Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue, titled “Dietary Patterns and Sustainability: Food Systems Perspective for Healthier Diets”, aims to examine the complex relationships between food consumption behaviours, nutritional quality, and environmental sustainability. This interdisciplinary research field integrates nutritional epidemiology, food systems science, and public health to evaluate how dietary patterns influence human health outcomes while simultaneously affecting natural resources, climate change, and biodiversity. Research in this area focuses on identifying sustainable dietary models that optimize nutrient adequacy, reduce the environmental footprint of food production, and promote long-term population health. Key topics include plant-based and traditional dietary patterns, ultra-processed food consumption, food security, life cycle assessment of foods, and behavioural determinants of sustainable eating. By combining nutritional science with sustainability metrics, this discipline supports evidence-based strategies to guide food policy, improve dietary guidelines, and foster resilient food systems. Ultimately, the goal is to develop integrated solutions that address the dual challenges of malnutrition and environmental degradation, contributing to healthier populations and more sustainable global food systems.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Foods is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
