Bamboo scrimber is an environmentally friendly biomass building material with excellent mechanical properties. However, it is susceptible to delamination failure of the transverse fibers under compression, which limits its structural performance. To address this problem, this study utilizes steel tubes to encase bamboo scrimber, forming a novel bamboo scrimber-filled steel tubular column. This configuration enables the steel tube to provide effective lateral restraint to the bamboo material. Axial compression tests were conducted on 18 specimens, including bamboo scrimber columns and bamboo scrimber-filled steel tubular columns, to investigate the effects of steel ratio and loading mode (full-section and core loading) on the axial compression performance. The test results indicate that the external steel tubes significantly enhance the structural load-bearing capacity and deformation capacity. Primary failure modes of the composite columns include shear failure and buckling. The ultimate stress and strain of the structure are positively correlated with the steel ratio; as the steel ratio increases, the ultimate stress of the specimens can increase by up to 19.2%, while the ultimate strain can increase by up to 37.7%. The core-loading specimens exhibited superior load-bearing capacity and deformation ability compared to the full-section-loading specimens. Considering the differences in the curves for full-section and core loading, the steel tube confinement coefficient was introduced, and the predictive models for the ultimate stress and ultimate strain of the bamboo scrimber-filled steel tubular column were developed with accurate prediction. With the increasing scale of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks, leveraging non−terrestrial networks (NTNs) to complement terrestrial networks (TNs) has become a critical issue. In this paper, we investigate the issue of handover satellite selection between multiple terrestrial terminal groups (TTGs). To support effective handover decision-making, we propose a long short-term memory (LSTM)-network-based traffic prediction mechanism based on historical traffic data. Building on these predictions, we formulate the handover strategy as a Markov Decision Process (MDP) and propose an attention-enhanced rainbow-DQN-based joint traffic prediction and handover design framework (ARTHF) by jointly considering the satellite switching frequency, communication quality, and satellite load. Simulation results demonstrate that our approach significantly outperforms existing methods in terms of the handover efficiency, service quality, and load balancing across satellites. Full article

Cement-based building materials usually exhibit weak flexural behavior under high temperature or fire conditions. This paper develops a novel geopolymer with enhanced residual flexural strength, incorporating fly ash/metakaolin precursors and corundum aggregates based on our previous study, and further improves flexural performance using hybrid fibers. The flexural load–deflection response, strength, deformation capacity, toughness and microstructure are investigated by a thermal exposure test, bending test and microstructure observation. The results indicate that the plain geopolymer exhibits a continuously increasing flexural strength from 10 MPa at 20 °C to 25.9 MPa after 1000 °C exposure, attributed to thermally induced further geopolymerization and ceramic-like crystalline phase formation. Incorporating 5% wollastonite fibers results in slightly increased initial and residual flexural strength but comparable peak deflection, toughness and brittle failure. The binary 5% wollastonite and 1% basalt fibers in geopolymer obviously improve residual flexural strength exposed to 400–800 °C. The steel fibers show remarkable reinforcement on flexural behavior at 20–800 °C exposure; however, excessive steel fiber content such as 2% weakens flexural properties after 1000 °C exposure due to severe oxidation deterioration and thermal incompatibility. The wollastonite/basalt/steel fibers exhibit a positive synergistic effect on flexural strength and toughness of geopolymers at 20–600 °C. Full article

Ice accretion from marine icing events accumulating on structures poses a significant hazard to ship and offshore operations in cold regions, being relevant for offshore activities like oil explorations, offshore wind, and shipping in arctic regions. The adhesion strength of such ice is a critical factor in predicting the build-up of ice loads on structures. While the adhesion strength of freshwater ice has been extensively studied, knowledge about sea spray ice adhesion remains limited. This study intends to bridge this gap by investigating the adhesion strength of sea spray icing under controlled laboratory conditions. In this study, we built a new in situ ice adhesion test setup and grew ice at −7 °C to −15 °C on quadratic aluminium samples of 3 cm to 12 cm edge length. The results reveal that sea spray ice adhesion strength is in a significantly lower range—5 kPa to 100 kPa—compared to fresh water ice adhesion and shows a low dependency on the temperature during the spray event, but a notable size effect and influence of the brine layer thickness on the adhesion strength. These findings provide critical insights into sea spray icing, enhancing the ability to predict and manage ice loads in marine environments. Full article

