As the prevalence of respiratory diseases continues to rise, inhalation therapy has emerged as a crucial method for their treatment. The effective transmission of medications within the respiratory tract is vital to achieve therapeutic outcomes. Given that most inhaled particles carry electrostatic charges, understanding the electrostatic effect on particle behavior in bifurcated tubes is of significant importance. This work combined Large Eddy Simulation-Lagrangian particle tracking (LES-LPT) technology to simulate particle behavior with three particle sizes (10, 20, and 50 μm) from G2 to G3 (“G” stands for generation) in bifurcated tubes, either with or without electrostatics, under typical human physiological conditions (Re = 1036). The results indicate that the electrostatic force has a significant effect on particle behavior in bifurcated tubes, which increases with particle size. Within the bifurcated tubes, the electrostatic force enhances particle movement in alignment with the secondary flow as well as intensifies the interaction of particles with local turbulent vortices and promotes particle dispersion rather than agglomeration. On the other hand, the distribution of the electrostatic field is influenced by particle behavior. Higher particle concentration presents stronger electrostatic strength, which increases with particle size. Therefore, it can be concluded that the electrostatic interactions among particles can prevent particles from aggregating and enhance the efficiency of inhalation therapy. Full article

Tropical and subtropical forests account for approximately one-third of global terrestrial gross primary productivity (GPP), and the diurnal patterns of GPP strongly regulate the land–atmosphere CO2 interactions and feedback to the climate. Combined with ground eddy-covariance (EC) flux towers, geostationary satellites offer significant advantages for continuously monitoring these diurnal variations in the “breathing of biosphere”. Here we utilized half-hourly optical signals from the Himawari-8 Advanced Himawari Imager (H8/AHI) geostationary satellite and tower-based EC flux data to investigate the diurnal variations in subtropical forest GPP and its drivers. Results showed that three machine learning models well estimated the diurnal patterns of subtropical forest GPP, with the determination coefficient (R2) ranging from 0.71 to 0.76. Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) is the primary driver of the diurnal cycle of GPP, modulated by temperature, soil water content, and vapor pressure deficit. Moreover, the effect magnitude of PAR on GPP varies across three timescales. This study provides robust technical support for diurnal forest GPP estimations and the possibility for large-scale estimations of diurnal GPP over tropics in the future. Full article

The increasing demand for effective flow control in supersonic boundary layers, particularly for mitigating shock-wave boundary-layer interactions, underscores the need to explore optimized micro-vortex generator (MVG) configurations. This study investigates the aerodynamic performance of two different MVG configurations: a two-MVG setup with a pair of close parallel-positioned MVGs and a three-MVG arrangement that includes an additional upstream unit. Both are examined within a Mach 2.5 flow regime, aiming to improve mixing and energize the boundary layer. Large Eddy Simulations (LES) were performed using high-order numerical schemes. A newly developed vortex identification method was utilized to characterize vortex structures, while turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) metrics were integrated to quantify turbulence. Findings reveal that the two-MVG configuration produces regular, symmetric vortex pairs with limited interaction. This results in a steady increase in TKE and a thickened momentum boundary layer—indicative of notable energy loss. In contrast, the three-MVG setup generates more intricate and interactive vortex formations that significantly elevate TKE levels, rapidly expand the turbulent region, and reduce energy loss downstream. The peak TKE occurs before tapering slightly. Instantaneous flow analysis further highlights chaotic, hairpin-dominated vortex structures in the three-MVG case, compared to the more orderly ones observed in the two-MVG case. Overall, the three-MVG configuration demonstrates superior mixing and boundary-layer energization potential, albeit with greater structural complexity. Full article

