Sustainable Building Design and Energy Efficiency
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The building sector plays a pivotal role in the pursuit of sustainability, as it is closely linked to energy consumption, carbon emissions, and human well-being. Improving building design and energy efficiency is not only an engineering challenge but also a societal responsibility. With rapid urbanization, climate change, and growing demands for resilient living environments, sustainable building strategies have become essential to reducing environmental impacts, protecting resources, and ensuring long-term quality of life.
This Special Issue aims to bring together recent advances, innovative approaches, and case studies that address sustainable building design and energy efficiency. It seeks to explore how design strategies, advanced materials, smart technologies, and integrated planning can help reduce carbon footprints while simultaneously improving thermal comfort, indoor environmental quality, and the resilience of buildings. By bridging knowledge across architecture, engineering, environmental science, and urban planning, the collection will provide a valuable reference for both researchers and practitioners.
We welcome original research articles and reviews that contribute to this topic. Possible areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the following themes:
- Low-carbon and energy-efficient building design;
 - Building energy performance evaluation and optimization;
 - Integration of renewable energy into buildings;
 - Microgrids and resilient energy supply systems;
 - Innovative materials and construction technologies;
 - Building information modeling (BIM) for sustainability;
 - Thermal comfort, indoor environment, and occupant well-being;
 - Smart building systems and digital technologies;
 - Policy, strategies, and willingness-to-pay studies for sustainable building transitions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
