The incorporation of waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) as a modifier for asphalt presents a promising approach to addressing the environmental pollution associated with waste plastics while simultaneously extending the service life of road surfaces. This study investigates the fundamental physical properties and rheological properties of asphalt modified with waste PET at both high and low temperatures. Utilizing the theory of fractional derivatives, performance evaluation indicators, such as the deformation factor and viscoelasticity factor, have been developed for the assessment of waste PET-modified asphalt. The underlying mechanism of this modification was examined through scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results indicate that the addition of waste PET enhances the high-temperature stability of the base asphalt but reduces its resistance to cracking at low temperatures. The fractional derivative model effectively describes the dynamic shear rheological properties of waste PET-modified asphalt, achieving a maximum correlation coefficient of 0.99991. Considering the performance of modified asphalt at both high and low temperatures, the optimal concentration of waste PET was determined to be 6%. At this concentration, the minimum creep stiffness of the PET-modified asphalt was approximately 155 MPa at −6 °C. Additionally, the rutting factor of the waste PET-modified asphalt achieved a maximum value of 527.12 KPa at 52 °C. The interaction between waste PET and base asphalt was primarily physical, with mutual adsorption leading to the formation of a spatial network structure that enhanced the deformation resistance of the asphalt. This study provides a theoretical foundation and technical support for the engineering application of waste PET as a modifier in asphalt. Full article

This study proposes a coupled constitutive model that captures the anisotropic failure characteristics and damage evolution of nickel-based single-crystal (SX) superalloys under various temperature conditions. The model accounts for both creep rate and material damage evolution, enabling accurate prediction of the typical three-stage creep curves, macroscopic fracture morphologies, and microstructural features under uniaxial tensile creep for specimens with different crystallographic orientations. Creep behavior of SX superalloys was simulated under multiple orientations and various temperature-stress conditions using the proposed model. The resulting creep curves aligned well with experimental observations, thereby validating the model’s feasibility and accuracy. Furthermore, a finite element model of cylindrical specimens was established, and simulations of the macroscopic fracture morphology were performed using a user-defined material subroutine. By integrating the rafting theory governed by interfacial energy density, the model successfully predicts the rafting morphology of the microstructure at the fracture surface for different crystallographic orientations. The proposed model maintains low programming complexity and computational cost while effectively predicting the creep life and deformation behavior of anisotropic materials. The model accurately captures the three-stage creep deformation behavior of SX specimens and provides reliable predictions of stress fields and microstructural changes at critical cross-sections. The model demonstrates high accuracy in life prediction, with all predicted results falling within a ±1.5× error band and an average error of 14.6%. Full article

Stress fields imparted with an ultrafast laser can correct low spatial frequency surface figure error of mirrors through ultrafast laser stress figuring (ULSF): the formation of nanograting structures within the bulk substrate generates localized stress, creating bending moments that equilibrize via wafer deformation. For ULSF to be used as an optical figuring process, the ultrafast laser generated stress must be effectively permanent or risk unwanted figure drift. Two isochronal annealing experiments were performed to measure ultrafast laser-generated stress stability in fused silica and Corning ultra-low expansion (ULE) wafers. The first experiment tracked changes to induced astigmatism up to 1000 °C on 25.4 mm-diameter wafers. Only small changes were measured after each thermal cycle up to 500 °C for both materials, but significant changes were observed at higher temperatures. The second experiment tracked stress changes in fused silica and ULE up to 500 °C but with 4 to 16× higher signal-to-noise ratio. Change in trefoil on 100 mm-diameter wafers was measured, and the induced stress in fused silica and ULE was found to be stable after thermal cycling up to 300 °C and 200 °C, respectively, with larger changes at higher temperatures. High-strength steel has high strength and low thermal conductivity, and its thin-walled parts are very susceptible to residual stress and deformation caused by cutting heat during the drilling process, which affects the machining accuracy and quality. High-strength steel thin-walled components are widely used in aerospace and other high-end sectors; however, systematic investigations into their temperature fields during drilling remain scarce, particularly regarding the evolution characteristics of the temperature field in thin-wall drilling and the quantitative relationship between drilling parameters and these temperature