This study investigated the aerodynamic structures generated by transverse jet injection in supersonic flows around high-speed vehicles. The unsteady evolution of these structures was analyzed using an improved delayed detached Eddy simulation (IDDES) approach based on the Reynolds stress model (RSM). The simulations successfully reproduced experimentally observed shock systems and vortical structures. The time-averaged flow characteristics were compared with the experimental results, and good agreement was observed. The flow characteristics were analyzed, with particular emphasis on the formation of counter-rotating vortex pairs in the downstream region, as well as complex near-field phenomena, such as flow separation and shock wave/boundary layer interactions. Time-resolved spectral analysis at multiple monitoring locations revealed the presence of a global oscillation within the flow dynamics. Within these regions, pressure fluctuations in the recirculation zone lead to periodic oscillations of the upstream bow shock. This dynamic interaction modulates the instability of the windward shear layer and generates large-scale vortex structures. As these shed vortices convect downstream, they interact with the barrel shock, triggering significant oscillatory motion. To further characterize this behavior, dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) was applied to the pressure fluctuations. The analysis confirmed the presence of a coherent global oscillation mode, which was found to simultaneously govern the periodic motions of both the upstream bow shock and the barrel shock. A methane-air premixed gas explosion is one of the most destructive disasters in the process of coal mining, and the dynamic coupling between the shock wave triggered by the explosion and the surrounding rock of the roadway can lead to the destabilization of the surrounding rock structure, the destruction of equipment, and casualties. The aim of this study is to systematically reveal the propagation characteristics of the blast wave, the spatial and temporal evolution of the wall load, and the damage mechanism of the surrounding rock by establishing a two-way fluid-solid coupling numerical model. Based on the Ansys Fluent fluid solver and Transient Structure module, a framework for the co-simulation of the fluid and solid domains has been constructed by adopting the standard kε turbulence model, finite-rate/eddy-dissipation (FR/ED) reaction model, and nonlinear finite-element theory, and by introducing a dynamic damage threshold criterion based on the Drucker–Prager and Mohr–Coulomb criteria. It is shown that methane concentration significantly affects the kinetic behavior of explosive shock wave propagation. Under chemical equivalence ratio conditions (9.5% methane), an ideal Chapman–Jouguet blast wave structure was formed, exhibiting the highest energy release efficiency. In contrast, lean ignition (7%) and rich ignition (12%) conditions resulted in lower efficiencies due to incomplete combustion or complex combustion patterns. In addition, the pressure time-history evolution of the tunnel enclosure wall after ignition triggering exhibits significant nonlinear dynamics, which can be divided into three phases: the initiation and turbulence development phase, the quasi-steady propagation phase, and the expansion and dissipation phase. Further analysis reveals that the closed end produces significant stress aggregation due to the interference of multiple reflected waves, while the open end increases the stress fluctuation due to turbulence effects. The spatial and temporal evolution of the strain field also follows a three-stage dynamic pattern: an initial strain-induced stage, a strain accumulation propagation stage, and a residual strain stabilization stage and the displacement is characterized by an initial phase of concentration followed by gradual expansion. This study not only deepens the understanding of methane-air premixed gas explosion and its interaction with the roadway’s surrounding rock, but also provides an important scientific basis and technical support for coal mine safety production. Mesoscale eddies have a significant influence on primary productivity and upper-ocean variability, particularly in stratified and monsoon-driven basins like the Bay of Bengal (BoB). This study analyzes mesoscale eddies in the BoB from January 2010 to March 2020 using post-processed and gridded daily sea surface height anomaly (SLA) data from the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service. We used a hybrid detection method combining the Okubo–Weiss parameter and SLA contour analysis to identify 1880 anticyclonic and 1972 cyclonic eddies. Cyclonic eddies were mainly found in the western BoB along the east Indian coast, while anticyclonic eddies were less frequent in this area. Analysis of eddy lifespans revealed that short-lived (1-week) eddies were nearly equally distributed between anticyclonic (48.81%) and cyclonic (51.19%) types. However, for longer-lived eddies, cyclonic eddies became more prevalent, comprising 83.33% of 30-week eddies. A notable, consistent eddy presence was observed east of Sri Lanka, influencing the East India Coastal Current. Most eddies (91%) propagated west/southwestward along the western slope of the Andaman Archipelago, likely influenced by ocean currents and coastal topography, with concentrations in the Andaman Sea and central BoB. These patterns