The Turki Mountain Tomb, one of the three most representative Liao Dynasty tombs, has yielded numerous exquisite gold and silver artifacts during excavation that have drawn global attention for their superb craftsmanship and distinctive ethnic and period characteristics. However, their manufacturing technology had seldom been studied. In this paper, alloy composition analysis and surface microscopic observation were performed on the single-eared octagonal gold cup unearthed from the Turki Mountain Tomb, utilizing portable X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (p-XRF) and an ultra-depth field microscope. The composition results at different base material locations of the gold cup were similar, with gold content ranging from 84% to 88% and silver content ranging from 10% to 13%. The p-XRF spectra at the exact center of the ring foot, as well as the pearl roundel on the abdominal ridge and rim, showed dominant Au with minor Ag content. Therefore, it could be concluded that the material of the gold cup was made of Au-Ag alloy. Microscopic observation preliminarily revealed that the manufacturing process involved casting, engraving, and welding. The single-eared octagonal gold cup exhibited numerous conspicuous shrinkage cavities, and it was inferred that the gold cup was formed using casting technology. After the cup body, ring foot, and finger pad were cast separately, they were welded together to form the complete gold cup. In addition, green solder and insufficient fusion of welding material were found between the weld seam of the cup body and the ring foot. The exterior surface of the gold cup was adorned with patterns, such as fish-toe circle, upward lotus motif, and pearl roundels. The average diameter of the fish-toe circle was 303 μm. By examining the overlapping conditions of engraving, it could be inferred that the proposed engraving sequence was to engrave the fish-toe circle first, followed by the flower patterns. As a representative of the exquisite artifacts from the Turki Mountain Tomb, the research of the composition and manufacturing technology of the gold cup provides reference data for the scientific analysis of Liao Dynasty gold and silver artifacts. The Casas Novas gold deposit is located in the Escoural Gold District of the Ossa Morena Zone (OMZ, SW Iberia) and consists of an orogenic gold system characterized by structurally controlled mesothermal lodes, which are related to a major shear zone. The mineralization shows evidence of two distinct metallogenic phases during regional metamorphism: (i) an early higher-temperature stage marked by Co-Ni-rich loellingite hosting Au-(Ag) alloys accompanied by pyrrhotite, and (ii) a later low-temperature stage with arsenopyrite, gold, maldonite and Bi-Te sulfosalts. Detailed textural analysis documents the evolution from initial Au-Ag alloys enclosed in Co-Ni-rich loellingite to subsequent Au-Bi-Te phases and newly formed arsenopyrite. The results show the thermal and chemical changes in the system, demonstrating the importance of fluid–rock interactions in the redox conditions, which became more oxidized, controlling the gold deposition. The comprehensive overview of the processes that led to the concentration of gold in the Casas Novas deposit provides a valuable contribution to the ongoing studies into the auriferous region of the Escoural Gold District. The magmatic Ni-Co-Cu mineralization in the Iken deposit in the central part of the Kun-Manie complex, Amur Oblast, Russia, hosted by an olivine-bearing websterite, is of a low-sulfide type. The fine-grained disseminations of base metal sulfides (BMS), dominantly pyrrhotite, pentlandite (a major source of Ni of industrial importance), and chalcopyrite, are followed by a scarce Pd-Pt-Ag mineralization. Elevated contents of Al in orthopyroxene (mean 2.78 wt.% Al2O3) along with Al–Na enrichment in clinopyroxene (diopside; mean 5.10 wt.% Al2O3) are associated with highly aluminous compositions of low-chromium members of the spinel–hercynite series. High levels of TiO2 in kaersutite and titanian phlogopite also reflect a pronounced degree of fractionation of the ore-forming melt. Minor portions of sulfide melt are distributed evenly as a result of immiscibility at advanced stages of orthopyroxene crystallization, after the formation of olivine. Differentiated grains of droplet-like BMS largely settled in situ close to grain boundaries of orthopyroxene or occupied interstitial spaces of pyroxenes and olivine in association with spinel–hercynite and fluorapatite. A combination of late saturation in S with relatively quick cooling rates of the hypabyssal body prevented the effective settlement and accumulation of sulfide droplets in the ore zone. The well-developed lamellae of troilite (Fe50S50) exsolved from the host pyrrhotite Fe48S52 during subsolidus cooling, as a consequence of a low-temperature reaction triggered by a sudden drop in fO2. An influx of mantle-derived fluid bearing CO2, CO, and CH4 with the rising magma could be the primary cause of the fO2 reduction. Also, graphite-bearing metasedimentary rocks could have been assimilated. Tiny grains of minerals of noble metals (moncheite and merenskyite with essential amounts of melonite component, sperrylite, hessite, alloy Au63.2Ag36.8, and argentopentlandite) deposited late in a fluid-enriched medium under submagmatic conditions. The outcomes of a standard geochemical, geophysical and petrographical approach to exploration at Lead Trial, a small prospect in central Scotland, have been compared to the interpretation of a parallel gold compositional study describing 703 gold particles from local in situ and alluvial occurrences. Standard exploration approaches identified a 4.5 km2 zone hosting an array of numerous auriferous (to 17 g/t Au), vuggy, brecciated quartz-galena ± sphalerite veins culminating in the identification of a drill target. The gold study identified three gold compositional types: two 23–32 wt.% Ag alloys with a Zn-Pb-Cu mineral inclusion assemblage differentiated by sphalerite abundance, and a 5–16 wt.% Ag alloy with a Mo-Bi-Pb-Cu-Fe inclusion signature, yet to be correlated with either float or outcrop. Spatial distribution of the gold types indicates lateral variation and probably vertical variation within a single magmatic hydrothermal system. Integration of gold particle studies with early stages of exploration offers rapid insights into the nature and distribution of mineralization when very limited information is available and is mutually supportive of standard exploration approaches. Machine learning interatomic potentials (MLIPs) are typically developed for globally ordered homogeneous systems (GOHomS), which exhibit only minor local deviations from equilibrium configurations. Consequently, most existing MLIPs trained on GOHomS often perform inadequately when applied to locally ordered heterogeneous systems (LOHetS), e.g., substitutional alloying elements in multicomponent alloys. To describe doping alloy systems, we develop a fine-tuned MLIP based on the MACE foundation model, specifically tailored for Mo-based dilute alloys containing one or two out of 20 substitutional elements: Cr, Fe, Mn, Nb, Re, Ta, Ti, V, W, Y, Zr, Al, Zn, Cu, Ag, Au, Hg, Co, Ni, and Hf. The model is built on more than 7000 equilibrium and non-equilibrium structures derived from first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The optimized large-scale fine-tuned model attains state-of-the-art accuracy, with a mean absolute error (MAE) and root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 2.27 meV/atom and 3.79 meV/atom for energy predictions, and 13.83 meV/Å and 24.26 meV/Å for force predictions, respectively. Systematic evaluation under different data-splitting protocols shows that unknown element extrapolation remains challenging under strict dopant hold-out, whereas substantially improved accuracy can be achieved in partial-exposure transfer settings. The fine-tuned models reduce the MAE by approximately 7–10 times compared to models trained from scratch, and by 10–20 times relative to zero-shot foundation models. This performance gain remains consistent across varying dataset sizes (equilibrium vs. non-equilibrium structures) and model scales. Our work illustrates the efficacy of transfer learning from globally ordered homogeneous systems to locally ordered heterogeneous multicomponent alloy environments. However, direct transfer to entirely unknown elements remains challenging, especially when proxy embeddings are employed without fine-tuning. Thus, to achieve high accuracy without incurring additional cost, it is essential to include unknown elements in the training dataset while minimizing the number of configurations containing known elements. Moreover, the current findings are primarily validated for dilute Mo-based alloy systems. Extending this approach to more compositionally complex alloy spaces may necessitate additional data and further fine-tuning. Full article

