As vital components of urban rail transit networks, subway stations are widely scattered across diverse urban districts, whose sustainability performance exerts a notable impact on the overall urban ecological and environmental quality. This study constructs a three-dimensional numerical model to conduct a comparative assessment of the seismic behavior of subway stations adopting different bearing systems at beam-column joints. The seismic responses of two typical structural configurations, a traditional rigid-jointed subway station and another equipped with rubber isolation bearings, are examined under a series of ground motions, with due consideration of amplitude scaling effects and material nonlinearity. A comprehensive evaluation is carried out on key performance parameters, including structural acceleration responses, column rotation angles, damage evolution processes, and internal force distributions. Based on this analysis, the research clarifies the sustainability implications by establishing quantitative correlations between seismic response indices (i.e., deformation extent, damage degree, and internal force magnitudes) and post-earthquake outcomes, such as repair complexity, material requirements, carbon emissions, and socioeconomic effects. The results can advance the integrated theory of seismic-resilient and sustainable design for underground infrastructure, providing evidence-based guidance for the optimization of future subway station construction projects. To address the limitations of traditional timber mortise-and-tenon joints, particularly their low pull-out resistance and rapid stiffness degradation under cyclic loading, this study proposes a novel integrated sleeve mortise-and-tenon steel–timber composite beam–column joint. Building upon prior experimental validation and numerical model verification, a comprehensive parametric study was conducted to systematically investigate the influence of key geometric parameters on the seismic performance of the joint. The investigated parameters included beam sleeve thickness (1–10 mm), sleeve length (150–350 mm), bolt diameter (4–16 mm), and the dimensions and thickness of stiffeners. The results indicate that a sleeve thickness of 2–3 mm yields the optimal overall performance: sleeves thinner than 2 mm are prone to yielding, while those thicker than 3 mm induce stress concentration in the timber beam. A sleeve length of approximately 250 mm provides the highest initial stiffness and a ductility coefficient exceeding 4.0, representing the best seismic behavior. Bolt diameters within the range of 8–10 mm produce full and stable hysteresis loops, effectively balancing load-carrying capacity and energy dissipation; smaller diameters lead to pinching failure, whereas larger diameters trigger premature plastic deformation in the timber. Furthermore, stiffeners with a width of 40 mm and a thickness of 2 mm effectively enhance joint stiffness, promote a uniform stress distribution, and mitigate local damage. The optimized joint configuration demonstrates excellent ductility, stable hysteretic behavior, and a high load capacity, providing a robust technical foundation for the design and practical application of advanced steel–timber composite connections. This study proposes a high-strength bottom-bar interlocking and anchorage precast beam–column joint (HSRU-PBCJ), which utilizes high-strength longitudinal reinforcement combined with U-shaped anchorage at the beam bottom. Low-cycle reversed loading tests were conducted on two precast specimens and one cast-in-place specimen to evaluate their seismic performance. Based on these results, parametric analyses were conducted through numerical simulations to investigate the effects of axial compression ratio, concrete strength, beam-end longitudinal reinforcement strength, and beam-end longitudinal reinforcement ratio on the seismic performance. The results indicate that the proposed joint exhibits stable and full hysteresis loops, cumulative energy dissipation comparable to that of the cast-in-place joint, and a 23.94–26.39% increase in equivalent viscous damping after yielding, achieving a displacement ductility coefficient of 4.14, which confirms its substantially improved seismic performance. The parametric study shows that maintaining a moderate axial compression ratio (≤0.6) enhances both load-bearing capacity and energy dissipation, whereas excessive values result in strength reduction. Increasing the beam-end longitudinal reinforcement strength significantly improves load-bearing capacity but may reduce energy dissipation. In addition, improving concrete strength and appropriately increasing the reinforcement ratio can further enhance both load-bearing capacity and energy dissipation, although a balance between seismic performance and economic considerations is recommended. Extended stiffened end-plate bolted connections represent one of the most utilised steel connection types in seismic-prone regions, and several studies have been dedicated to the improvement of their performance. Recently, a new stiffened joint configuration, with a non-symmetric octagonal bolt arrangement, was proposed, highlighting its excellent performance in seismic scenarios. Therefore, two new design procedures according to both the European and North American codes were developed. Within this framework, the present work aims to investigate the performance of this innovative joint under column loss scenarios. A total of sixteen beam-to-column steel assemblies, defined by varying the beam depth and the design procedure, were numerically investigated using advanced FE models validated against experimental results. The numerical results show that the innovative joints exhibit a ductile behaviour, even better than traditional joints designed according to the current versions of EU and US codes. Indeed, the new bolt arrangement allows us to reduce the damage in the connection thanks to a better stress distribution among the bolts. Full article