suggest significant interactions between eddies, coastal upwelling zones, and boundary currents, impacting nutrient transport and marine ecosystem productivity. This study contributes valuable insights into the dynamics of ocean circulation and the impacts of eddies, which can inform fisheries management strategies, advance climate resilience measures, expand scientific knowledge, and guide policies related to conservation and sustainable resource utilization. This work presents a high-fidelity two-way coupled Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) simulation framework for wind turbine blades, developed using the Arbitrary Hybrid Turbulence Modelling (AHTM) implemented through Very Large Eddy Simulation (VLES) in the DAFoam solver. By integrating VLES with the Toolkit for the Analysis of Composite Structures (TACS) structural solver via the OpenMDAO/MPhys framework, this work aims to accurately model the complex aeroelastic characteristics of wind turbines, specifically focusing on the NREL Phase VI wind turbine. The numerical model accounts for the effects of transient, turbulent, and unsteady aerodynamic loading, incorporating the impact of structural deflections. A comparison of the calculated results with experimental data demonstrates strong agreement in key performance metrics, including blade tip displacements, power output, and pressure distribution. This alignment confirms that the proposed model is effective at predicting wind turbine performance. One of the significant advantages of this study is the integration of advanced turbulence modeling with shell element structural analysis, enhancing the design and performance predictions of modern wind turbines. Although computationally intensive, this approach marks a significant advancement in accurately simulating the aeroelastic response of turbines, paving the way for optimized and more efficient wind energy systems. In turbine blade environments, the combination of blade curvature and accelerating flow gives rise to streamwise pressure gradients (SPGs), which substantially impact coolant–mainstream interactions. This study investigates the effect of SPGs on film cooling performance using Large Eddy Simulation (LES) for a shaped cooling hole at a density ratio of DR=1.5 under two blowing ratios: M=0.5 and M=1.6. Both favorable pressure gradient (FPG) and zero pressure gradient (ZPG) conditions are examined. LES predictions are validated against experimental data in the high blowing ratio case, confirming the accuracy of the numerical method. Comparative analysis of the time-averaged flow fields indicates that, at M=1.6, FPG enhances wall attachment of the coolant jet, reduces boundary layer thickness, and suppresses vertical dispersion. Counter-rotating vortex pairs (CVRPs) are also compressed in this process, leading to improved downstream cooling. At M=0.5, however, the ZPG promotes greater lateral coolant spread near the hole exit, resulting in superior near-field cooling performance. Instantaneous flow structures are also analyzed to further explore the unsteady dynamics governing film cooling. The Q criterion exposes the formation and evolution of coherent vortices, including hairpin vortices, shear-layer vortices, and horseshoe vortices. Compared to ZPG, the FPG case exhibits a greater number of downstream hairpin vortices identified by density gradient, and this effect is particularly pronounced at the lower blowing ratio. The shear layer instability is evaluated using the local gradient Ri number, revealing widespread Kelvin–Helmholtz instability near the jet interface. In addition, Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analysis shows that FPG shifts disturbance energy to lower frequencies with higher amplitudes, indicating enhanced turbulent dissipation and intensified coolant mixing at a low blowing ratio. Cavitating flows are of great interest in the fields of hydraulic machineries, which can significantly affect mechanical performance and safety. Despite various efforts being dedicated to figuring out the interaction between flow and cavitation fields, their correlation has not been clearly addressed. To this end, in this study, a convolutional neural network, U-Net, was adopted to build a model that can predict the vapor volume fraction from velocity fields. Large eddy simulations of cavitating flows around a Clark-Y hydrofoil were conducted, and the simulated snapshots with velocity and vapor volume fraction were adopted as a dataset for training the network. The predicted vapor volume fraction shows good agreement with the referred simulation results, with a L1 deviation lower than 2 × 10−4, considering all the snapshots. The comparable L1 deviation between the training and validation datasets suggests the existence of a strong correlation between velocity and cavitation fields. The cavitation–velocity interaction derived from using U-Net suggests that the location with zero velocity indicates the