In the context of the growing need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to develop sustainable solutions for the construction industry, foamed geopolymers represent a promising alternative to traditional binders and insulation materials. This study investigates the thermal properties of novel low-emission, insulating geopolymer binders made from fly ash with diatomite, chalcedonite, and wood wool aiming to assess their potential for use in thermal insulation systems in energy-efficient buildings. The stability of the foamed geopolymer structure is also assessed. Measurements of thermal conductivity, specific heat, microstructure, density, and compressive strength are presented. The findings indicate that the selected geopolymer formulations exhibit low thermal conductivity, high heat capacity and low density, making them competitive with conventional insulation materials—mainly load-bearing ones such as aerated concrete and wood wool insulation boards. Additionally, incorporating waste-derived materials reduces the production carbon footprint. The best results are represented by the composite incorporating all three additives (diatomite, chalcedonite, and wood wool), which achieved the lowest thermal conductivity (0.10154 W/m·K), relatively low density (415 kg/m3), and high specific heat (1.529 kJ/kg·K). Lubrication between the rail gauge face and wheel flange is necessary to improve vehicle performance and reduce component wear. One way to achieve this is to use a solid stick loaded against the wheel flange. This paper details twin-disc testing of eight stick products according to Annex H of EN 15427-2-1:2022 (previously Annex L of EN 16028:2012) and then describes a new assessment methodology using conditions more relevant to field application. EN 15427-2-1:2022 specifies a test involving the application of the product during wheel–rail specimen contact. Once a specified time has elapsed, product application ceases, and performance is assessed as the time taken for the friction coefficient to return to a nominal dry value. This is described as “retentivity”. In the new test, the product is applied whilst wheel and rail are out of contact, to allow the product to build up on the wheel, then the specimens are put into contact, under conditions representing 150 m of continuous, heavy flange contact; this process is repeated a set number of times. The new test showed that products that failed the current friction criteria successfully protect the wheel and rail from wear, which is ultimately the aim of the product application. Full article

The increasing presence of high-rise buildings with curved and convex facades poses significant challenges for facade-cleaning robots, particularly in terms of mobility and anchoring. To address this, we propose a rope-riding mobile anchor (RMA) system capable of repositioning the anchor point of a cleaning robot on convex building surfaces. The RMA travels horizontally along a roof-mounted nylon rope using caterpillar tracks with U-shaped grooves, and employs a four-bar linkage mechanism to fix its position securely by increasing rope contact friction. This structural principle was selected for its simplicity, stability under heavy loads, and efficient actuation. Experimental results show that the RMA can support a payload of 50.5 kg without slippage under tensions up to 495.24 N, and contributes to reducing the power consumption of the cleaning robot during operation. These findings demonstrate the RMA’s effectiveness in extending the robot’s working range and enhancing safety and stability in facade-cleaning tasks on complex curved surfaces. Full article

Background/Objectives: X-ray computed tomography (XCT) is a powerful tool for volumetric imaging, where three-dimensional (3D) images are generated from a large number of individual X-ray projection images. However, collecting the required number of low-noise projection images is time-consuming, limiting its applicability to scenarios requiring high temporal resolution, such as the study of dynamic processes. Inspired by stereo vision, we previously developed stereo X-ray imaging methods that operate with only two X-ray projections, enabling the 3D reconstruction of point and line fiducial markers at significantly faster temporal resolutions. Methods: Building on our prior work, this paper demonstrates the use of stereo X-ray techniques for 3D reconstruction of sharp object corners, eliminating the need for internal fiducial markers. This is particularly relevant for deformation measurement of manufactured components under load. Additionally, we explore model training using synthetic data when annotated real data is unavailable. Results: We show that the proposed method can reliably reconstruct sharp corners in 3D using only two X-ray projections. The results confirm the method’s applicability to real-world stereo X-ray images without relying on annotated real training datasets. Conclusions: Our approach enables stereo X-ray 3D reconstruction using synthetic training data that mimics key characteristics of real data, thereby expanding the method’s applicability in scenarios with limited training resources. The performance of reinforced concrete (RC) frame structures will gradually decrease over time, posing a threat to the safety of buildings. Although the performance of some buildings may still meet the safety requirements, they cannot meet new usage requirements. Therefore, this paper proposes a new-type joint to promote the development of research on the reinforcement and renovation of RC frame structures in response to this situation. The RC beams and columns of the joints are connected by embedded horizontal steel plate (a single plate with dimension of 150 mm × 200 mm × 5 mm), and the beams and columns are individually wrapped in steel. Through conducting low cyclic loading tests, this paper analyzes the influence of carrying out wrapped steel treatment and the thickness of wrapped steel of the beam and connector on mechanical performance indicators such as hysteresis curve, skeleton curve, stiffness, ductility, and energy dissipation. The experimental results indicate that the reinforcement using steel plate can significantly improve the dynamic performance of the joint. The effect of changing the thickness of the connector on the dynamic performance of the specimen is not significant, while increasing the thickness of wrapped steel of beam can effectively improve the overall strength of joint. The research results of this paper will help promote the application of reinforcement and renovation technology for existing buildings, and improve the quality of human living. Full article

Heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems account for the largest share of energy consumption in European Union (EU) buildings, representing approximately 40% of the final energy use and contributing significantly to carbon emissions. Latent thermal energy storage (LTES) using phase change materials (PCMs) has emerged as a promising strategy to enhance HVAC efficiency. This review systematically examines the role of latent thermal energy storage using phase change materials (PCMs) in optimizing HVAC performance to align with EU climate targets, including the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) and the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED). By analyzing advancements in PCM-enhanced HVAC systems across residential and commercial sectors, this study identifies critical pathways for reducing energy demand, enhancing grid flexibility, and accelerating the transition to nearly zero-energy buildings (NZEBs). The review categorizes PCM technologies into organic, inorganic, and eutectic systems, evaluating their integration into thermal storage tanks, airside free cooling units, heat pumps, and building envelopes. Empirical data from case studies demonstrate consistent energy savings of 10–30% and peak load reductions of 20–50%, with Mediterranean climates achieving superior cooling load management through paraffin-based PCMs (melting range: 18–28 °C) compared to continental regions. Policy-driven initiatives, such as Germany’s renewable integration mandates for public buildings, are shown to amplify PCM adoption rates by 40% compared to regions lacking regulatory incentives. Despite these benefits, barriers persist, including fragmented EU standards, life cycle cost uncertainties, and insufficient training. This work bridges critical gaps between PCM research and EU policy implementation, offering a roadmap for scalable deployment. By contextualizing technical improvement within regulatory and economic landscapes, the review provides strategic recommendations to achieve the EU’s 2030 emissions reduction targets and 2050 climate neutrality goals. The process of designing reinforced concrete (RC) buildings has traditionally relied on manually evaluating a limited number of layout alternatives—a time-intensive process that may not always yield the most functionally efficient solution. This research introduces a parametric algorithmic model for the automated optimization of RC buildings with solid slab systems. The model automates and optimizes the layout process, yielding measurable improvements in spatial efficiency while maintaining compliance with structural performance criteria. Unlike prior models that address structural or architectural parameters separately, the proposed framework integrates both domains through a unified generative design approach within a BIM environment, enabling automated evaluation of structurally viable and architecturally coherent slab layouts. Developed within the parametric visual programming environment in Dynamo for Revit, the model employs a generative design (GD) engine to explore and refine various design alternatives while adhering to structural constraints. By leveraging a BIM-based framework, this method enhances efficiency, optimizes resource utilization, and systematically balances structural and architectural requirements. The model was validated through three case studies, demonstrating cost reductions between 2.7% and 17%, with material savings of up to 13.38% in concrete and 20.87% in reinforcement, achieved within computational times ranging from 120 to 930 s. Despite the current development being limited to vertical load scenarios and being most suitable for regular slab-based configurations, the results demonstrated the model’s effectiveness in optimizing grid dimensions and reducing material quantities and costs, and highlighted its ability to streamline early-stage design processes. Meso-Scale Numerical Analysis of the Torsional Size Effect of RC Beams Reinforced with CFRP Sheets Under Combined Bending and Torsion

In practical engineering, buildings are predominantly subjected to combined forces, and reinforced concrete (RC) beams serve as the primary load-bearing components of buildings. However, there is a paucity of research on the torsional effects of RC beams, particularly concerning the torsional failure mechanisms of large-size beams. To address this gap, this paper establishes a meso-scale numerical analysis model for RC beams reinforced with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) sheets under combined bending and torsion pressures. The research analyzes how the fiber ratio and torsion-bending ratio govern torsion-induced failure characteristics and size effects in CFRP-strengthened RC beams. The results indicate that an increase in the fiber ratio leads to accumulated damage distribution in the RC beam, a gradual decrease in CFRP sheet strain, and an increase in peak load and peak torque, albeit with diminishing amplitudes; as the torsion-bending ratio increases, crack distribution becomes more concentrated, the angle between cracks and the horizontal direction decreases, overall peak load decreases, peak torque increases, and CFRP sheet strain increases; and the nominal torsional capacity of CFRP-strengthened RC beams declines with increasing size, exhibiting a reduction of 24.1% to 35.6%, which distinctly demonstrates the torsional size effect under bending–torsion coupling conditions. A modified Torque Size Effect Law is formulated, characterizing in quantitative terms the dependence of the fiber ratio and the torsion-bending ratio. Full article

