Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Religions has decided to dedicate a special issue to theme of Islam and China broadly defined and invited me to serve as its guest editor. It is a special moment for our growing community of scholars working on the many aspects of this theme for the past 2 decades. A fantastic opportunity to present the many directions the topic has taken since the late 1990s and a chance to set a research agenda for the future. The special issue wishes to build on the research that has been undertaken in recent years. Expanding on the many works I have presented in a lengthy review assay “Chinese Islam: A Complete Concert” (Cross-Currents: East Asian History and Culture Review no. 23 June 2017). Broadly defined in terms of period and space, this special issue will focus on China’s exchanges (with emphasis on religion) with Islamic world in the past and today, histories of Islam and Muslims in China, Chinese Islamic thought, China’s place in Islamic thought, Islamic Law and society in China, and social and cultural aspects of Religious Islamic life in China (including food, art, and architecture), and geographies of Chinese Islam.