Plasmon-driven surface catalysis has attracted significant interest due to its capacity to integrate near-field enhancement and hot-carrier effects at the nanoscale synergistically. In this work, nanoporous Au-Ag shells (NPASs) were prepared via a galvanic replacement process. The coupling of p-nitrothiophenol (PNTP) to form 4,4′-dimercaptoazobenzene (DMAB) was used as a model reaction to evaluate plasmonic catalytic kinetics on three substrates, including NPASs, Au nanoparticles (Au NPs), and Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs), under 532 and 633 nm excitation. TEM, XRD, EDX, and HAADF-STEM analyses confirmed that the NPASs exhibited a hollow nanoporous morphology and a homogeneous Au-Ag alloy structure. UV-Vis extinction spectroscopy revealed a broadband response in the visible region, with a main peak at ~683 nm and a shoulder at ~542 nm. Based on in situ time-resolved SERS monitoring and first-order kinetic fitting, all three substrates showed faster conversion rates under 532 nm excitation. To quantitatively assess wavelength selectivity, a wavelength-dependent factor (R = k532/k633) was introduced. Quantitative analysis demonstrated that Au NPs exhibited the most significant R value (15.0), followed by Ag NPs (2.3), whereas NPASs exhibited the smallest R value (1.7). This distinct difference indicated that the wavelength selectivity of monometallic Au NPs was primarily governed by the resonant matching between the LSPR and the incident wavelength. In contrast, the broadband extinction of NPASs enabled strong optical responses at both wavelengths, resulting in a significantly weaker wavelength dependence. This work provides essential experimental evidence for designing plasmonic catalytic substrates with improved wavelength adaptability. Full article

