Among the new strategies for managing diseases in agricultural crops is the application of metallic nanoparticles due to their ability to inhibit the development of phytopathogenic microorganisms and to induce plant defense responses. Therefore, this research evaluated the effects of silver (AgNPs), zinc oxide (ZnONPs), and silicon dioxide (SiO2NPs) nanoparticles on symptom progression and physiological parameters in two pathosystems: Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato (Psto) in tomato (pathosystem one, culturable pathogen) and Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum (CaLso) in pepper plants (pathosystem two, non-culturable pathogen). For in vitro pathosystem one assays, SiO2NPs did not inhibit Psto growth. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was 31.67 ppm for AgNPs and 194.3 ppm for ZnONPs. Furthermore, the minimum lethal concentration (MLC) for AgNPs was 100 ppm, while for ZnONPs, it was 1000 ppm. For in planta assays, ZnONPs, AgNPs, and SiO2NPs reduced the number of lesions per leaf, but only ZnONPs significantly decreased the severity. Regarding pathosystem two, AgNPs, ZnONPs, and SiO2NPs application delayed symptom progression. However, only AgNPs significantly reduced severity percentage. Moreover, treatments with AgNPs and SiO2NPs increased the plant height and dry weight compared to the results for the control. Full article

A novel acid-free oxygen pressure leaching for the extraction of zinc from hemimorphite was proposed in this study. Green vitriol (FeSO4·7H2O), as one of the important industrial by-products, was used as the leaching reagent to separate zinc from silicon and iron. The effect of leaching conditions, including Fe/Zn molar ratio, leaching temperature, pressure, and reaction time, on the leaching efficiency of zinc, Fe, and Si was investigated systematically. The results showed that the molar ratio of Fe/Zn and leaching temperature play a pivotal role in determining the leaching efficiency rate of Zn. Under the optimized leaching conditions (Fe/Zn molar ratio = 6:1, 150 °C, 1.8 × 106 Pa, and leaching time of 2 h), the leaching efficiency of Zn reached 98.80% and the leaching efficiencies of Fe and Si were 0.76% and 16.80%, respectively. In addition, the shrinking core model was established to represent the relationship between the rate control step and the leaching conditions. The leaching process was controlled by chemical reaction and diffusion, and the activation energy of the leaching process is 97.14 kJ/mol. Full article

The interest in macromolecular alkoxysilyl-functionalized hybrids (self-assembling or nanostructured), which could be used as precursors in biomimetic silica precipitation and for the synthesis of hollow spherical silica particles, is growing. Nevertheless, reports on all-organosilicon systems for bioinspired silica precipitation are scarce. Therefore, a new kind of polyalkoxysilane macromonomer–linear polysilsesquioxane (LPSQ) of ladder-like backbone, functionalized in side chains with trimethoxysilyl groups (LPSQ-R-Si(OMe)3), was designed following this approach. It was obtained by photoinitiated thiol-ene addition of 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane to the vinyl-functionalized polysilsesquioxane precursor, carried out in situ in tetraethoxysilane (TEOS). The mixture of LPSQ-R-Si(OMe)3 and TEOS (co-monomers) was used in a sol–gel process conducted under acidic conditions (0.5 M HCl/NaCl) in the presence of Pluronic® F-127 triblock copolymer as a template. LPSQ-R-Si(OMe)3 played a key role for the formation of microparticles of a spherical shape that were formed under the applied conditions, while their size (as low as 3–4 µm) was controlled by the stirring rate. The hybrid materials were hydrophobic and showed good thermal and oxidative stability. Introduction of zinc acetate (Zn(OAc)2) as an additive in the sol–gel process influenced the pH of the reaction medium, which resulted in structural reinforcement of the hybrid microparticles owing to more effective condensation of silanol groups and a relative increase of the content of SiO2. The proposed method shows directions in designing the properties of hybrid materials and can be translated to other silicon–organic polymers and oligomers that could be used to produce hollow silica particles. The established role of various factors (macromonomer structure, pH, and stirring rate) allows for the modulation of particle morphology. Full article

