Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Social media platforms have revolutionized global communication, reshaping how individuals interact, express opinions, and exchange information. Every day, billions of users across platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Reddit, LinkedIn, and Sina Weibo produce immense and varied streams of multimodal data. This unprecedented volume and variety of data create unparalleled opportunities to develop sophisticated analytical methods, innovative algorithms, and impactful applications that yield insights into human behavior, communication dynamics, and societal trends.

To leverage these opportunities, this Special Issue invites papers presenting new discoveries, theoretical frameworks, practical solutions, analytical findings, novel applications, and use cases derived from mining and analyzing social media big data. Contributions are particularly encouraged from diverse domains, including public health, data science, education, marketing, politics, entertainment, and crisis management. Interdisciplinary perspectives, theoretical advancements, practical case studies, and comprehensive reviews are especially welcome.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Innovative algorithms for social media text, image, audio, and video mining;
  • Sentiment analysis, emotion recognition, and behavioral analytics;
  • Identification and tracking of misinformation, fake news, spam, and toxicity;
  • Topic modeling, classification, clustering, and categorization techniques;
  • Network analysis, community detection, and influence modeling;
  • Real-time event detection, prediction, and trend analysis;
  • Ethical considerations, privacy-preserving techniques, and fairness in data mining;
  • Benchmark datasets, reproducibility standards, and evaluation methodologies;
  • Interdisciplinary applications in public policy, healthcare, economics, and communication.

Authors are invited to contribute their original and unpublished works. Both research and review papers are welcome. Research papers presenting preliminary and proof-of-concept results are also welcome. Authors may also submit extended versions of their conference papers. However, authors of such papers should make significant improvements/extensions to their conference papers, and the details of these improvements/extensions should be clearly outlined in the cover letter accompanying the paper submission.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Information is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1800 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
