased blood flow pulsatility is a possible cause of stroke and cognitive disorders. In this review, based on comprehensive multimodality imaging, we first describe the anatomy and physiology of the carotid siphon. Subsequently, we review the in vivo imaging data, which indeed suggest that the siphon attenuates pulsatility. Finally, the data as available in the literature are shown to provide convincing evidence that severe siphon calcifications and the calcification pattern are linked to incident stroke and dementia. Interventional studies are required to test whether this association is causal and how an assessment of pulsatility and the siphon calcification pattern can improve personalized medicine, working to prevent and treat brain disease. Variations in damper configuration strategies have a direct impact on the seismic damage patterns of long-span deck-type concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) arch bridges. This study developed an analysis and evaluation framework to identify the damage category, state, and progression sequence of structural components. The framework aims to investigate the influence of viscous dampers on the seismic response and damage patterns of long-span deck-type CFST arch bridges under near-fault pulse-like ground motions. The effects of different viscous damper configuration strategies and design parameters on seismic responses of long-span deck-type CFST arch bridges were systematically investigated, and the preferred configuration and parameter set were identified. The influence of preferred viscous damper configurations on seismic damage patterns of long-span deck-type CFST arch bridges was systematically analyzed through the established analysis and evaluation frameworks. The results indicate that a relatively optimal reduction in bridge response can be achieved when viscous dampers are simultaneously installed at both the abutments and the approach piers. Minimum seismic responses were attained at a damping exponent α = 0.2 and damping coefficient C = 6000 kN/(m/s), demonstrating stability in mitigating vibration effects on arch rings and bearings. In the absence of damper implementation, the lower chord arch foot section is most likely to experience in-plane bending failure. The piers, influenced by the coupling effect between the spandrel construction and the main arch ring, are more susceptible to damage as their height decreases. Additionally, the end bearings are more prone to failure compared to the central-span bearings. Implementation of the preferred damper configuration strategy maintains essentially consistent sequences in seismic-induced damage patterns of the bridge, but the peak ground motion intensity causing damage to the main arch and spandrel structure is significantly increased. This strategy enhances the damage-initiation peak ground acceleration (PGA) for critical sections of the main arch, while concurrently reducing transverse and longitudinal bending moments in pier column sections. The proposed integrated analysis and evaluation framework has been validated for its applicability in capturing the seismic damage patterns of long-span deck-type CFST arch bridges. Full article

Research on reliability control for enhancing power systems under random loads holds significant and undeniable importance in maintaining system stability, performance, and safety. The primary challenge lies in determining the reliability index while optimizing system parameters. To effectively address this challenge, we developed a novel intelligent algorithm and conducted an optimal reliability assessment for a Negative Stiffness Device (NSD) seismic isolation structure incorporating fractional-order damping. This algorithm combines the Gaussian Radial Basis Function Neural Network (GRBFNN) with the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. It takes the reliability function with unknown parameters as the objective function, while using the Backward Kolmogorov (BK) equation, which governs the reliability function and is accompanied by boundary and initial conditions, as the constraint condition. During the operation of this algorithm, the neural network is employed to solve the BK equation, thereby deriving the fitness function in each iteration of the PSO algorithm. Then the PSO algorithm is utilized to obtain the optimal parameters. The unique advantage of this algorithm is its ability to simultaneously achieve the optimization of implicit objectives and the solution of time-dependent BK equations.To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, this study compared it with the algorithm combines the GRBFNN with Genetic Algorithm (GA-GRBFNN)across multiple dimensions, including performance and operational efficiency. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm has been validated through numerical comparisons and Monte Carlo simulations. The control strategy presented in this paper provides a solid theoretical foundation for improving the reliability performance of mechanical engineering systems and demonstrates significant potential for practical applications. In order to address vibration and noise challenges in modern industry while satisfying the lightweighting requirements for aerospace and transportation applications, the development of polymer elastomers integrating both lightweight and high-damping properties holds substantial significance. This study developed polyurethane (PU) with optimized damping and mechanical properties at room temperature through monomer composition optimization. Hollow glass microspheres (HGMs) were introduced into the PU matrix to increase stiffness and reduce density, though this resulted in decreased tensile strength (Rm) and loss factor (tanδ). To further improve mechanical and damping properties, we applied a carbon coating to the surface of the HGMs to optimize the interface between the HGMs and the PU matrix, and systematically investigated the energy dissipation and load-bearing behavior of PU composites. The effect of enhanced interface damping of HGM@C/PU resulted in broadening of the effective damping temperature range (tanδ ≥ 0.3) and higher maximum loss factor (tanδmax) compared to HGM/PU at equivalent filler loading. The tensile and dynamic properties significantly improved due to optimized interfacial adhesion. In PU composites reinforced with 10 wt% HGM and HGM@C, a 46.8% improvement in Rm and 11.0% improvement in tanδmax occurred after carbon coating. According to acoustic testing, average transmission loss of HGM/PU and HGM@C/PU with the same filler content showed a difference of 0.3–0.5 dB in 500–6300 Hz, confirming that the hollow structure of the HGMs was preserved during carbon coating. The lateral vibration of propulsion shafting is a critical factor affecting the acoustic stealth performance of underwater vehicles. As the main vibration isolation component in transmitting vibrational energy, the damping efficiency of the propulsion shafting support system (PSSS) holds particular significance. This study investigates the dynamic characteristics of the PSSS with the integral squeeze film damper (ISFD). A dynamic model of ISFD–PSSS is developed to systematically analyze the effects of shaft speed and external load on its dynamic behavior. Three test bearings (conventional, 1S, and 3S structure) are designed and manufactured to study the influence of damping structure layout scheme, damping fluid viscosity, unbalanced load, and shaft speed on the vibration reduction ability of ISFD–PSSS through axis orbit and vibration velocity. The results show that the damping effects of ISFD–PSSS are observed across all test conditions, presenting distinct nonlinear patterns. Suppression effectiveness is more pronounced in the vertical direction compared to the horizontal direction. The 3S structure bearing has better vibration reduction and structural stability than other schemes. The research results provide a reference for the vibration control method of rotating machinery. The aim of this paper is the investigation of changes in modal parameters of composite pressure vessel structures with different prestress states realized by varying fiber tension. Two series of vessels was manufactured and examined with different wound tensions, the first—3 N and second—80 N, respectively. Other technological factors, such as the type and weight of carbon fiber used, as well as liner type, were kept constant. The vessels were examined with internal pressure equal to atmospheric and without pressure fittings. The modal tests were performed on storage tanks suspended on an elastic cord in the horizontal orientation to prevent the structure from being disturbed by vibrations. The examinations were focused only on the cylindrical part of the vessels. Based on modal analysis, parameters such as natural frequencies, dampings and modal shapes were determined. Research results indicate clear changes in natural frequencies and damping coefficients between the two investigated prestress states. It is interesting that natural frequencies for bending modes are higher in the case of structures with high fiber tension, while in the case of other vibration forms, the natural frequencies have smaller values in comparison with the first series. The current study examines the influence of a varying gravity field and its interaction with density stratification. This represents a novel area in baroclinic flow analysis. The classical vortex and internal wave structures in stratified flows are shown to be significantly modified when gravity varies with height. Vortices may shift, stretch, or weaken depending on the direction and strength of gravity variation, and internal waves develop asymmetries or damping that are not present under constant gravity. We examine the influence of gravity variation on the flow of both homogeneous and density-stratified fluids in a channel with topography consisting of a Gaussian obstacle lying at the bottom of the channel. The flow is without inertia, induced by the translation of the top plate. Both the density and gravity are assumed to vary linearly with height, with the minimum density at the moving top plate. The narrow-gap approach is used to generate the flow field in terms of the pressure gradient along the top plate, which, in turn, is obtained in terms of the bottom topography and the three parameters of the problem, namely, the Froude number and the density and gravity gradients. The resulting stream function is a fifth-order polynomial in the vertical coordinate. In the absence of stratification, the flow is smooth, affected rather slightly by the variable topography, with an essentially linear drop in the pressure induced by the contraction. For a weak stratified fluid, the streamlines become distorted in the form of standing gravity waves. For a stronger stratification, separation occurs, and a pair of vortices generally appears on the two sides of the obstacle, the size of which depends strongly on the flow parameters. The influence of gravity stratification is closely coupled to that of density. We examine conditions where the coupling impacts the pressure and the velocity fields, particularly the onset of gravity waves and vortex flow. Only a mild density gradient is needed for flow separation to occur. The influence of the amplitude and width of the obstacle is also investigated. Full article