interior part of attached and cloud cavitations, and the local vortical velocity fields usually suggest the existence of cavitation shedding. Near-nozzle atomization characteristics in air-assisted spraying were investigated through a novel 3D transient model integrating Volume-of-Fluid and Large Eddy Simulation (VOF-DPM) methods, with experimental validation of droplet distributions (Malvern analyzer) and coating thickness profiles. Key findings reveal that (1) the spray field stabilizes within 30 mm downstream, achieving 80% atomization efficiency (droplets ≤ 100 μm) at 27.5 mm axial distance; (2) radial momentum originates dually from fan-shaped airflow (max 595 m/s) and transverse motion induced by central atomizing air entrainment—a previously unreported mechanism; (3) paint loading delays flow stabilization to 2.5 ms (vs. 0.7 ms for gas-only flow) while reducing peak axial velocity by 18%–22% due to gas–liquid momentum exchange; (4) auxiliary and fan airflows synergistically constrain dispersion, forming elliptical sprays with characteristic cone angles of 61.7° (short axis) and 99.1° (long axis). Significantly, surface tension plays a dual role in inhibiting droplet atomization while promoting ligament pinch-off at 8.1 mm breakup length. These results provide the first quantitative characterization of gas–liquid interactions in near-nozzle regions, enabling precise parameter control for enhanced coating uniformity on complex surfaces. In the present study, a recently developed improved Self-Adaptive Turbulence Eddy Simulation (SATES) turbulence model (marked as SATES-Mixed), is validated for the simulation of complex multiple swirling turbulent flows. The new SATES-Mixed method aims to enhance both the performances in the wall region as well as the free shear layer region. For comparisons, the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) with WALE and Smagorinsky sub-grid model is also conducted with the same numerical setups. Compared with the original widely used SATES model, the SATES-Mixed model inherits the low grid sensitivity and high accuracy for free turbulence while improving the calculation accuracy in the near-wall regions. Therefore, the prediction ability of the SATES-Mixed model is validated in challenging complex swirling flows encountered in multi-stage swirl combustion chambers. Good overall agreement between SATES-Mixed and experiments is observed with relatively coarse mesh, which is even better than the LES-WALE results. The SATES-Mixed model accurately captures the typical single-vortex tube PVC evolution characteristics in a double swirling combustor (GTMC) and effectively models the complex interactions between single/double vortex tubes in a three-stage swirling combustor, including their intertwined twisting motions and mutually evolving processes. Air pollution and climate change pose an increasingly serious threat to the sustainable development of terrestrial forest ecosystems. Extensive research in China has focused on single environmental factors, such as ozone, carbon dioxide, and climate change, but the multifactor interactions remain poorly understood. Here, we coupled the interactions of climate change, elevated CO2 concentration, and increasing O3 into the BEPS_O3 model. The gross primary production (GPP) simulated by the BEPS_O3 is verified at site scale by using the eddy covariance (EC) derived gross primary production data in China. We then investigated the impact of ozone and CO2 fertilization on woodland ecosystem gross primary production in the context of climate change during 2001–2020 over China. The results of multi-scenario simulations indicate that the gross primary production of woodland ecosystems will increase by 1–5% due to elevated CO2. However, increased ozone pollution will result in a gross primary production loss of approximately 8–9%. In the historical climate, under the combined effects of CO2 and O3, the effect of ozone on gross primary production will be mitigated by CO2 to 4–7%. In most areas, the effect of ozone on woodland ecosystems is higher than that of CO2 on vegetation photosynthesis, but CO2 gradually counteracts the effect of ozone on the ecosystem. Our simulation study provides a reference for assessing the interactive responses to climate change, and advances our understanding of the interactions of global change agents over time. In addition, the comparison of individual and combined models will provide an important basis for national emission reduction strategies as well as O3 regulation and climate adaptation in different regions. This also provides a data reference for China’s sustainable development policies. Full article

