Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Smart city realization involves the enhancement of the reliability, efficiency, and scalability of a wide range services, such as healthcare, transportation, architecture, and infrastructure development. Many of these mutually support each other, as in the case of smart ambulances that take a central role in effective emergency response, where vital information like the fastest routing and access to patients’ critical information can be made readily available to paramedics.

In addition to emergency management, telehealth serves multiple purposes in the context of smart city, which ranges from general health assessment to chronic disease management for patients of all ages. Big data analytics and environmental sensing networks for early outbreak detection and effective disease-spread simulation analysis to enable health resource management in infectious disease control are all examples of integrated healthcare for smart cities. The health and medical technologies of existing solutions are being utilized in innovative and unconventional ways, where various aspects of healthcare are being deployed to provide novel health service platforms in smart cities across the world.

In order to provide timely information regarding inter-disciplinary research in optimizing healthcare services in a smart city environment, this Special Issue invites original research articles in, but not limited to, the following areas:

  • Reliability, efficiency, and scalability of the telehealth infrastructure
  • IoT/sensing networks for health services
  • Smart and assistive care
  • Architecture, platforms, and protocols for smart healthcare
  • Consumer healthcare and medical devices for smart city integration
  • Social networking and its impact on health support