The surface modification of medical implant materials stands as a favorable strategy to enhance their biological properties including their antibacterial effect and biocompatibility. Recently, both in vitro and in vivo studies have shown that film heterostructures based on a combination of noble metal sublayers and an active component, such as silver and gold nanoparticles, offer unique advantages. The present work develops this promising direction and focuses on a series of combinations of noble metal coatings functionalized with bimetallic nanoclusters obtained by vapor-phase deposition methods onto the surfaces of Ti-based implants. This investigation investigates the influence of sequential deposition (AgAu or AuAg) and noble metal component (Ir or Au) on the coating morphology and the active component chemical form and release. Thus, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy have been applied to characterize the samples before and after in vivo biological studies (rat models, 1 and 3 months). Histological and blood analyses confirmed the high biocompatibility of all the heterostructures. The samples also showed a pronounced in vitro biocidal effect against Gram-positive (S. epidermalis) and Gram-negative (P. aeruginosa) bacteria that correlates with a dynamic of silver release. The AuAg/M heterostructures demonstrated superior biological characteristics compared to their AgAu/M counterparts, suggesting enhanced both long-term integration and antibacterial action. In response to the growing industrial demand for ultra-high-purity gold, a vacuum distillation-assisted hydrometallurgical process is developed in this study for the industrial-scale production of 99.999% pure (5N) gold from crude Au–Ag alloy feedstocks. This integrated approach combines vacuum distillation, aqua regia dissolution, solvent extraction, and in situ reduction. An alloy containing approximately 56.47 wt% Au and 43.06 wt% Ag was first vacuum distilled, yielding a pre-enriched alloy with 94.76 wt% Au and less than 5.17 wt% Ag. The enriched Au alloy was subjected to aqua regia dissolution, solvent extraction, and Na2SO3-assisted reduction. The influence of the liquid-to-solid ratio, settling time, phase ratio, extraction time, and centrifugation speed on gold purity and recovery was systematically investigated. Under optimized conditions, the process achieved 99.999% purity and over 99.5% overall recovery, meeting the GB/T 25933-2010 standard. The use of Na2SO3 as a combined reducing and stripping agent simplified the operation, lowered reagent consumption, and improved environmental compatibility. This method provides a scalable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional refining techniques and is suitable for advanced manufacturing applications. Full article

