Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Antenatal alcohol use leads to adverse pregnancy, birth, and child outcomes, including miscarriage, stillbirth, preterm birth, a low birth weight, sudden infant death syndrome, and the development of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). The FASD rate is among the highest in South Africa, followed by the Eastern European regions, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand. However, underserved pregnant people in the United States have also indicated a rate of prenatal alcohol use comparable to that in a region of South Africa. Postpartum alcohol use is also a concern, given recent evidence of independent adverse effects on infant neurocognitive and physical development being caused by breastfeeding while using alcohol. This is concerning, given the fact that many return to drinking post-partum after abstaining from alcohol use during pregnancy. Contextual issues surrounding prenatal alcohol use should also be noted, including other substance use and tobacco use, intimate partner violence, sexual health issues, trauma exposure, and maternal depression. This Special Issue will focus on research on prenatal alcohol use, using both epidemiological and intervention-based approaches. Potential contributions should consider multi-faceted aspects of prenatal alcohol use.
