Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The aim of this Special Issue is to serve as a forum of discussion and emerging research on the interaction between cultural background and education. The term `intercultural education´ refers here to a complex scenario that takes place everywhere in both developing and developed countries, accelerated by globalization and migration processes, and which, in the last decade, has been exacerbated by the digital scenarios in which educational activities takes place.  In the particular context of the European Union, all educational levels are enriched by mobility experiences for students, faculty and staff, experiences that allow the interchange of language, methodology and cultural heritage. In highly populated urban areas, schools and universities live in a global environment thanks to exchange students and visiting professors; hence, it is now common that a given student spend part of their learning cycle in a different continent. For faculty and staff, mobility is a key part of the accreditation and promotion mechanisms and an indispensable precondition for research outcomes. This context is not free of significant challenges, such as the role of the English language, the growing importance of digital technology, and the impact of subsequent crisis such as the pandemic or even the recent armed conflicts, challenges that also emerge as research questions. Additionally, it is essential to explore the role of public policies including mobility programs, academic recognition processes, linguistic support, scholarships, and promotion of socio-cultural initiatives, in addition to the relationship of the educational community with its immediate social environment.

The Guest Editors welcome both quantitative and qualitative research outputs along with theoretical discussion around the proposed categories. Fresh educational experiences and cases from educators and administrative staff involved in these scenarios are also welcomed.