Tomatoes are a fundamental part of the daily diet, rich in carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, carotenoids, and polyphenols. Nonetheless, optimal fruit yield and quality typically depend on the application of synthetic agrochemicals. However, the irrational use of these agrochemicals has caused various environmental problems. Therefore, it is necessary to develop alternatives to conventional agrochemical products. Applying nanomaterials as fertilizers in tomato production is emerging as a promising approach, with documented improvements in germination, vegetative development, and fruit yield. Therefore, we present a comprehensive review of recent developments (2015–2024) in the application of nanomaterials in tomato crops, with a particular emphasis on the significance of nanomaterial characteristics in their role as fertilizers. Several types of nanomaterials, such as ZnO, Ag, TiO2, Si, hydroxyapatite, P, Zn, Se, CuO, Cu, Fe, Fe2O3, CaO, CaCO3, and S, have been evaluated as fertilizers for tomato crops, with ZnO nanoparticles being the most extensively studied. However, it is pertinent to conduct further research on the less-explored nanomaterials to gain a deeper understanding of their effects on seed germination, plant growth, and fruit quality and quantity. Bioactive glasses are known for their surface reactivity and ability to bond with bone tissue through the formation of hydroxyapatite. This study investigates the effects of substituting ultrapure water with natural geothermal waters from the Azores in the sol–gel synthesis of 45S5 and MgO-modified bioglasses. Using high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), we examined how the mineral composition of the waters influenced the chemical environment and network connectivity of the glass surface. The presence of trace ions, such as Mg2+, Sr2+, Zn2+, and B3+, altered the silicate structure, as evidenced by binding energy shifts and peak deconvolution in O 1s, Si 2p, P 2p, Ca 2p, and Na 1s spectra. Thermal treatment further promoted polymerization and reduced hydroxylation. Our findings suggest that mineral-rich waters act as functional agents, modulating the reactivity and structure of bioactive glass surfaces in eco-sustainable synthesis routes. Full article

A series of glasses (0.48SiO2 − [0.40-x]ZnO − 0.12CaO-xGa2O3, x = 0, 0.8, 0.16) was developed to formulate a series of Ga-containing glass polyalkenoate cements (GPCs). The solubility of GPCs was tested using DI water, and it was found that the sample containing the highest mol% of Ga, LGa-2, had the most Ga ion release. The GPCs were incubated in SBF, and SEM/EDS analysis revealed that the at% of P increased, while the at% of Si decreased, highlighting the CaP precipitation on the GPC surface. The at% of Ga also decreased, reinforcing the Ga release from the GPC. Cellular testing against fibroblasts and osteoblasts showed that a concentration of 25 mg/mL of the liquid extracts from the LGa-2 GPC had increased cell viability compared to other concentrations and GPCs tested. Antibacterial studies against E. coli and S. epidermidis demonstrated inhibition zones around the GPCs, highlighting their effectiveness in the elimination of bacteria on contact. Full article

To investigate the corrosion resistance of 60Si2MnA spring steel coated with Zn-Al in a domestic atmospheric environment containing harmful salts, the corrosion environmental factors (temperature, humidity, deposited salts, and pH) were obtained through field research. The deliquescence and weathering behavior of harmful salts were studied using impedance methods to establish their characteristic curves. Additionally, a self-designed salt deposition test apparatus was employed to conduct accelerated atmospheric corrosion tests under constant salt deposition (10 g/m2) and controlled temperature and humidity conditions (20 °C/75% RH and 40 °C/75% RH) over different corrosion periods. The results show that noticeable red rust appeared on the samples after one month of corrosion. As the temperature increased, the consumption of the coating accelerated. XRD and Raman analyses reveal that the main corrosion products of the coating materials were ZnO, Zn(OH)2, and Zn5(CO3)2(OH)6, while the red rust primarily consisted of iron oxides and hydroxides. In the early stages of corrosion, the self-corrosion current density was relatively low due to the protective effects of the coating and the corrosion product layer, indicating good corrosion resistance. However, in the later stages, the integrity of the coating and the corrosion product layer deteriorated, leading to a significant increase in the self-corrosion current density and a decline in corrosion resistance. This study provides a data foundation for understanding the corrosion behavior of Zn-Al-coated spring steel in atmospheric environments and offers theoretical insights for developing more corrosion-resistant coatings and optimizing anti-corrosion measures. Microwave dielectric ceramics are indispensable in modern communication technologies, playing a pivotal role in components such as filters, oscillators, and antennas. Among these materials, ZnAl2O4 ceramics have garnered attention for their excellent quality factor (Q × f) and low dielectric constant (εr). However, their high sintering temperature (~1650 °C) limits practical applications. This study investigates ZnAl2-x(Zn0.5Si0.5)xO4 (ZAZS) (x = 0.1–0.9) ceramics, where [Zn0.5Si0.5]3+ substitutes Al3+, to reduce sintering temperature while maintaining high-performance microwave dielectric properties. ZAZS ceramics were synthesized via the solid-state reaction method and characterized for their structural, morphological, and dielectric properties. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the formation of a single-phase solid solution up to x = 0.8, with minor secondary phases appearing at x = 0.9. The substitution increased lattice parameters and enhanced material densification, as observed through SEM and relative density calculations. Microwave dielectric measurements showed that ZAZS ceramics achieved a maximum Q × f of 20,200 GHz and a τf value reduced to −62 ppm/°C at x = 0.8, while εr decreased from 7.90 to 6.98. Bond-valence calculations reveal that the reduction of the average Al/Zn/Si–O bond valence weakens octahedral rigidity, systematically tuning τf toward zero. These results demonstrate that ZAZS ceramics, with a reduced sintering temperature of 1400 °C, exhibit excellent potential for application in low-loss microwave devices. Full article