Within real-world marine settings, the operational performance of floating tidal stream turbines is impacted by wave–current interaction effects and platform motion responses. Leveraging the improved delayed detached eddy simulation (IDDES) method, this research constructs a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) numerical analysis framework for floating turbines in wave–current environments. It further investigates the hydrodynamic behaviors and motion response features of the turbine under wave–current interactions. The results show that under the combined action of regular waves and steady currents, the fluctuation amplitudes of the power coefficient and thrust coefficient of the floating turbine exhibit a positive correlation with wave height, whereas the mean values of these coefficients remain relatively stable; in contrast, the mean values of the Cp and Ct are proportional to the wave period. Additionally, the motion amplitude of the platform shows a proportional relationship with both wave height and wave period. Flow field analysis demonstrates that elevations in wave height and period result in enhanced flow turbulence, disrupted wake vortex shedding patterns, non-uniform pressure distributions across the blades, and a larger pressure differential in the blade tip area. Such conditions may potentially induce cavitation erosion and fatigue loads. The results of the research have certain academic significance and value to the development and engineering of floating tidal current energy devices. Full article

The development of compact high-speed low-pressure turbines with high efficiencies requires the characterization of the secondary flow structures and the interaction of cavity purge and leakage flows with the mainstream. During the SPLEEN project funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020, the von Karman Institute and Safran Aircraft Engines performed detailed measurements of low-pressure turbines in engine-realistic conditions (i.e., low Reynolds and high exit Mach numbers considering background turbulence, wakes, row interactions, and leakages). The SPLEEN project is thus a fundamental contribution to the progress of high-speed low-pressure turbines by delivering unique experimental databases, essential to characterize the time-resolved 3D turbine flow, and new critical knowledge to mature the design of 3D technological effects. Being able to simulate the flow and associated losses in such a configuration is both challenging and of paramount importance to help the understanding of the flow physics complementing experimental measurements. This paper focuses on the high-fidelity numerical simulation of one of the SPLEEN configuration consisting of a linear blade cascade. The objective is to provide a validated numerical setup in terms of computational domain, boundary conditions, mesh resolution and numerical scheme to reproduce the experimental results. By mean of wall-resolved large-eddy simulations, the design point characterized by an exit Mach number of 0.9 and an exit Reynolds number of 70,000 with a turbulence level of 2.4% is investigated for the baseline configuration without purge and without wake generator. The results show that the considered computational domain and the associated inlet total pressure profile play a critical role on the development of secondary flows. The isentropic Mach number distribution around the blade is shown to be robust to the mesh and numerical scheme. The development of the wake and secondary flow fields are drastically influenced by the mesh resolution and numerical scheme, impacting the resulting losses. Full article

Screw propulsors have attracted increasing attention for their potential applications in amphibious vehicles and benthic robots, owing to their ability to perform both terrestrial and underwater locomotion. To investigate their hydrodynamic characteristics, a two-stage numerical analysis was carried out. In the first stage, steady-state simulations under various advance coefficients were conducted to evaluate the influence of key geometric parameters on propulsion performance. Based on these results, a representative configuration was then selected for transient analysis to capture unsteady flow features. In the second stage, a Detached Eddy Simulation approach was employed to capture unsteady flow features under three rotational speeds. The flow field information was analyzed, and the mechanisms of vortex generation, instability, and dissipation were comprehensively studied. The results reveal that the propulsion process is dominated by the formation and evolution of tip vortices, root vortices, and cylindrical wake vortices. As rotation speed increases, vortex structures exhibit a transition from ordered spiral wakes to chaotic turbulence, primarily driven by centrifugal instability and nonlinear vortex interactions. Vortex breakdown and energy dissipation are intensified downstream, especially under high-speed conditions, where vortex integrity is rapidly lost due to strong shear and radial expansion. This hydrodynamic behavior highlights the fundamental difference from conventional propellers, and these findings provide theoretical insight into the flow mechanisms of screw propulsion.