variations. This paper takes the thin-walled parts of AF1410 high-strength steel as the research object, designs a special fixture, and applies infrared thermography to measure the bottom surface temperature in the thin-walled drilling process in real time; this is carried out in order to study the characteristics of the temperature field during the thin-walled drilling process of high-strength steel, as well as the influence of the drilling dosage on the temperature field of the bottom surface. The experimental findings are as follows: in the process of thin-wall drilling of high-strength steel, the temperature field of the bottom surface of the workpiece shows an obvious temperature gradient distribution; before the formation of the drill cap, the highest temperature of the bottom surface of the workpiece is distributed in the central circular area corresponding to the extrusion of the transverse edge during the drilling process, and the highest temperature of the bottom surface can be approximated as the temperature of the extrusion friction zone between the top edge of the drill and the workpiece when the top edge of the drill bit drills to a position close to the bottom surface of the workpiece and increases with the increase in the drilling speed and the feed volume; during the process of drilling, the highest temperature of the bottom surface of the workpiece is approximated as the temperature of the top edge of the drill bit and the workpiece. The maximum temperature of the bottom surface of the workpiece in the drilling process increases nearly linearly with the drilling of the drill, and the slope of the maximum temperature increases nearly linearly with the increase in the drilling speed and feed, in which the influence of the feed on the slope of the maximum temperature increases is larger than that of the drilling speed. Actinidia arguta is a dioecious plant, and the selection of superior male germplasm is crucial for ensuring effective pollination of female cultivars, maximizing their economic traits, and achieving high-quality yields. This study evaluated 30 male germplasms for pollen quantity, germination capacity, storage characteristics, and ultrastructural features. Results revealed significant variation in pollen germination rates (1.56–96.57%) among germplasms, with ‘Lvwang’, ‘TL20083’, and ‘TG06023’ performing best (all >90% germination). The storage characteristics study demonstrated that −80 °C is the optimal temperature for long-term pollen storage in A. arguta. Significant variations were observed in storage tolerance among different germplasms. Among them, Lvwang exhibited the best performance, maintaining a germination rate of 97.40% after 12 months of storage at −80 °C with no significant difference from the initial value, followed by TT07063. Pollen morphology was closely correlated with fertility. High-fertility pollen grains typically exhibited standard prolate or ultra-prolate shapes, featuring a tri-lobed polar view and an elliptical equatorial view, with neat germination furrows and clean surfaces. In contrast, low-fertility pollen grains frequently appeared shrunken and deformed, with widened germination furrows and visible exudates. Based on these findings, the following recommendations are proposed: ① Prioritize the use of germplasms with pollen germination rates >80% as pollinizers; ② Establish a rapid screening system based on pollen morphological characteristics. This study provides important scientific basis for both male germplasm selection and efficient cultivation practices in A. arguta (kiwiberry). Full article

WS2 coating, as a solid lubricating material, plays a significant role in the lubrication of rotating components in spacecraft. During the launch process, however, spacecraft are exposed to high-temperature and humid atmospheric environments, which can lead to oxidative failure in the coating, thereby limiting its engineering applications. By doping with B elements, B/WS2 was successfully prepared as a composite coating. The results demonstrate that the fabricated coating exhibits excellent high-temperature tribological performance in atmospheric environments. The mechanism through which B doping improves the high-temperature friction and wear properties of the WS2 composite coating was revealed through high-temperature friction and wear tests. With the incorporation of B elements, the average friction coefficient of the coating was 0.071, and the wear rate was 7.63 × 10−7 mm3·N−1·m−1, with the wear mechanisms identified as abrasive wear and spalling. Due to high-temperature oxidation, thermal decomposition effects, and the formation of WB4 during sputtering, the wear resistance and anti-plastic deformation capability of the coating were further improved. Compared to room-temperature test conditions, the B/WS2 composite coating at different high temperatures exhibited superior friction coefficients and wear rates. Notably, at 150 °C, the average friction coefficient was as low as 0.015, and the wear forms were abrasive wear and adhesive wear. Full article

