Laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) is a unique technology that enables manufacturing geometrically complex metal alloys, including Ti-6Al-4V parts. The microstructure of Ti-6Al-4V is determined by its localized thermal history, which is affected by not only the L-PBF process but also the geometry of the part. Understanding the microstructure at specific locations in complex geometries is of great importance in predicting the mechanical performance of Ti-6Al-4V parts. This work investigates the effects of geometric features on the local microstructure. Three geometries, namely, holes, overhangs, and penholders, were designed and used for this study. Three different laser powers, namely 150 W, 250 W, and 350 W, were set to print those geometries. The use of a lower laser power results in improved print quality. While the martensite phase dominates the bulk of the L-PBF Ti-6Al-4V parts, a fine α+β lamellar structure can form at down-skin regions of printed horizontal holes and overhangs. Moreover, the direction of the columnar prime β grain can shift due to directional heat dissipation. The local microstructural evolution after heat treatment is investigated as well. Full article

This study investigates the microstructural evolution and mechanical response of an additively manufactured (PBF-LB/M) AlSi10Mg alloy subjected to severe plastic deformation via two passes of twist channel angular pressing (TCAP). Processing was conducted using Route Bc, with the first pass at 150 °C and the second at 250 °C. For the first time, the evolution from the initial hierarchical AM structure to a refined state was characterized in high-fidelity detail using a novel EBSD detector. The two-pass process transformed the initial structure into a heterogeneous, bimodal microstructure existing in a non-equilibrium state, characterized by a high fraction of low-angle grain boundaries (63%) and significant internal lattice distortion. The mechanical properties were dictated by the processing temperature: a single pass at 150 °C induced work hardening, increasing the yield strength from 450 MPa to 482 MPa. Conversely, the second pass at an elevated temperature of 250 °C promoted significant dynamic recovery. This led to a decrease in yield strength to 422 MPa but concurrently resulted in a substantial increase in ultimate compressive strength to 731 MPa. Full article

This study introduces the Real-To-Fictional Ontology (RTFO), a structured framework designed to analyze the dynamic relationship between reality and fiction in literary works, with a focus on preparatory materials and their influence on narrative construction. While traditional Italian philology and genetic criticism have distinct theoretical and editorial approaches to avant-text, this ontology addresses their limitations by integrating fine-grained textual analysis with contextual biographical avant-text to enhance character interpretation. Modeled in OWL2, RTFO harmonizes established frameworks such as LRMoo and CIDOC-CRM, enabling systematic representation of narrative elements. The ontology is applied to the case study of Cesare Pavese’s La luna e i falò, with a particular focus on the biographical avant-text of Pinolo Scaglione, the real-life friend who inspired key aspects of the novel. The fragmented and unstable nature of avant-text is addressed through a factoid-based model, which captures character-related traits, states and events as interconnected entities. SWRL rules are employed to infer implicit connections, such as direct influences between real-life contexts and fictional constructs. Application of the ontology to case studies demonstrates its effectiveness in tracing the evolution of characters from preparatory drafts to final texts, revealing how biographical and contextual factors shape narrative choices. In this work, the microstructure and mechanical properties of the FeAlCrNiV complex concentrated alloy (CCA) were studied in the as-cast and annealed states. The material was annealed at 800 °C for 16 days to test microstructure stability and phase evolution. It was found that the microstructure does not differ in the two investigated states, and the results of differential scanning calorimetry and dilatometry showed that there is almost no difference in the thermal response between the as-cast and annealed states. Both investigated states exhibit eutectic structure with bcc solid solution and ordered phase with B2 symmetry. In a single grain, several regions with B2 laths in the bcc matrix were observed. Inside the B2 laths and in the bcc matrix, bcc spheres and B2 spheres were observed, respectively. All three features—laths, matrix and spheres—are fully crystallographically coherent. Nevertheless, in the adjacent region in the grain, the crystal structure of the matrix, laths and sphere changed to the other structure, i.e., the characteristics of the microstructure feature with B2 symmetry changed to bcc, and vice versa. Compression deformation tests were performed for various temperatures from room temperature to 800 °C. The results showed that the material exhibits exceptional yield stress values, especially at high temperatures (820 MPa/800 °C), and excellent plasticity (25%). Full article

