Interests: Our research focuses on the design and development of new coinage metal-containing organic materials with interesting structural and optoelectronic properties. The research manifests sustainability in all its aspects, from the material composition to the methods and targeted applications. The material composition encompasses variation across a spectrum of structural complexity, from small molecules to coordination polymers and metallopolymers; we especially focus on “modern alchemy” based variations whereby we attempt to substitute gold and silver with less expensive copper without significantly compromising the properties needed for a given application. We aspire to establish structure-function correlations to examine the effect of systematic variation in chemical compositions that comprise molecular and/or supramolecular structural moieties upon cross-correlated light-emitting and/or solar energy-harvesting properties that could be harnessed in future devices and environmental sensors. These applications manifest sustainability by different means, including organic and inorganic LEDs for lighting and video display with up to 10-fold energy-saving potential versus conventional sources, large-area photovoltaic solar cell devices that is both renewable and environmentally-friendly, and smart sensors that can both detect and remediate a wide variety of environmental pollutants in air and water. The most recent addition to our research has been directed toward “green chemistry” whereby our group recently started exploring a new direction based on solventless syntheses for a majority of the synthetic research projects. We have started to explore solvent-free transformations (mechanochemical and sublimation) versus the conventional solvent-mediated approach for the synthesis of the new molecular materials we are pursuing
