Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
We warmly invite you to submit your recent work in the field of novel design, modification, and coating of functional surfaces inspired by nature to the Special Issue “Bioinspired Surfaces Modification and Coatings”.
Nature is the greatest source of inspiration for the creation of functional surfaces and materials. Through evolution, nature has produced the most efficient multifunctional surface structures, which are the active interfaces between subjects and the environment, with certain intelligent funtionality. Bioinspiration is an approach to improve our lives and solve our problems based on imitating nature to identify new ways of making and modifying materials. Biologically inspired surface modifications and coatings have been widely investigated, such as the self-cleaning surfaces inspired by Lotus leaves, antimicroibal surfaces inspired by natural Cicada wing surface topography, adhesive surfaces inspired by the feet of geckos, and a reducing water drag and biofouling surface inspired by fish skin, etc. These artificial bioinspired functional surfaces can deliver extraordinary hydrophobicity, antimicroibal, antibiofouling, thermal regulation, and other advanced functions. With the development of nanoscience and nanotechnology since the early 2000s, the field of bioinspired surface modification and coating has provided a significant impetus in mimicking nature surfaces using nanofabrication techniques for many disciplines. In the last few decades, these bioinspired superior functional surfaces have generated significant interest and helped to deliver advanced products.
This Special Issue calls for contributions from researchers worldwide from all the relevant fields and their interfaces with an understanding of the latest discoveries on functional surfaces in nature and the developments of materials inspired by the amazing natural surfaces. We are looking for original experimental/theoretical research and reviews. The topics combining the functional surfaces with other properties of a material/device are also welcome.
In particular, the topics of interest of this Special Issue include, but are not limited to:
- Bioinspired antimicroibal surface modification and coating;
- Bioinspired Antibiofouling surface modification and coating;
- Bioinspired hydrophobic and self-cleaning surface modification and coating;
- Bioinspired stimuli-responsiveness surface modification and coating;
- Nanofabrication of bioinspired surface and coating;
- Biofabrication of bioinspired surface and coating.
We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