The separation of particles smaller than 1 µm either by composition or by size is still a challenge. For the separation of SiO2 and SnO2, the creation of a selective separation feature and the specific adsorption of salts and surfactants were investigated. The adsorption of various salts, e.g., AlCl3, ZnCl2, MnCl2 and MgCl2 were therefore analyzed, and the necessary concentration for the charge reversal of the material was determined. It was noticed that the investigated materials differ in their isoelectric point (IEP) and therefore in their adsorption behavior because only ZnCl2 and MgCl2 are suitable for a charge reversal of both metal oxides. The phase transfer of the pure material at different pH values with ZnCl2 or MgCl2 and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) revealed that the adsorption behavior of the particle has an influence on the phase transfer. As a result, the phase transfer of SiO2 is pH dependent, whereas the phase transfer of SnO2 operates over a wider pH range. This allowed the separation of SiO2 and SnO2 to be controlled by the salt and surfactant concentration as well as pH. The separation of SiO2 and SnO2 was investigated for various parameters such as salt and surfactant concentration, particle concentration and composition of the mixture. Also, pH 8, where a selective phase transfer for SiO2 occurs, and pH 6, where the greatest difference between the materials exists, were also investigated. By comparing the parameters, it was found that the combination of ZnCl2/SDS and MgCl2/SDS enables a selective separation of the materials. Furthermore, it was also found that the concentration of SDS has a significant effect on the separation, as the formation of a bilayer structure is important for the separation, and therefore, higher SDS concentrations are required at higher particle concentrations to increase the separation efficiency. Large-cation A sites (A = K, Na) are located in the channels of the pseudo-framework. The achyrophanite structure can be described as stuffed, with the defect heteropolyhedral pseudo-framework derivative of the orthorhombic Fe3+AsO4 archetype. The mineral is named from the Greek άχυρον, straw, and φαίνομαι, to appear, in allusion to its typical straw-yellow color and long prismatic habit of crystals. Full article

The interactive effects between nano-silicon dioxide (n-SiO2) and elevated CO2 (eCO2; 645 ppm) on soybean physiology, nitrogen fixation, and nutrient dynamics under climate stress remain underexplored. This study elucidates their combined effects under ambient (aCO2; 410 ppm) and eCO2 conditions. eCO2 + n-SiO2 synergistically enhanced shoot length (30%), total chlorophyll (112.15%), and photosynthetic rate (103.23%), alongside improved stomatal conductance and intercellular CO2 (17.19%), optimizing carbon assimilation. Nodulation efficiency increased, with nodule number and biomass rising by 48.3% and 53.6%, respectively, under eCO2 + n-SiO2 versus aCO2. N-assimilation enzymes (nitrate reductase, nitrite reductase, glutamine synthetase, glutamate synthase) surged by 38.5–52.1%, enhancing nitrogen metabolism. Concurrently, phytohormones (16–21%) and antioxidant activities (15–22%) increased, reducing oxidative markers (18–22%), and bolstering stress resilience. Nutrient homeostasis improved, with P, K, Mg, Cu, Fe, Zn, and Mn elevating in roots (13–41%) and shoots (13–17%), except shoot Fe and Zn. These findings demonstrate that n-SiO2 potentiates eCO2-driven benefits, amplifying photosynthetic efficiency, nitrogen fixation, and stress adaptation through enhanced biochemical and nutrient regulation. This synergy underscores n-SiO2 role in optimizing crop performance under future CO2-rich climates, advocating nano-fertilizers as sustainable tools for climate-resilient agriculture. Full article

