Smart Manufacturing System Design

Designs is a peer-reviewed, open access journal which provides a unifying research framework for a wide range of engineering disciplines and industrial applications, including smart manufacturing system design.

Manufacturing plays a crucial role in the positive development and prosperity of companies, economies, and countries but also has strong impact on social and environmental dimensions. In addition to others, digitalization (often linked to terms such as smart manufacturing, Industry 4.0, or Industrial Internet of things) is a major change driver with many associated technologies, methods, and tools. For manufacturing systems, with all its different levels of consideration, this leads to diverse new design-related questions and opportunities but also challenges which should be addressed in this section. This includes aspects such as:

• Innovative manufacturing process/machine, manufacturing system, factory, and supply chain concepts;
• Smart manufacturing solutions and related digitalization architectures;
• Production-related digital twin or cyber physical system approaches;
• Improved approaches for production planning and control;
• Human factors in manufacturing;
• Design for manufacturing and assembly.
