Dear Colleagues,
Ornamental plants enrich human environments—from parks and gardens to green roofs, balconies, and urban landscapes. Their diversity encompasses not only wild relatives and landraces, but countless cultivars and heritage varieties selected over centuries for their aesthetic, morphological, and functional traits. This diversity, however, is threatened by habitat loss, climate change, and shifting land uses, making conservation efforts urgent. Conservation can take multiple forms: ex situ collections in botanic gardens and gene banks, in situ protection of wild populations, and maintenance of living collections in historical or contemporary landscapes.
Restoration, in turn, may involve the re-introduction of heritage plants to preserve cultural authenticity (historical restoration) or the integration of ornamentals into rewilded meadows, pollinator-friendly strips, or climate-adaptive plantings (ecological restoration). Beyond restoration, this Special Issue also welcomes research on broader aspects of ornamental plant science, including but not limited to:
- Landscape design and aesthetic functionality.
- Genotype evaluation for ornamental traits (e.g., flower color, phenology, shape, longevity).
- Performance under biotic and abiotic stressors (drought, salinity, pests, diseases).
- Propagation, micropropagation, and breeding for improved ornamental value.
- Morpho-anatomical, physiological, or genetic characterization of ornamental taxa.
- Artificial intelligence, machine learning, and digital tools applied to ornamental plant phenotyping, identification, monitoring, and conservation.
By bridging fundamental and applied perspectives, this Special Issue aims to showcase global scientific work on the diversity, conservation, and restoration of ornamental plants. We invite original research articles, reviews, and case studies that advance knowledge in these interconnected fields.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Horticulturae is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