Understanding the limitations of cold-formed aluminum alloys in practice applications is essential, particularly due to the risk of substructural changes and a reduction in strength when exposed to elevated temperatures. In this study, the thermal stability of the ultra-fine-grained (UFG) structure formed by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) at room temperature and the mechanical properties of the AlSi7MgCu0.5 alloy were investigated. Prior to ECAP, the plasticity of the as-cast alloy was enhanced by a heat treatment consisting of solution annealing, quenching, and artificial aging to achieve an overaged state. Four repetitive passes via ECAP route A resulted in the homogenization of eutectic Si particles within the α-solid solution, the formation of ultra-fine grains and/or subgrains with high dislocation density, and a significant improvement in alloy strength due to strain hardening. The main objective of this work was to assess the microstructural and mechanical stability of the alloy after post-ECAP annealing in the temperature range of 373–573 K. The UFG microstructure was found to be thermally stable up to 523 K, above which notable grain and/or subgrain coarsening occurred as a result of discontinuous recrystallization of the solid solution. Mechanical properties remained stable up to 423 K; above this temperature, a considerable decrease in strength and a simultaneous increase in ductility were observed. Synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction (XRD) was employed to analyze the phase composition and crystallographic characteristics, while transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to investigate substructural evolution. Mechanical properties were evaluated through tensile testing, impact toughness testing, and hardness measurements. Full article

This work expands the processing window of the laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) processing of WE43 magnesium alloy by evaluating laser powers and scanning speeds up to 400 W and 1200 mm/s, and their effect on densification, microstructure, and electrochemical performance. Relative density of 99.9% was achieved for 300 W and 800 mm/s, showing that the use of high laser power is not a limitation for the manufacturing of Mg alloys, as has been usually considered. Microstructural characterisation revealed refined grains and the presence of RE-rich intermetallic particles, while microhardness increased with height due to thermal gradients. Electrochemical testing in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution, a more aggressive media than those already used, indicated that the corrosion of samples with density values below 99% is conditioned by the porosity; however, above this value, in the WE43, the corrosion evolution is more related to the microstructure of the samples, according to electrochemical evaluation. This study demonstrates the viability of high-energy LPBF processing for WE43, offering optimised mechanical and corrosion properties for biomedical and structural applications. Full article

Aluminum matrix composites provide an ideal solution for lightweight brake disks, but conventional casting processes are prone to crack initiation due to inhomogeneous reinforcement dispersion, gas porosity, and inadequate toughness. To break the conventional trade-off between high wear resistance and low toughness of brake disks, this study fabricated a bimetallic structure of SiCp/Al–Fe–V–Si aluminum matrix composite and cast ZL101 alloy using friction stir lap welding (FSLW). Then, the microstructural evolution, mechanical properties, and tribological behavior of the FSLW joints were studied by XRD, SEM, TEM, tensile testing, and tribological tests. The results showed that the FSLW process homogenized the distribution of SiC particle reinforcements in the SiCp/Al–Fe–V–Si composites. The Al12(Fe,V)3Si heat-resistant phase was not decomposed or coarsened, and the mechanical properties were maintained. The FSLW process refined the grains of the ZL101 aluminum alloy through recrystallization and fragmented eutectic silicon, improving elongation to 22%. A metallurgical bond formed at the joint interface. Tensile fracture occurred within the ZL101 matrix, demonstrating that the interfacial bond strength exceeded the alloy’s load-bearing capacity. In addition, the composites exhibited significantly enhanced wear resistance after FSLW, with their wear rate reduced by approximately 40% compared to the as-received materials, which was attributed to the homogenized SiC particle distribution and the activation of an oxidative wear mechanism. Due to the frequent occurrence of coarse-grained structures in large hydrogenation tube sheets, their hydrogen resistance and corrosion resistance deteriorate, significantly shortening their service life. Therefore, microstructure evolution must be strictly controlled during the forging process. High-temperature compression tests were simulated using a Gleeble-1500D thermal simulator to investigate the hot deformation behavior of 14Cr1Mo pressure vessel steel under deformation conditions of 1050–1250 °C and strain rates of 0.01–1 s−1. Based on the experimental data, the flow stress curve of 14Cr1Mo steel was obtained, and its thermal deformation behavior was analyzed. Furthermore, the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) kinetic model and grain size model of 14Cr1Mo steel were established. These models were then integrated into the finite element software Forge® to validate the accuracy of the DRX models. The results showed excellent agreement between the simulated and experimentally measured grain sizes, with a maximum deviation of less than 8%, confirming the high accuracy of the dynamic recrystallization models. These models provide a theoretical basis for finite element simulation and microstructure control in the manufacturing of super-large pressure vessel tube sheet forgings. Full article

