Periodontal and Peri-Implant Health in Implant Dentistry: Integration of Treatment and Maintenance
This special issue belongs to the section “Oral Hygiene, Periodontology and Peri-implant Diseases“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Dental implants no longer pose a difficult treatment option, offering an almost 99% success rate during initial osteointegration. However, longer follow-up results show the decline in success rates over time due to the development of early crestal bone loss and peri-implantitis. It is well known that soft peri-implant tissues are responsible for the protection of implant-to-bone contact; therefore, the development, maintenance, and, in the case of disease, treatment of the peri-implant seal is key to implant function longevity. Various factors that influence peri-implant health are broadly discussed in the literature. They include implant–abutment connection stability, implant placement depth, initial soft tissue thickness, prosthetic material type and surface treatment, patient hygienic skills, and many more. It is important to understand that good maintenance of peri-implant health is not possible if the development of hard and soft peri-implant tissues was flawed.
Therefore, this Special Issue of the Dentistry Journal focuses on integrating key peri-implant health components, such as the development of protective mechanisms, maintenance of peri-implant tissues, and treatment of peri-implant diseases.
Authors conducting any clinical or basic research on the topics described above are encouraged to submit their work to this Special Issue. Original studies, reviews, and other research papers are welcome.