Research on the configuration and mechanical performance of arch-column-tie beam joints, which combine features of arch-tie beam joints and tubular joints, remains limited, particularly for long-span structures subjected to heavy loads at high building stories. This study focuses on a joint in an engineering structure comprising a circular arch beam, a square-section inclined column, and a tie beam, where both the arch and the inclined column are concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) members. A novel joint configuration was proposed, then a refined finite element model was established. The joint’s mechanical mechanism and failure mode under axial compression in the arch beam were investigated, considering two conditions: the presence of prestressed high-strength rods and the failure of the rods. Subsequently, a parametric study was conducted to investigate the influence of variations in the web thickness of the tie beam, the steel tube wall thickness of the arched beam, the steel tube wall thickness of the supporting inclined column, and the strength grades of steel and concrete on the bearing capacity behavior and failure modes. Numerical simulation results indicate that the joint remains elastic under the design load for both conditions, meeting the design requirements. The joint reaches its ultimate capacity when extensive yielding occurs in the tie beam along the junction region with the circular arch beam, as well as in the steel tube of the arch beam. At this stage, the steel plates and concrete within the joint zone remain elastic, ensuring reliable load transfer. The maximum computed load of the model with prestressed rods was 2.28 times the design load. The absence of prestressed rods could lead to a significant increase in the high-stress area within the web of the tie beam, decreasing the joint’s stiffness by 12.4% at yielding, but have a limited effect on its maximum bearing capacity. Gradually increasing the wall thickness of the arch beam’s steel tube shifts the failure mode from arch-beam-dominated yielding to tie-beam-dominated yielding along the junction region. Increasing the steel strength grade is more efficient in enhancing the bearing capacity than increasing the concrete strength grade. Finally, a design methodology for the joint zone was established based on three aspects: local stress transfer at the bottom of the arch beam, force equilibrium between the arch beam and the tie beam, and the biaxial compression state of the concrete in the joint zone. This study evaluates the shear strength of precast concrete beam–column joints using a Combined Model based on the ACI code, with implications for sustainable structural design. A database of 87 specimens from the existing literature was compiled and classified by prestressing condition and failure mode to examine key variables affecting prediction accuracy. The model demonstrated high reliability, with average predicted-to-test shear strength ratios (Vtest/Vcal) of 1.12 for non-prestressed joints and 0.99 for prestressed joints, supporting more efficient and reliable use of precast systems. By identifying cross-sectional geometry as the dominant factor governing shear strength and failure mode, the study highlights opportunities to optimize material use, enhance structural safety, and reduce overdesign, thereby contributing to resource-efficient and sustainable construction practices. The seismic performance of a proposed bolted angle connector beam-to-column joint with a stiffener (hereinafter referred to as a BACS joint) was investigated utilizing quasi-static tests on six specimens with H-shaped steel members. The failure modes, hysteretic curves, skeleton curves, stiffness degradation, and energy dissipation capacity were analyzed. The test results indicated that the BACS joint exhibited a 28.1% higher moment resistance and a 12.6% greater equivalent viscous damping coefficient compared to a welded connection with the same specifications. Furthermore, when compared to a short-beam spliced connection with comparable steel consumption, the BACS joint demonstrated advantages in both the load-bearing capacity and the energy dissipation. The numerical analysis results based on ABAQUS software demonstrated that increasing the stiffener height could not only enhance the bending capacity and stiffness of the connection, but also promote the relocation of the plastic hinge towards the beam end, thereby improving the failure mode. The increase in the stiffener thickness led to a minor improvement in the bending capacity of the connection, yet the influence of the stiffener thickness on the connection stiffness was limited. Furthermore, the use of steel with a higher strength grade could substantially increase the bending capacity of the BACS joint, while the enhancement in stiffness was relatively modest. Therefore, economic considerations should be integrated into the engineering design process. Full article