In the deep integration process between digital infrastructure and new economic forms, structural imbalance between the evolution rate of cloud storage technology and the growth rate of data-sharing demands has caused systemic security vulnerabilities such as blurred data sovereignty boundaries and nonlinear surges in privacy leakage risks. Existing academic research indicates current proxy re-encryption schemes remain insufficient for cloud access control scenarios characterized by diversified user requirements and personalized permission management, thus failing to fulfill the security needs of emerging computing paradigms. To resolve these issues, a revocable attribute-based proxy re-encryption scheme supporting policy-hiding is proposed. Data owners encrypt data and upload it to the blockchain while concealing attribute values within attribute-based encryption access policies, effectively preventing sensitive information leaks and achieving fine-grained secure data sharing. Simultaneously, proxy re-encryption technology enables verifiable outsourcing of complex computations. Furthermore, the SM3 (SM3 Cryptographic Hash Algorithm) hash function is embedded in user private key generation, and key updates are executed using fresh random factors to revoke malicious users. Ultimately, the scheme proves indistinguishability under chosen-plaintext attacks for specific access structures in the standard model. Experimental simulations confirm that compared with existing schemes, this solution delivers higher execution efficiency in both encryption/decryption and revocation phases. Full article

The effects of trace Ce on the microstructure and texture of non-oriented silicon steel during recrystallization and grain growth were examined using X-ray diffraction and electron backscatter diffraction. Additionally, this study focused on investigating the mechanisms by which trace Ce influences the evolution of the {114} <481> and γ-fiber textures. During the recrystallization process, as the recrystallization fraction of annealed sheets increased, the intensity of α-fiber texture decreased, while the intensities of α*-fiber and γ-fiber textures increased. The {111} <112> grains preferentially nucleated in the deformed γ-grains and their grain-boundary regions and tended to form a colony structure with a large amount of nucleation. In addition, the {100} <012> and {114} <481> grains mainly nucleated near the deformed α-grains, which were evenly distributed but found in relatively small quantities. The hindering effect of trace Ce on dislocation motion in cold-rolled sheets results in a 2–7% lower recrystallization ratio for the annealed sheets, compared to conventional annealed sheets. Trace Ce suppresses the nucleation and growth of γ-grains while creating opportunities for α*-grain nucleation. During grain growth, trace Ce reduces γ-grain-boundary migration rate in annealed sheets, providing growth space for {114} <418> grains. Consequently, the content of the corresponding {114} <481> texture increased by 6.4%, while the γ-fiber texture content decreased by 3.6%. Full article

Additive manufacturing (AM), particularly laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF), provides unmatched design flexibility for creating intricate steel structures with minimal post-processing. However, adopting L-PBF for high-performance applications is difficult due to the challenge of predicting microstructure evolution. This is because the process is sensitive to many parameters and has a complex thermal history. Thin-walled geometries present an added challenge because their dimensions often approach the scale of individual grains. Thus, microstructure becomes a critical factor in the overall integrity of the component. This study focuses on applying cellular automata (CA) modeling to establish robust and efficient process–structure relationships in L-PBF of 316L stainless steel. The CA framework simulates solidification-driven grain evolution and texture development across various processing conditions. Model predictions are evaluated against experimental electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) data, with additional quantitative comparisons based on texture and morphology metrics. The results demonstrate that CA simulations calibrated with relevant process parameters can effectively reproduce key microstructural features, including grain size distributions, aspect ratios, and texture components, observed in thin-walled L-PBF structures. This work highlights the strengths and limitations of CA-based modeling and supports its role in reliably designing and optimizing complex L-PBF components. Full article

Austenitic stainless steel inevitably undergoes deformation during application, and it is necessary to study the properties of deformed steel. This article investigates the evolution of microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance of plastic-deformed 304 steel, the evolution law of structure and properties of steel is revealed. As a result, it was found that with the increase in deformation, the grains of 304 steel were destroyed, and many small subgrains were generated internally, resulting in a significant decrease in grain size. At the same time, the content of martensitic transformation in stainless steel increased significantly. The characteristics of the surface passivation film of stainless steel also change during the deformation process. Meanwhile, with the increase in deformation, the nanohardness and wear resistance of 304 steel gradually increase, but its corrosion resistance gradually decreases. Analysis suggests that microstructural changes such as grain size and phase transformation in stainless steel lead to an improvement in its mechanical properties, while the generation of defects during deformation and changes in surface passivation film characteristics result in a deterioration of its corrosion resistance. This study can provide a reference for the forming and performance optimization of metals and has high theoretical significance and practical value. Full article

