Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The last few decades have witnessed the rapid development of networked control systems due to their significant advantages, and they have been applied to variant industrial areas, such as unmanned surface vehicles, unmanned space vehicles, smart grids, wastewater treatment processes, Internet-based teleoperation, intelligent transportation systems, and so on. However, time-delays are ubiquitous in networked control systems due to limited network bandwidth, and possibly degrade the closed-loop system performance. The time-delay system approach has been powerful in investigating effects of time-delays on networked control systems, which is evidenced by several facts, such as, i) a networked control system subject to network-induced delays and packet dropouts can be modelled as a time-delay system; ii) an event-triggered control system can be modelled as a time-delay system; and iii) some problems in distributed control systems or multi-agent systems can be transformed into an asymptotic stability problem of time-delay systems. Thus, time-delay systems have been more and more important in modern industrial applications in network environment. On the other hand, the study of time-delay systems has been very active. Since 2001, a descriptor model transformation method, a free-weighting matrix method and an integral inequality approach have been proposed. More specifically, the Bessel-Legendre inequality, which was proposed originally in 2015, has been attractive and a large number of results on the stability of time-delay systems have been reported in the literature.

The purpose of this Special Issue is to advance the time-delay system method and further promote the research activities in estimation and control for networked (distributed) control systems, including sensor networks, complex networks and neural networks. The Special Issue is targeted at original works to address some emerging issues and challenges from time-delays systems and networked (distributed) control systems and their applications to areas, such as power systems, smart grids, robotics, etc.

The list of possible topics includes, but is not limited to:

  • Delay effects on vibration control systems, e.g., offshore platforms, etc.
  • Estimation and control of time-delay systems
  • Global asymptotic stability analysis and state estimation of delayed neural networks
  • Event-triggered control and estimation of (distributed) networked control systems
  • Consensus and cooperative control of multi-agent systems subject to time-delays
  • Applications of time-delay system approaches in smart grid, wireless robotics, repetitive control, some other industrial control systems, etc.

This paper addresses the problem of motion prediction and tracking control for cloud robotic systems with time-varying delays in measurements. A novel method using an observer-based structure for position and velocity prediction is developed to estimate the real-time information of robot manipulator. The prediction error can converge to zero even if model uncertainties exist in the robot manipulator. Based on the predicted positions and velocities, some sufficient conditions are derived to design suitable tracking controllers such that semi-globally uniformly ultimately bounded tracking performance of the predictor–controller couple can be guaranteed. Finally, the effectiveness and robustness to model uncertainties of the proposed method are verified by a two degree-of-freedom (DOF) robot system. Full article

Potential performance improvements can be obtained by introducing communication techniques in the power electronic systems. However, network-induced time-delay could bring negative consequences of degrading performance or destabilizing the system in many cases. To investigate and handle the impacts of time-delay, a suit of analytical methodology is proposed, where both delay-insensitive and delay-sensitive control strategies of network-based system have their theoretical methods and different problem-solving paths. The former is to predict the maximum allowable boundaries of time-delay for releasing more network resources, and the latter is to use the controller-altering method for changing its original instability, respectively. The proposed methodology is concretely applied in network-based system of droop-controlled AC (Alternating Current) microgrid in islanded mode. Two different current-sharing strategies are mathematically analyzed and given to verify their validity. Experimental results also show the effectiveness of the proposed methodology in droop-controlled AC microgrid system, which provides theoretical guidance on how to use network-based control for the other power electronic systems. In this paper, exponential synchronization for inertial neural networks with time delays is investigated. First, by introducing a directive Lyapunov functional, a sufficient condition is derived to ascertain the global exponential synchronization of the drive and response systems based on feedback control. Second, by introducing a variable substitution, the second-order differential equation is transformed into a first-order differential equation. As such, a new Lyapunov functional is constructed to formulate a novel global exponential synchronization for the systems under study. The two obtained sufficient conditions complement each other and are suitable to be applied in different cases. Finally, two numerical examples are given to illustrated the effectiveness of the proposed theoretical results. Full article

A power grid harmonic signal is characterized as having both nonlinear and nonstationary features. A novel multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis (MFDFA) algorithm combined with the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) theory and template movement is proposed to overcome some shortcomings in the traditional MFDFA algorithm. The novel algorithm is used to study the multifractal feature of harmonic signals at different frequencies. Firstly, the signal is decomposed and the characteristics of wavelet transform multiresolution analysis are employed to obtain the components at different frequency bands. After this, the local fractal characteristic of the components is studied by utilizing the novel MFDFA algorithm. The experimental results show that the harmonic signals exhibit obvious multifractal characteristics and that the multifractal intensity is related to the signal frequency. Compared with the traditional MFDFA algorithm, the proposed method is more stable in curve fitting and can extract the multifractal features more accurately. Full article