This study investigates the cyclic behavior of reinforced concrete beam–column joints strengthened with hybrid GFRP–steel reinforcement using nonlinear finite element analysis. Six hybrid configurations—defined by varying the percentage of the total longitudinal steel reinforcement area, in the beam, replaced with GFRP bars (0%, 20%, 25%, 33%, 50%, and 100%)—were evaluated in terms of load–displacement hysteresis, stiffness degradation, dissipated energy, and crack development. A multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) was employed to quantitatively compare the six configurations. The findings demonstrate the potential of partial GFRP substitution to enhance the seismic performance of reinforced concrete beam–column joints. Full article

In practical applications, steel storage racks include a wide range of beam-to-column connections (BCCs), which have a significant impact on their structural stability, particularly under various loading conditions. This systematic review focuses on the application of the finite element method (FEM) as a complementary tool to evaluate the mechanical behavior of these connections. Key parameters that influence connection performance include the connector’s class and hook configuration, column thickness, beam height and weld position on the connector. Although the Eurocode 3 standard provides design guidelines for connections, experimental testing remains the most reliable method due to the complexity of semi-rigid connections, particularly in the context of pallet racks. Validated FEM analysis emerges as a dependable and cost-effective alternative to experiments, enabling more detailed parametric studies and improving the prediction of structural response. This review focuses on the advantages of FEM integration into design workflows via quantitative synthesis, while also emphasizing the role of contact formulations in modeling accuracy. To establish FEM as an independent predictive tool for the design and optimization of steel storage racks, future research should focus on cohesive zone modeling, ductile damage criteria, advanced contact strategies and additional machine learning (ML) techniques. In order to ensure the structural safety and serviceability of existing reinforced concrete (RC) structures, there is a compelling need to develop efficient techniques for the rapid replacement of damaged RC beams within strong-column–weak-beam structural systems. This study introduces a novel prefabricated RC beam with welded cover-plate steel sleeve and bolted splice designed to facilitate accelerated replacement and enhance construction efficiency. The proposed beam is connected to cast-in-place RC columns, forming a prefabricated novel prefabricated RC joint with a welded cover-plate steel sleeve and a bolted splice; this configuration contrasts with conventional monolithic RC joints, which are formed by integrally casting beams and columns. The assembly speed of the prefabricated system markedly surpasses that of its cast-in-place counterpart, and the resulting beam–column system is fully demountable. Finite element simulations of the novel prefabricated RC joint with welded cover-plate steel sleeve and bolted splice, performed using ABAQUS, identified the thickness of the welded end-plate as a pivotal parameter influencing the joint’s mechanical behavior. Accordingly, quasi-static tests were carried out on three novel prefabricated RC joints with welded cover-plate steel sleeves and bolted splices and one cast-in-place RC joint, with the welded end-plate thickness serving as the primary test variable. The failure patterns, hysteretic responses, energy dissipation capacity, ductility, and stiffness degradation were systematically analyzed. Experimental findings indicate that increasing the end-plate thickness effectively improves both the peak load-bearing capacity and the ductility of the joint. All prefabricated specimens exhibited fully developed spindle-shaped hysteresis loops, with ductility coefficients ranging from 3.47 to 3.64 and equivalent viscous damping ratios exceeding 0.13. All critical seismic performance metrics either met or exceeded those of the reference cast-in-place RC joint, affirming the reliability and superior behavior of the proposed novel prefabricated RC joints with welded cover-plate steel sleeves. In order to improve the seismic performance of traditional precast lightweight walls, a new precast concrete wall with beam connection and embedded steel support is proposed in this study. Six 2/3-scale specimens were designed for a quasi-static cyclic loading test, and a numerical study was carried out. Key variables include shear span ratio (0.8–1.6), wall thickness (120–200 mm), concrete strength (C25–C40), and concealed column configuration. The experimental results reveal three distinct failure modes, specifically, brace buckling, weld fracture at the lower joints, and bolt shear failure. The system shows excellent ductility (displacement ductility coefficient μ = 3.2–4.1) and energy dissipation capacity (equivalent viscous damping ratio ξ = 0.28–0.35), and its performance is 30–40% higher than that of traditional reinforced concrete walls and close to that of steel plate shear walls. The shear span ratio is reduced by 50%, the shear bearing capacity is increased by 16%, but the peak displacement is halved, and the peak load of concealed column is increased by 57%. The finite element analysis verified the experimental trends and emphasized that the shear capacity can be increased by 12–18% by widening the steel brace (relative to thickening) under the condition of constant steel volume. The results demonstrate that BIM-driven design is very important for solving connection conflicts and ensuring constructability. Parameter research shows that when the concrete strength is greater than C30, the yield load increases by 15–20%, but the influence on the