Gold–silver nanoshells (GS-NSs) are hollow spherical nanoparticles with an alloyed Ag-Au shell. GS-NSs exhibit a tunable localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in the visible to near-IR wavelengths as a function of composition and shell thickness and offer greater stability across pH ranges compared to other metal nanoparticles. These properties make GS-NSs promising materials for diagnostics, photothermal therapy, and photocatalysis. However, current research has explored GS-NSs only in aqueous systems, since they immediately aggregate in other solvents, limiting their utility. This paper provides an in-depth study of the choice and effect of non-thiol ligands on the stability and phase-transfer of GS-NSs from aqueous to non-aqueous solvents, such as ethylene glycol, tetrahydrofuran, dichloromethane, and toluene. Ligand exchange for functionalization of GS-NSs was performed with Triton X-100 (TX100), sodium stearate (NaSt), polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC), prior to phase-transfer. The nanoparticles were phase-transferred to the non-aqueous solvents, and the stability of the colloids in the various solvents before and after functionalization was recorded with UV–visible spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential (ζ), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The study was also extended to include silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to evaluate broad-range applicability. Among the ligands studied, HPC functionalization demonstrated the widest range of phase-transfer stability across 21 days for all three particle systems studied. UV–vis spectroscopy demonstrated sustained LSPR integrity after HPC functionalization in EG, THF, and DCM. SEM, TEM, and hydrodynamic size measurements by DLS further confirmed no aggregation in EG, THF, and DCM but suggested possible twinning or clustering in the solution. Overall, this work successfully identified non-toxic alternatives to expand the LSPR stability of citrate-synthesized metal nanoparticles in organic solvents. Full article

Nanoporous gold nanoparticles (np-AuNPs) combine inertness, a nanoscale structure, and a porous framework with high surface area, conductivity, and biocompatibility, making them ideal for biosensing, catalysis, fuel cells, and drug delivery. Their open pore structure and low-coordinated atoms enhance biomolecule capture and mass transfer, while their tunable size, pore volume, and ease of surface modification make them promising biosensor transducers. However, synthesizing colloidal np-AuNPs in a simple way with controllable size and scalability remains challenging. The existing approaches mostly rely on specialized equipment, complex setups, and expert knowledge, while still facing challenges in terms of scalability. In this study, we present a simple, seedless, wet-chemical synthesis of colloidal np-AuNPs via the co-reduction of Au/Ag alloys followed by dealloying. By adjusting the Au:Ag ratio, we produced np-AuNPs sized ~120–530 nm, which were immobilized on electrodes for detecting lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a toxic component of Gram-negative bacterial membranes. The LPS biosensor exhibited excellent sensitivity towards detecting wild-type LPS, with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.1244 ng/L. This work demonstrates the effective synthesis and application of np-AuNPs in LPS biosensing. Full article

Au-Ag alloy nanoshells (ANSs) were synthesized via chemical reduction, exhibiting superior plasmonic photocatalytic performance. TEM revealed uniform hollow structures (~80 nm), while EDS mapping confirmed homogeneous Au-Ag distribution throughout the shell. According to EDX analysis, the alloy contained 71.40% Ag by weight. XRD verified the formation of a substitutional solid solution without phase separation. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated using p-nitrothiophenol (PNTP) to 4,4′-dimercapto-azobenzene (DMAB) conversion monitored by SERS. UV-Vis spectroscopy showed LSPR peaks of ANSs between Au and Ag NPs, confirming effective alloying. Kinetic studies revealed that ANSs exhibited reaction rates 250–351 times higher than those of Au NPs and 5–10 times higher than those of Ag NPs. This resulted from the synergistic catalysis of Au-Ag and enhanced electromagnetic fields. ANSs demonstrated dual functionality as SERS substrates and photocatalysts, providing a foundation for developing multifunctional nanocatalytic materials. Full article

