Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

When it comes to infrastructure, critical structures require attention because they are susceptible to damage such as cracks or corrosion. Monitoring applications have proliferated since the condition assessment of infrastructure is required to be periodic. As such, real-time monitoring emerged, making structural integrity continuous. Toward that end, wireless devices are employed in particular infrastructural constructions in order to provide automation to the monitoring processes and minimize human intervention. The main reason behind this is the associated cost of human assessment, as well as the added benefit of continuous automated monitoring as opposed to periodic human condition testing.

Wireless technologies, ranging from Zigbee to 5G telecommunications, can be applied to infrastructure monitoring. This gives a plethora of wireless communication choices, which can be distinguished according to the application environment. In this Special Issue, we welcome research works that reside at the intersection of infrastructural applications with wireless communications, in order to enhance performance, minimize cost and provide energy efficiency, among other properties. Particular importance is given to the newly released standards in telecommunications as well as traditional wireless communication media that have been proven successful in structural monitoring. Moreover, edge computing is of the utmost importance, and machine learning is prevailing in recent wireless communications. In this Special Issue, we welcome contributions addressing topics including, but not limited to:

  • Wireless structural health monitoring;
  • Wireless communications in infrastructures;
  • Telecommunications in structural integrity management;
  • 4G, 5G in infrastructures;
  • Zigbee, Wi-Fi, LoRa for infrastructural monitoring;
  • Quality of Service in wireless monitoring of infrastructures;
  • Energy efficiency in wireless infrastructure applications;
  • Applications and user experiences of wireless communication infrastructure applications;
  • Machine learning in infrastructure wireless communications;
  • Edge computing in infrastructure wireless communications;
  • Cross-layer techniques for wireless communications;
  • Public and private networks in infrastructure monitoring.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Infrastructures is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1800 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
