Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The immunometabolic framework provides a novel perspective for understanding immune regulation through cell-intrinsic metabolic fluxes and metabolites in the context of infections, tumors, and inflammatory disorders. Pathogens frequently exploit host energy metabolism, primarily by modulating glucose uptake, catabolism, and gluconeogenesis to maintain lipid metabolism via key pathways including glycolysis, the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, mitochondrial respiration, and the pentose phosphate pathway.
Notably, numerous biosynthetic pathways, such as those involved in cholesterol, ceramide, sphingolipid, and fatty acid metabolism, are altered, highlighting the critical role of metabolic reprogramming in the molecular pathogenesis of infectious diseases. Investigating these intracellular metabolic shifts offers valuable mechanistic insights into disease progression, thereby facilitating the discovery of innovative therapeutic strategies and drug development opportunities.
In light of these advancements, this Special Issue invites contributions from researchers in the field, encompassing, but not limited to, the following areas:
- Dynamic changes and functional implications of cellular metabolism in infectious diseases.
- Novel mechanisms underlying disease onset and progression, as revealed by metabolic studies.
- Emerging concepts and therapeutic approaches that are grounded in immunometabolic research.
- Metabolism, immunity, and new compounds.
- Metabolites, immunology, and drug therapy.
We encourage submissions that explore these themes to further elucidate the intricate interplay between metabolism and infection, ultimately paving the way for groundbreaking interventions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Metabolites is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