In a previous article, an estimation procedure for calculating the liquidus and solidus lines of binary equilibrium phase diagrams was presented. In this article, keeping the thermodynamic basics, the estimation method for the approximate calculation of the liquidus and solidus surfaces of ternary phase diagrams was further developed. It is shown that the procedure has a hierarchical structure, and the ternary functions contain the binary functions. The applicability of the method is checked by calculating the liquidus and solidus surfaces of the Ag-Au-Pd isomorphous ternary equilibrium phase diagram. The application of each level of the developed four-level procedure depends on the data available and the aim. It is shown that in the case of a concentration range close to the base alloy pure element, the liquidus and solidus surfaces of the ternary equilibrium phase diagram can be calculated from the liquidus and solidus functions of the binary equilibrium phase diagrams with a few K errors, which is 0.2 at% at 10 K/at% slope. The equilibrium phase diagrams were available in graphical form, so the data obtained via digitalisation of the diagrams for the calculations was used. The functions describe the slope of the surfaces, and the approximate method developed for the calculation of the partition ratios is also shown. Full article

Previous investigations devoted to non-spherical nanoparticles for biosensing have primarily addressed two hot topics, namely, finding nanoparticles with the best shape for refractive index sensing properties and the optimization of size parameters. In this study, based on these hot topics, Au-Ag alloy nanoparticles with excellent optical properties were selected as the research object. Targeting rotationally symmetric Au-Ag alloy nanoparticles for biosensing applications, the complex media function correction model and T-matrix approach were used to systematically analyze the variation patterns of extinction properties, refractive index sensitivity, full width at half maximum, and figure of merit of three rotationally symmetric Au-Ag alloy nanoparticles with respect to the size of the particles and the Au molar fraction. In addition, we optimized the figure of merit to obtain the best size parameters and Au molar fractions for the three rotationally symmetric Au-Ag alloy nanoparticles. Finally, the range of dimensional parameters corresponding to a figure of merit greater than 98% of its maximum value was calculated. The results show that the optimized Au-Ag alloy nanorods exhibit a refractive index sensitivity of 395.2 nm/RIU, a figure of merit of 7.16, and a wide range of size parameters. Therefore, the optimized Au-Ag alloy nanorods can be used as high-performance biosensors. Furthermore, this study provides theoretical guidance for the application and preparation of rotationally symmetric Au-Ag alloy nanoparticles in biosensing. Full article

The widespread implementation of next-generation Li metal anodes is limited, in part, due to the formation of dendritic and/or mossy electrodeposits during cycling. These morphologies can lead to battery failure due to the formation of short circuits and significant volumetric expansion at the anode. One strategy to control the electrodeposition of Li metal is to use lithiophilic materials at the anode. Here, we evaluate the impact of Ag and Au on the early stages of Li metal electrodeposition and cycling. The alloying substrates decrease the voltage for Li reduction and improve Li wetting/adhesion. We probe volumetric expansion directly through dilatometry measurements and find that the degree of volumetric expansion is less when lithium is cycled on an alloying substrate compared to a non-alloying substrate (Cu). Dilatometry experiments reveal that Au has the least amount of volumetric expansion and coin cell cycling experiments indicate that Ag yields more stable cycling compared to Au or Cu. The evaluation of in situ cross-sectional images of cycled coin cells shows that Ag has the lowest volumetric expansion in a coin cell format. Full article

Food contaminants, including harmful microbes, pesticide residues, heavy metals and illegal additives, pose significant public health risks. While traditional detection methods are effective, they are often slow and require complex equipment, which limits their application in real-time monitoring and rapid response. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technology has gained widespread use in related research due to its hypersensitivity, non-destructibility and molecular fingerprinting capabilities. In recent years, Au-Ag bimetallic nanoparticles (Au-Ag BNPs) have emerged as novel SERS substrates, accelerating advancements in SERS detection technology. Au-Ag BNPs can be classified into Au-Ag alloys, Au-Ag core–shells and Au-Ag aggregates, among which the Au-Ag core–shell structure is more widely applied. This review discusses the types, synthesis methods and practical applications of Au-Ag BNPs in food contaminants. The study aims to provide valuable insights into the development of new Au-Ag BNPs and their effective use in detecting common food contaminants. Additionally, this paper explores the challenges and future prospects of SERS technology based on Au-Ag BNPs for pollutant detection, including the development of functional integrated substrates, advancements in intelligent algorithms and the creation of portable on-site detection platforms. These innovations are designed to streamline the detection process and offer guidance in selecting optimal sensing methods for the on-site detection of specific pollutants. Full article