For meeting the growing demand for lightweight impact-resistant materials, this study designed and fabricated a carbon hollow microsphere (CHM)-reinforced polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite and systematically investigated the influence of CHM packing structure on its energy absorption performance. Through optimizing the controllable preparation processes of the CHMs, CHMs with low breaking rates and novel structural stability were successfully prepared. A vacuum-assisted mixing–casting method was employed to synthesize the CHM/PDMS composites with varying CHM contents (0~10 wt.%). The results demonstrated that the incorporation of CHMs significantly enhanced the compressive strength, compressive modulus, and energy absorption efficiency of the PDMS matrix. Under quasi-static loading, the composite with 4 wt.% CHM exhibited optimal comprehensive performance, achieving a 124.68% increase in compressive strength compared to pure PDMS. In dynamic impact tests, the compressive strength and energy absorption at a strain rate of 4500 s−1 increased by 1245.09% and 1218.32%, respectively. The improvement of mechanical properties can be mainly attributed to the introduction of CHMs with an appropriate percentage, which can form a dense stacking structure so that the interaction force between the CHMs and PDMS matrix can be improved through the dense stacking effect, and the external force can be effectively dissipated through interface interaction, in addition to the energy dissipated by the deformation of the matrix deformation and crush of the CHMs. Additionally, the introduction of CHMs elevated the onset thermal decomposition temperature of the materials, leading to an enhanced thermal stability of the CHM/PDMS composite compared to that of the pure PDMS. Overall, this study provides theoretical and experimental foundations for designing lightweight impact-resistant materials and demonstrates the potential of CHM/PDMS composites for multifunctional safety protection. To enhance the molten salt corrosion resistance of Ni200 alloy plasma arc welds, the welds were subjected to tensile deformation followed by heat treatment. The grain boundary character distribution (GBCD) was analyzed using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) in conjunction with orientation imaging microscopy (OIM). A constant-temperature corrosion test at 900 °C was conducted to evaluate the impact of GBCD on the corrosion resistance of the welds. Results demonstrated that after processing with 6% tensile deformation, and annealing at 950 °C for 30 min, the fraction of low-ΣCSL grain boundaries increased from 1.2% in the as-welded condition to 57.3%, and large grain clusters exhibiting Σ3n orientation relationships were formed. During the heat treatment, an increased number of recrystallization nucleation sites led to a reduction in average grain size from 323.35 μm to 171.38 μm. When exposed to a high-temperature environment of 75% Na2SO4-25% NaCl mixed molten salt, the corrosion behavior was characterized by intergranular attack, with oxidation and sulfidation reactions resulting in the formation of NiO and Ni3S2. The corrosion resistance of Grain boundary engineering (GBE)-treated samples was significantly superior to that of Non-GBE samples, with respective corrosion rates of 0.3397 mg/cm2·h and 0.8484 mg/cm2·h. These findings indicate that grain boundary engineering can effectively modulate the grain boundary character distribution in Ni200 alloy welds, thereby enhancing their resistance to molten salt corrosion. Asphalt pavement cracking is an important factor affecting its service life. Under certain conditions, the self-healing behavior of asphalt itself can repair pavement cracks. However, the self-healing ability of asphalt itself is limited. In order to strengthen the self-healing ability of asphalt, the microcapsule wrapped with a repair agent is pre-mixed into the asphalt mixture. When the crack occurs and spreads to the surface of the microcapsule, the microcapsule ruptures and the healing agent flows out to realize the self-healing of the crack. Current microcapsules are mostly prepared with healing agents and bio-oil as core materials, and their high-temperature resistance to rutting is poor. While the epoxy resin contains a three-membered cyclic ether, it can undergo ring-opening polymerization to bond and repair the asphalt matrix. In addition, research on microcapsules mainly focuses on the self-healing properties of microcapsule-modified asphalt. In fact, before adding microcapsules to asphalt to improve its self-healing performance, it is necessary to ensure that the asphalt has a good road performance. On this basis, the self-healing performance of asphalt is improved, thereby extending the service life of asphalt pavement. Therefore, two-component epoxy self-healing microcapsules (E-mic and G-mic) were first prepared in this paper. Then, a temperature scanning test, rheological test of bending beams, and linear amplitude scanning test were, respectively, conducted for the microcapsule/asphalt to evaluate its road performance, including the high-temperature performance, low-temperature crack resistance, and fatigue performance. Finally, the self-healing performance of microcapsules/asphalt was tested. The results showed that the self-developed epoxy self-healing microcapsules were well encapsulated and presented as spherical micron-sized particles. The average particle size of the E-mic was approximately 23.582 μm, while the average particle size of the G-mic was approximately 22.440 μm, exhibiting a good normal distribution. In addition, they can remain intact and unbroken under high-temperature conditions. The results of road performance tests indicated that the microcapsule/asphalt mixture exhibits an excellent high-temperature resistance to permanent deformation, low-temperature crack resistance, and fatigue resistance. The self-healing test demonstrated that the microcapsule/asphalt exhibited an excellent self-healing performance. When the microcapsule content was 4%, the self-healing rate reached its optimal level of 67.8%, which was 149.2% higher than that of the base asphalt. Full article

