Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Rapid urbanization, climate variability, and increasing environmental pressures are reshaping the hydrological dynamics of cities worldwide. Extreme events such as pluvial and fluvial flooding, prolonged droughts, and water quality deterioration are posing significant threats to urban communities, critical infrastructure, and ecosystems. These challenges highlight the urgent need to strengthen urban hydrological resilience through innovations in hazard mitigation and adaptive water management.

This Special Issue will provide a platform for cutting-edge research, novel methodologies, and interdisciplinary approaches that address both the scientific and the practical dimensions of urban hydrology under stress. We particularly welcome contributions that explore the following:

  • Innovative tools for modeling and predicting hydrological extremes;
  • Smart sensing, digital twins, and data-driven management for real-time decision support;
  • Nature-based and hybrid solutions that integrate ecological and engineered systems;
  • Resilient infrastructure design and planning frameworks for multi-hazard contexts.

By bridging theory, technology, and practice, this Special Issue will advance our collective understanding of how urban systems can better absorb, adapt to, and recover from hydrological hazards. Ultimately, it will support the co-creation of sustainable, inclusive, and water-sensitive cities that are resilient to present and future challenges.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Water is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