The lower sub-member of Member 2, Dongying Formation (Paleogene) in the HHK Depression hosts an extensively developed thin-bedded beach-bar system characterized by favorable source rock conditions and reservoir properties, indicating significant hydrocarbon exploration potential. Integrating drilling cores, wireline log interpretations, three-dimensional seismic data, geochemical analyses, and palynological data, this study investigates the sedimentary characteristics, sandbody distribution patterns, controlling factors, and genetic model of this lacustrine beach-bar system. Results reveal the following: (1) widespread thin-bedded beach-bar sandbodies dominated by fine-grained sandstones and siltstones, exhibiting wave ripples and low-angle cross-bedding; (2) two vertical stacking patterns, Type A, thick mudstone intervals intercalated with laterally continuous thin sandstone layers, and Type B, composite sandstones comprising thick sandstone units overlain by thin sandstone beds, both demonstrating significant lateral continuity; (3) three identified microfacies: bar-core, beach-core, and beach-margin facies; (4) key controls on sandbody development: paleoenvironmental evolution establishing the depositional framework, secondary fluctuations modulating depositional processes, strike-slip extensional tectonics governing structural zonation, paleobathymetry variations and paleotopography controlling distribution loci, and provenance clastic influx regulating scale and enrichment (confirmed by detrital zircon U-Pb dating documenting a dual provenance system). Collectively, these findings establish a sedimentary model for a thin-bedded beach-bar system under the strike-slip extensional tectonic framework. Full article

The possibility of collecting new archaeological elements useful in reconstructing the dynamics of population, production and commercial activities in the Bronze Age at the edge of the central-southern Venice Lagoon was provided between 2023 and 2024 thanks to an intervention of rescue archaeology planned during some water restoration works in the Giare–Mira area. Three small excavations revealed, approximately one meter below the current surface and covered by alluvial sediments, a rather complex palimpsest dated to the late Recent and the early Final Bronze Age. Three large circular pits containing exclusively purified grey/blue clay and very rare inclusions of vegetable fibres, and many large, fired clay vessels’ bases, walls and rims clustered in concentrated assemblages and random deposits point to potential on-site production. Two pyro-technological structures, one characterised by a sub-circular combustion chamber and a long inlet channel/praefurnium, and the second one with a sub-rectangular shape with arched niches along its southern side, complete the exceptional context here discovered. To analyse the relationship between the site and the natural sedimentary succession and to evaluate the possible extension of this site, three electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and low-frequency electromagnetic (FDEM) measurements were collected. Several manual core drillings associated with remote sensing integrated the geophysical data in the analysis of the geomorphological evolution of this area, clearly related to different phases of fluvial activity, in a framework of continuous relative sea level rise. The typology and chronology of the archaeological structures and materials, currently undergoing further analyses, support the interpretation of the site as a late Recent/early Final Bronze Age productive site. Geophysical and geomorphological data provide information on the palaeoenvironmental setting, suggesting that the site was located on a fine-grained, stable alluvial plain at a distance of a few kilometres from the lagoon shore to the south-east and the course of the Brenta River to the north. The archaeological site was buried by fine-grained floodplain deposits attributed to the Brenta River. The good preservation of the archaeological structures buried by fluvial sediments suggests that the site was abandoned soon before sedimentation started. Full article

Karst mountain areas, as complex geological systems formed by carbonate rock development, possess unique three-dimensional spatial structures and hydrogeological processes that fundamentally influence regional ecosystem evolution, land resource assessment, and sustainable development strategy formulation. In recent years, through the implementation of systematic ecological restoration projects, the ecological degradation of karst mountain areas in Southwest China has been significantly curbed. However, the research on the fine-grained land use mapping and quantitative characterization of spatial heterogeneity in karst mountain areas is still insufficient. This knowledge gap impedes scientific decision-making and precise policy formulation for regional ecological environment management. Hence, this paper proposes a novel methodology for land use mapping in karst mountain areas using very high resolution (VHR) remote sensing (RS) images. The innovation of this method lies in the introduction of strategies of geographical zoning and stratified object extraction. The former divides the complex mountain areas into manageable subregions to provide computational units and introduces a priori data for providing constraint boundaries, while the latter implements a processing mechanism with a deep learning (DL) of hierarchical semantic boundary-guided network (HBGNet) for different geographic objects of building, water, cropland, orchard, forest-grassland, and other land use features. Guanling and Zhenfeng counties in the Huajiang section of the Beipanjiang River Basin, China, are selected to conduct the experimental validation. The proposed method achieved notable accuracy metrics with an overall accuracy (OA) of 0.815 and a mean intersection over union (mIoU) of 0.688. Comparative analysis demonstrated the superior performance of advanced DL networks when augmented with priori knowledge in geographical zoning and stratified object extraction. The approach provides a robust mapping framework for generating fine-grained land use data in karst landscapes, which is beneficial for supporting academic research, governmental analysis, and related applications.