Relaxation behavior of water confined in reverse micelles under temperature-induced micelle clustering is undertaken using broadband dielectric spectroscopy in frequency range 1 Hz–20 GHz. All microemulsion systems with sufficiently noticeable micelle water pool (water/surfactant molar ratio W > 10) depict three relaxation processes, in low, high and microwave frequencies, anchoring with relaxation of shell (bound) water, orientation of surfactant anions at water-surfactant interface and relaxation of bulk water confined in reverse micelles. The analysis of dielectric relaxation processes in AOT-based w/o microemulsions under temperature induced clustering of reverse micelles were made according to structural information obtained in NMR and conductometry experiments. The “wait and switch” relaxation mechanism was applied for the explanation of results for water in the bound and bulk states under spatial limitation in reverse micelles. It was shown that surfactant layer predominantly influences the bound water. The properties of water close to AOT interface are determined by strong interactions between water and ionic AOT molecules, which perturb water H-bonding network. The decrease in micelle size causes a weakening of hydrogen bonds, deformation of its steric network and reduction in co-operative relaxation effects. Full article

In order to solve various problems in traditional roads and extend their service life, new road materials have become a research hotspot. Polyurethane prepolymers (PUPs) and ceramic fibers (CFs), as materials with unique properties, were chosen due to their synergistic effect: PUPs provide elasticity and gel-like behavior, while CFs contribute to structural stability and high-temperature resistance, making them ideal for enhancing asphalt performance. PUPs, a thermoplastic and elastic polyurethane gel material, not only enhance the flexibility and adhesion properties of asphalt but also significantly improve the structural stability of composite materials when synergistically combined with CF. Using response surface methodology, an optimized preparation scheme for PUP/CF composite-modified asphalt was investigated. Through aging tests, dynamic shear rate (DSR) testing, bending rate (BBR) testing, microstructure scanning (MSCR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and infrared spectroscopy (IR), the aging performance, rheological properties, permanent deformation resistance, microstructure, and modification mechanism of PUP/CF composite-modified asphalt were investigated. The results indicate that the optimal preparation scheme is a PUP content of 7.4%, a CF content of 2.1%, and a shear time of 40 min. The addition of the PUP and CF significantly enhances the asphalt’s aging resistance, and compared with single-CF-modified asphalt and base asphalt, the PUP/CF composite-modified asphalt exhibits superior high- and low-temperature rheological properties, demonstrating stronger strain recovery capability. The PUP forms a gel network structure in the material, effectively filling the gaps between CF and asphalt, enhancing interfacial bonding strength, and making the overall performance more stable. AFM microscopic morphology shows that PUP/CF composite-modified asphalt has more “honeycomb structures” than matrix asphalt and CF-modified asphalt, forming more structural asphalt and enhancing overall structural stability. This study indicates that the synergistic effect of PUP gel and CF significantly improves the macro and micro properties of asphalt. The PUP forms a three-dimensional elastic gel network in asphalt, improving adhesion and deformation resistance. Using response surface methodology, the optimal formulation (7.4% PUP, 2.1% CF) improves penetration (↓41.5%), softening point (↑6.7 °C), and ductility (↑9%), demonstrating the relevance of gel-based composites for asphalt modification. Polyimide (PI), owing to its high heat resistance and low density, is often employed as a substitute for metallic materials in high-temperature environments, such as aircraft engines, bearings, and gears. However, the relatively high friction coefficient of pure PI limits its application under harsh conditions. Therefore, this study synthesized a composite lubricant with binary fillers to improve this performance. This study employed the hydrothermal method to synthesize MoS2/MXene composite lubricating fillers and systematically investigated the high-temperature tribological properties of PI composites reinforced with these fillers. The results demonstrated that the optimal PI composite containing 5% MoS2/MXene exhibited a 14 °C increase in initial decomposition temperature compared to pure PI. Additionally, its thermal conductivity was enhanced by 36%, while the hardness (0.398 GPa) and elastic modulus (6.294 GPa) were elevated by 12.4% and 18.6%, respectively, relative to the pure PI. In terms of tribological behavior, all composite formulations displayed typical temperature-dependent friction characteristics. It is worth noting that MXene’s high hardness and thermal conductivity inhibited the occurrence of abrasive wear. At the same time, the substrate was strengthened, and thermal resistance was enhanced, thereby delaying the plastic deformation of the material at high temperatures. Full article

Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is an essential technique for continuously assessing structural conditions using integrated sensor systems during operation. SHM technologies have evolved to address the increasing demand for efficient maintenance strategies in advanced engineering fields, such as civil infrastructure, aerospace, and transportation. However, developing a miniaturized, cost-effective, and multi-sensor solution based on Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) remains a significant challenge, particularly for SHM applications in weight-sensitive aerospace structures. To address this, the present study introduces a novel WSN-based Multi-Sensor System (MSS) that integrates multiple sensing capabilities onto a 3 × 3 cm flexible Printed Circuit Board (PCB). The proposed system combines a Piezoelectric Transducer (PZT) for impact detection; a strain gauge for mechanical deformation monitoring; an accelerometer for capturing dynamic responses; and an environmental sensor measuring temperature, pressure, and humidity. This high level of functional integration, combined with real-time Data Acquisition (DAQ) and precise time synchronization via Bluetooth Low Energy (LE), distinguishes the proposed MSS from conventional SHM systems, which are typically constrained by bulky hardware, single sensing modalities, or dependence on wired communication. Experimental evaluations on composite panels and aluminum specimens demonstrate reliable high-fidelity recording of PZT signals, strain variations, and acceleration responses, matching the performance of commercial instruments. The proposed system offers a low-power, lightweight, and scalable platform, demonstrating strong potential for on-board SHM in aircraft applications. Full article

This research evaluates the rheological and mechanical properties of polymer- and nanomaterials-modified bitumen by incorporating nanosilica (NSA), nanoclay (NCY), and Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate (ASA) at 5% by weight of the bitumen. The samples were prepared at 165 °C for one hour to obtain homogeneous blends. All samples were subjected to short- and long-term aging to simulate the effects of different operating conditions. The research conducted a series of tests, including consistency, frequency sweep, and multiple creep stress and recovery (MSCR) using the dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and bending beam rheometer (BBR). The results showed that all modified bitumen outperformed the neat bitumen. The frequency sweep showed a higher complex modulus (G*) and lower phase angle (δ), indicating enhanced viscoelastic properties and, thus, higher resistance to permanent deformation. The BBR test revealed that the bitumen modified with NCY5% has a creep stiffness of 47.13 MPa, a 51.5% improvement compared to the neat bitumen, while the NSA5% has the highest m-value, a 28.5% enhancement compared with the neat bitumen. The MSCR showed that the modified blends have better recovery properties and, therefore, better resistance to permanent deformation under repeated loadings. The aging index demonstrated that the modified bitumen is less vulnerable to aging and maintains their good flexibility and resistance to permanent deformations. Finally, these results showed that adding 5% polymer and nanomaterials improved the bitumen’s’ performance before and after aging by reducing permanent deformation and enhancing crack resistance at low temperatures, thus extending the pavement service life and making them an effective alternative for improving pavement performance in various climatic conditions and under high traffic loads. The composition design of asphalt mixtures plays a pivotal role in determining pavement performance and durability. To improve skeleton stability, paving uniformity, and mechanical strength, this research proposes a three-dimensional optimization framework for asphalt mixture design, focusing on aggregate gradation and optimum asphalt content. A skeleton-dense and anti-segregation gradation optimization method was developed by integrating a previously established skeleton-dense model with a segregation tendency prediction approach. In parallel, a mechanically driven method for determining optimum asphalt content was proposed by introducing the maximum migration shear stress as a performance-based alternative to the conventional Marshall stability parameter. Research results show that asphalt mixtures designed and compacted with the optimized gradation exhibit significantly enhanced high-temperature stability, while maintaining satisfactory low-temperature cracking resistance and moisture susceptibility. Field validation was conducted through the construction of a trial pavement section using the optimized gradation under recommended mixing and compaction temperatures. The resulting pavement demonstrated excellent compaction, strong resistance to segregation, and a highly stable spatial structure. These findings confirm the effectiveness of the proposed methodology in enhancing the high-temperature deformation resistance and overall structural integrity of asphalt mixtures. Full article