This study aims to develop an integrated wireless monitoring system named MANTiS-32, which leverages an open-source platform to enable autonomous modular operation, high-speed large-volume data transmission via Wi-Fi, and the integration of multiple complex sensors. The MANTiS-32 system is composed of ESP32-based MANTiS-32 hubs connected to eight MPU-6050 sensors each via RS485. Four MANTiS-32 hubs transmit data to a main PC through an access point (AP), making the system suitable for real-time monitoring of modal information necessary for structural performance evaluation. The fundamental performance of the developed MANTiS-32 system was validated to demonstrate its effectiveness. The evaluation included assessments of acceleration and frequency response measurement performance, wireless communication capabilities, and real-time data acquisition between the MANTiS-32 hub and the eight connected MPU-6050 sensors. To assess the feasibility of using MANTiS-32 for performance monitoring, a flexible model cable-stayed bridge, representing a mid- to long-span bridge, was designed. The system’s ability to perform real-time monitoring of the dynamic characteristics of the bridge model was confirmed. A total of 26 MPU-6050 sensors were distributed across four MANTiS-32 hubs, and real-time data acquisition was successfully achieved through an AP (ipTIME A3004T) without any bottleneck or synchronization issues between the hubs. Vibration data collected from the model bridge were analyzed in real time to extract dynamic characteristics, such as natural frequencies, mode shapes, and damping ratios. The extracted dynamic characteristics showed a measurement error of less than approximately 1.6%, validating the high-precision performance of the MANTiS-32 wireless monitoring system for real-time structural performance evaluation. On 22 May 2012, a magnitude Mw 5.6 earthquake struck the Pernik region of western Bulgaria, causing structural damage in nearby cities, including Sofia. This study assesses the seismic response of a six-story reinforced concrete building in central Sofia, utilizing real accelerogram data recorded at the basement (SGL1) and sixth floor (SGL2) levels during the earthquake. Using the Kanai–Yoshizawa (KY) model, the study estimates inter-story motion and assesses amplification effects across the structure. Analysis of peak ground acceleration (PGA), velocity (PGV), displacement (PGD), and spectral ratios reveals significant dynamic amplification of peak ground acceleration and displacement on the sixth floor, indicating flexible and dynamic behavior, as well as potential resonance effects. The analysis combines three spectral techniques—Horizontal-to-Vertical Spectral Ratio (H/V), Floor Spectral Ratio (FSR), and the Random Decrement Method (RDM)—to determine the building’s dynamic characteristics, including natural frequency and damping ratio. The results indicate a dominant vibration frequency of approximately 2.2 Hz and damping ratios ranging from 3.6% to 6.5%, which is consistent with the typical damping ratios of mid-rise concrete buildings. The findings underscore the significance of soil–structure interaction (SSI), particularly in sedimentary basins like the Sofia Graben, where localized geological effects influence seismic amplification. By integrating accelerometric data with advanced spectral techniques, this research can enhance ongoing site-specific monitoring and seismic design practices, contributing to the refinement of earthquake engineering methodologies for mitigating seismic risk in earthquake-prone urban areas. Control valves in nuclear systems operate under high-pressure differentials generating intense transient fluid forces that induce destructive structural vibrations, risking resonance and the valve stem fracture. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was employed to characterize the internal flow dynamics of the valve, supported by experiment validation of the fluid model. To account for nonlinear structural effects such as contact and damping, a coupled fluid–structure interaction approach incorporating nonlinear perturbation analysis was applied to evaluate the dynamic response of the valve core assembly under fluid excitation. The results indicate that flow separation, re-circulation, and vortex shedding within the throttling region are primary contributors to structural vibrations. A comparative analysis of stability coefficients, modal damping ratios, and logarithmic decrements under different valve openings revealed that the valve core assembly remains relatively stable overall. However, critical stability risks were identified in the lower-order modal frequency range at 50% and 70% openings. Notably, at a 70% opening, the first-order modal frequency of the valve core assembly closely aligns with the frequency of fluid excitation, indicating a potential for critical resonance. This research provides important insights for evaluating and enhancing the vibration stability and operational safety of control valves under complex flow conditions. Full article