The integration of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and 3D Geographic Information System (3D GIS) models provides high-precision spatial data for digital twin watersheds. To tackle the challenges of large data volumes and rendering latency in integrated models, this study proposes a three-step framework that uses Industry Foundation Classes (IFCs) as the base model and Open Scene Graph Binary (OSGB) as the target model: (1) geometric optimization through an angular weighting (AW)-controlled Quadric Error Metrics (QEM) algorithm; (2) Level of Detail (LOD) hierarchical mapping to establish associations between the IFC and OSGB models, and redesign scene paging logic; (3) coordinate registration by converting the IFC model’s local coordinate system to the global coordinate system and achieving spatial alignment via the seven-parameter method. Applied to the Santun River Basin digital twin project, experiments with 10 water gate models show that the AW-QEM algorithm reduces average loading time by 15% compared to traditional QEM, while maintaining 97% geometric accuracy, demonstrating the method’s efficiency in balancing precision and rendering performance. Creating a comfortable microclimate in the premises of buildings is currently becoming one of the priorities in the field of architecture, construction and engineering systems. The increased attention from the scientific community to this topic is due not only to the desire to ensure healthy and favorable conditions for human life but also to the need for the rational use of energy resources. This area is becoming particularly relevant in the context of global challenges related to climate change, rising energy costs and increased environmental requirements. Practice shows that any technical solutions to ensure comfortable temperature, humidity and air exchange in rooms should be closely linked to the concept of energy efficiency. This allows one not only to reduce operating costs but also to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, thereby contributing to sustainable development and environmental safety. In this connection, this study presents a parametric assessment of the influence of climatic and geometric factors on the aerodynamic characteristics of the air cavity, which affect the heat exchange process in the ventilated layer of curtain wall systems. The assessment was carried out using a combined analytical calculation method that provides averaged thermophysical parameters, such as mean air velocity (Vs), average internal surface temperature (tin.sav), and convective heat transfer coefficient (αs) within the air cavity. This study resulted in empirical average values, demonstrating that the air velocity within the cavity significantly depends on atmospheric pressure and façade height difference. For instance, a 10-fold increase in façade height leads to a 4.4-fold increase in air velocity. Furthermore, a three-fold variation in local resistance coefficients results in up to a two-fold change in airflow velocity. The cavity thickness, depending on atmospheric pressure, was also found to affect airflow velocity by up to 25%. Similar patterns were observed under ambient temperatures of +20 °C, +30 °C, and +40 °C. The analysis confirmed that airflow velocity is directly affected by cavity height, while the impact of solar radiation is negligible. However, based on the outcomes of the analytical model, it was concluded that the method does not adequately account for the effects of solar radiation and vertical temperature gradients on airflow within ventilated façades. This highlights the need for further full-scale experimental investigations under hot climate conditions in South Kazakhstan. The findings are expected to be applicable internationally to regions with comparable climatic characteristics. Ultimately, a correct understanding of thermophysical processes in such structures will support the advancement of trends such as Lightweight Design, Functionally Graded Design, and Value Engineering in the development of curtain wall systems, through the optimized selection of façade configurations, accounting for temperature loads under specific climatic and design conditions. Wind turbine blades face significant challenges from stochastic wind loads, impacting structural integrity. Traditional analysis often isolates Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) from Building Information Modeling (BIM) in the design process. This study bridges this gap by integrating BIM forward design with CFD simulation. A universal BIM modeling framework is developed for rapid blade modeling, which is compatible with ANSYS Workbench 2022 R1 through intermediate format conversion. The influence of wind load on the blades under various wind speed conditions is analyzed, and the results indicate a significant correlation between wind load intensity and blade structural response. The maximum windward pressure reaches 4.96 kPa, while the leeward suction peaks at −6.28 kPa. The displacement at the tip and middle part of the blades significantly increases with the increase in wind speed. The growth rate of displacement between adjacent speeds rises from 1.20 to 1.94, and the overall increase rate within the entire range rises from 1.02 to 4.16. These results demonstrate the feasibility of using BIM forward design in accurate performance analysis, and also extends the value of BIM in wind energy. Furthermore, a bidirectional information flow is established, where BIM provides geometry for CFD, and simulation results will inform BIM design refinement. Full article