ultimate bearing capacity is minimal. These findings provide an operational guide for the implementation of high-performance prefabricated walls in earthquake-resistant steel structures, and balance the details of constructability through support, connection, and BIM. Steel frame structures have been increasingly widely used in high-rise and multi-story building design. However, traditional rigid welded beam–column joints exhibit poor ductility and high residual stress, which are key reasons for their susceptibility to brittle failure under strong earthquake actions. This study proposes a new type of beam–column joint for steel frames: the corrugated web beam–column joint. In this new joint, the web of the I-beam near the beam flange is partially replaced with a corrugated web that exhibits a folding effect—this modification weakens the plastic bending capacity of the I-beam and promotes the outward movement of plastic hinges. Low-cycle reciprocating loading tests were conducted to verify the performance of two specimens, namely one with the traditional beam–column joint and the other with the corrugated web beam–column joint. Through experimental comparison, it was found that plastic hinges in the new corrugated web joint are generated at the corrugated web, while no damage occurs at the beam-end welds. This indicates that the corrugated web beam–column joint can stably achieve the outward movement of plastic hinges and avoid the location of the beam-end welds, thereby providing theoretical and experimental foundations for the structural design of new ductile steel frames. With the increasing functional and geometric complexity of modern steel buildings, irregular-shaped beam-to-column joints are becoming common in engineering practice. However, their seismic behavior remains insufficiently understood, particularly for configurations with geometric asymmetry and complex stress transfer mechanisms. This study experimentally investigates the seismic performance of irregular steel-beam-to-concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) column joints incorporating inclined internal diaphragms (IIDs), taking unequal-depth beam (UDB) and staggered beam (SB) joints as representative cases. Two full-scale joint specimens were designed and tested under cyclic loading to evaluate their failure modes, load-bearing capacity, stiffness/strength degradation, energy dissipation capacity, strain distribution, and panel zone shear behavior. Both joints exhibited satisfactory strength and initial stiffness. Although diaphragm fracture occurred at approximately 3% drift, the joints retained 45–60% of their peak load capacity, based on the average strength of several loading cycles at the same drift level after diaphragm failure, and maintained stable hysteresis with average equivalent damping ratios above 0.20. Final failure was governed by successive diaphragm fracture followed by the tearing of the column wall, indicating that the adopted diaphragm thickness (equal to the beam flange thickness) was insufficient and that welding quality significantly affected joint performance. Refined finite element (FE) models were developed and validated against the test responses, reasonably capturing global strength, initial stiffness, and the stress concentration patterns prior to diaphragm fracture. The findings of this study provide a useful reference for the seismic design and further development of internal-diaphragm irregular steel-beam-to-CFST column joints. Full article

Evaluation of Seismic Performance of K-Shaped Eccentrically Braced Steel Frame Considering Aftershocks, Link and Beam-Column Joint Damage

Damage to structural members or joints can change the load transfer path of the structure. Additionally, structures may experience severe damage or even collapse due to the impact of aftershocks. To investigate the effects of beam-column joint damage, link damage, and aftershocks on the seismic performance of K-shaped eccentrically braced steel frame (K-EBF) structures, incremental dynamic analysis, fragility analysis, and collapse resistance evaluation were conducted using examples of 12-story and 18-story K-EBF structures. The results showed that considering beam-column joint damage, link damage, and aftershocks compared to not considering them, and the maximum inter-story drift ratio (θmax) of the 12-story and 18-story K-EBF structures increased by 11.1% and 20.1%, respectively, under fortification earthquakes, and by 30.0% and 56.7%, respectively, under rare earthquakes. The failure probability of the severe damage limit state of the 12-story and 18-story K-EBF structures increased by 1.0% and 3.0%, respectively, under fortification earthquakes, and by 15.3% and 24.0%, respectively, under rare earthquakes. Additionally, the minimum collapse margin ratios (CMRP = 10%) of the two structures decrease by 27.8% and 32.3%, respectively. The influence of aftershocks on the structural seismic response tends to intensify as the intensity of ground motion increases, and the beam-column joint damage and link damage further increases the failure probability of different damage limit states, leading to a decrease in the minimum collapse resistance coefficient of the structure. Therefore, in the seismic performance analysis of K-EBF structures, the effects of beam-column joint damage, link damage, and aftershocks should be fully considered to accurately reflect the response of structures under seismic actions. Overall, the impact of link damage, as well as aftershocks, on the structural collapse resistance is greater than that of beam-column joint damage. Full article