This research introduces an innovative passive vibration control methodology employing acoustic black hole (ABH) structures to mitigate vibration transmission in electric automotive steering machines—a prevalent issue adversely affecting driving comfort and vehicle safety. Leveraging the inherent bending wave manipulation properties of ABH configurations, we conceive an integrated vibration suppression framework synergizing advanced computational modeling with intelligent optimization algorithms. A high-fidelity finite element (FEM) model integrating ABH-attached steering machine system was developed and subjected to experimental validation via rigorous modal testing. To address computational challenges in design optimization, a hybrid modeling strategy integrating parametric design (using Latin Hypercube Sampling, LHS) with Kriging surrogate modeling is proposed. Systematic parameterization of ABH geometry and damping layer dimensions generated 40 training datasets and 12 validation datasets. Surrogate model verification confirms the model’s precise mapping of vibration characteristics across the design space. Subsequent multi-objective genetic algorithm optimization targeting RMS velocity suppression achieved substantial vibration attenuation (29.2%) compared to baseline parameters. The developed methodology provides automotive researchers and engineers with an efficient suitable design tool for vibration-sensitive automotive component design. Full article

Seismic responses of Nuclear Island (NI) structures have great significance in the foundation adaptability analysis and the seismic design of equipment. However, with the increasing complexity of nuclear power site conditions, establishing a reasonable and effective soil–pile–structure dynamic interaction model has become the key technical problem that needs to be solved. In this study, a pseudo three-dimensional soil–pile–structure dynamic interaction model considering soil nonlinearity and heterogeneity is developed for seismic response analysis of NI structures. Specifically, the nonlinearity of the near-field soil is described via the equivalent linear method, the radiation damping effect of half space is simulated through viscous boundary, and the displacement/stress conditions at lateral boundaries of the heterogeneous site are derived from free-field response analysis. Meanwhile, an equivalent stiffness–mass principle is established to simplify NI superstructures, while pile group effects are incorporated via a node-coupling scheme within the finite-element framework. Two validation examples are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed model. Finally, seismic response analysis of two typical NI structure of reactor types (CPR1000 and AP1000) based on the actual complex site conditions in China is also presented to study the effect of radiation damping, soil conditions, and pile foundation. Key findings demonstrate the necessity of integrating SSI effects and nonlinear characteristics of non-rock foundations. While the rock-socketed pile exhibits superior performance compared to the CFG pile alternative; this advantage is offset by higher costs and construction complexity. The research findings can serve as a valuable reference for the foundation adaptability analysis and optimizing the design of equipment under the similar complex condition of the soil site. Concrete structures increasingly face dynamic loading conditions, such as seismic events, vehicular traffic, and environmental vibrations, necessitating enhanced energy dissipation capabilities. The damping ratio, a critical parameter quantifying a material’s ability to dissipate vibrational energy, is typically low in conventional concrete, prompting extensive research into strategies for improvement. This review comprehensively explores the impact of advanced concrete types—such as Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECCs), Ultra-High-Performance Concrete (UHPC), High-Performance Concrete (HPC), and polymer concrete—on enhancing the damping behavior. Additionally, key mix design innovations, including fiber reinforcement, rubber powder incorporation, and aggregate modification, are evaluated for their roles in increasing energy dissipation. External factors, particularly curing conditions, are also discussed for their influence on the damping performance. The findings consolidate experimental and theoretical insights into how material composition, mix design, and external treatments interact to optimize dynamic resilience. To guide future research, this paper identifies critical gaps including the need for multi-scale numerical simulation frameworks, standardized damping test protocols, and long-term performance evaluation under realistic service conditions. Advancing work in material innovation, optimized mix design, and controlled curing environments will be essential for developing next-generation concretes with superior vibration control, durability, and sustainability. These insights provide a strategic foundation for applications in seismic-prone and vibration-sensitive infrastructure. Full article