This study conducted a quantitative characterization of the interlayer oxidation zones in the uranium-bearing reservoir of the Saihan Formation in the central Wulanchabu Subbasin of the Erlian Basin through sand dispersion system mapping, the analysis of sedimentary debris components, environmentally sensitive parameters, and elemental geochemical characteristics. The formation mechanisms and controlling factors of interlayer oxidation zones were investigated, along with uranium mineralization patterns. Research findings reveal that the sandbodies in the study area primarily consist of red sandstone, yellow sandstone, gray ore-bearing sandstone, and primary gray sandstone, representing strong oxidation zones, weak oxidation zones, transitional zones, and reduction zones, respectively. Although the mineral debris content shows minimal variation among different zones, feldspar dissolution is more prevalent in oxidized zones. During interlayer oxidation, environmentally sensitive parameters exhibit an ascending trend from strong oxidation zones through weak oxidation zones and reduction zones to mineralized transitional zones. Four transition metal elements (Co, Ni, Zn, and Mo) demonstrate enrichment in mineralized transitional zones. The development of interlayer oxidation zones is directly controlled by reservoir heterogeneity and sedimentary environments. Oxidation subzones primarily occur in sandbodies with moderate thickness (40–80 m), sand content ratios of 40%–80%, and 2–10 or 10–18 mudstone barriers (approximately 20 m thick), mainly in braided river channels and channel margin deposits. Reduction zones develop in thicker sandbodies (~100 m) with higher sand contents (~80%), fewer mudstone barriers (2–8 layers), greater thickness (40–80 m), and predominantly channel margin deposits. Transitional zones mainly occur in braided distributary channels and floodplain deposits. When oxygen-bearing uranium fluids infiltrate reservoirs, oxygen reacts with reductants like organic matter, whereFe2+ oxidizes to Fe3+, S2− reacts with oxygen, and U4+ oxidizes to U6+, migrating as uranyl complexes. As oxygen depletes, Fe3+ reduces to Fe2+, combining with S2− to form pyrite between mineral grains. Uranyl complexes reduce to precipitate as pitchblende, while some U4+ reacts with SiO44−, forming coffinite, occurring as colloids around quartz debris or pyrite. The concurrent enrichment of certain transition metal elements occurs during this process. Full article

This paper presents the first demonstration and comparison of two identical oscillator circuits employing piezoelectric zinc oxide (ZnO) microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) resonators, implemented on conventional printed-circuit-board (PCB) and three-dimensional (3D)-printed acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) substrates. Both oscillators operate simultaneously at dual frequencies (260 MHz and 437 MHz) without the need for additional circuitry. The MEMS resonators, fabricated on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafers, exhibit high-quality factors (Q), ensuring superior phase noise performance. Experimental results indicate that the oscillator packaged using 3D-printed chip-carrier assembly achieves a 2–3 dB improvement in phase noise compared to the PCB-based oscillator, attributed to the ABS substrate’s lower dielectric loss and reduced parasitic effects at radio frequency (RF). Specifically, phase noise values between −84 and −77 dBc/Hz at 1 kHz offset and a noise floor of −163 dBc/Hz at far-from-carrier offset were achieved. Additionally, the 3D-printed ABS-based oscillator delivers notably higher output power (4.575 dBm at 260 MHz and 0.147 dBm at 437 MHz). To facilitate modular characterization, advanced packaging techniques leveraging precise 3D-printed encapsulation with sub-100 μm lateral interconnects were employed. These ensured robust packaging integrity without compromising oscillator performance. Furthermore, a comparison between two transistor technologies—a silicon germanium (SiGe) heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) and an enhancement-mode pseudomorphic high-electron-mobility transistor (E-pHEMT)—demonstrated that SiGe HBT transistors provide superior phase noise characteristics at close-to-carrier offset frequencies, with a significant 11 dB improvement observed at 1 kHz offset. These results highlight the promising potential of 3D-printed chip-carrier packaging techniques in high-performance MEMS oscillator applications. Full article