In this paper, the problem of stochastic finite-time stabilization is investigated for stochastic delay interval systems. A nonlinear state feedback controller with input-to-state delay is introduced. By employing the Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional method, some sufficient conditions on stochastic finite-time stabilization are derived for closed-loop stochastic delay interval systems using the I t o ^ ’s differential formula. Suitable nonlinear state feedback controllers can be designed in terms of linear matrix inequalities. The obtained results are finally applied to an energy-storing electrical circuit to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Full article

The paper investigates H consensus problem of heterogeneous multi-agent systems including agents with first- and second-order integrators in the presence of disturbance and communication time delays under Markov switching topologies. Based on current messages, outdated information stored in memory and communication time delay information from neighbors, a more general kind of distributed consensus algorithm is proposed, which is faster consensus convergence. By applying stochastic stability analysis, model transformation techniques and graph theory, sufficient conditions of mean square consensus and H consensus are obtained, respectively. Finally, simulation examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of obtained theoretical results. Full article

This paper studies the problem of distributed containment control for multi-agent systems with high-order dynamics and input delays. Two event-triggered control algorithms are proposed for multi-agent systems without and with input delay, respectively. The communication instants between two linked followers are determined by the event-triggering condition, and every follower can detect the event based on its own control input. For the followers, edge-based estimators are adopted to predict state differences to neighbors. Control inputs of the followers are calculated based on the predicted values of the state differences. To deal with the input delay, a delay comprehension approach is developed. It is proved that for arbitrarily large but bounded input delays, the followers can move into the convex hull spanned by the leaders asymptotically. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms. Full article

Considering that a majority of the traditional one-dimensional discrete chaotic maps have disadvantages including a relatively narrow chaotic range, smaller Lyapunov exponents, and excessive periodic windows, a new nonlinearly modulated Logistic map with delay model (NMLD) is proposed. Accordingly, a chaotic map called a first-order Feigenbaum-Logistic NMLD (FL-NMLD) is proposed. Simulation results demonstrate that FL-NMLD has a considerably wider chaotic range, larger Lyapunov exponents, and superior ergodicity compared with existing chaotic maps. Based on FL-NMLD, we propose a new image encryption algorithm that joins the pixel plane and bit-plane shuffle (JPB). The simulation and test results confirm that JPB has higher security than simple pixel-plane encryption and is faster than simple bit-plane encryption. Moreover, it can resist the majority of attacks including statistical and differential attacks. Full article

This paper is concerned with the stability of linear systems under time-varying sampling. First, the closed-loop sampled-data system under study is represented by a discrete-time system using a non-standard discretization method. Second, by introducing a new sampled-date-based integral inequality, the sufficient condition on stability is formulated by using a simple Lyapunov function. The stability criterion has lower computational complexity, while having less conservatism compared with those obtained by a classical input delay approach. Third, when the system is subject to parameter uncertainties, a robust stability criterion is derived for uncertain systems under time-varying sampling. Finally, three examples are given to show the effectiveness of the proposed method. Full article

This paper is concerned with a novel event-triggered sliding mode variable structure control (ESMC) scheme to achieve robust stabilization of memristive systems (MSs). First, a memory-based sliding surface, including the past and the current information of the system states, is introduced. Two switching gain matrices of such kinds of switching surfaces, which satisfy the guaranteed cost performance of the sliding reduced order dynamics, are achieved by employing linear matrix inequality techniques. Second, a sliding mode controller using an event-triggered mechanism is constructed to ensure that the trajectories of the uncertain MS slide towards the proposed memory-based switching hyperplane, and thus, the stabilization of entire MSs is reached. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed results is demonstrated through simulations. Full article

In this paper, a general event-triggered framework is constructed to investigate the problem of remote fault detection for stochastic cyber-physical systems subject to the additive disturbances, sensor nonlinearities and deception attacks. Both fault-detection residual generation and evaluation module are fully described. Two energy norm indices are presented so that the fault-detection residual has the best sensitivity to faults and the best robustness to unwanted factors including additive disturbances and false information injected by attacker. Moreover, the filter gain and residual weighting matrix are formulated in terms of stochastic Lyapunov function, which can be conveniently solved via standard numerical software. Finally, an application example is presented to verify the performance of fault detection by comparative simulations. The prolonged battery life is experimentally evaluated and analyzed via a wireless node platform. Full article
