Laser-Based Techniques for Coating Deposition and Surface Modification

This special issue belongs to the section “Laser Coatings“.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Laser-based technologies have become indispensable tools for the precise fabrication and modification of surface coatings. Their unique advantages—such as localized energy delivery, rapid processing, and exceptional control over microstructure—enable the creation of coatings with superior mechanical, thermal, and functional properties. These techniques have shown great promise in a wide range of applications, from wear- and corrosion-resistant coatings to functional surfaces with tailored optical, electrical, or catalytic characteristics.

This Special Issue, “Laser-Based Techniques for Coating Deposition and Surface Modification”, aims to provide a comprehensive overview of recent progress in the use of laser technologies for coating development. We welcome studies that explore laser cladding, laser alloying, laser-induced/enhanced deposition, laser ablation, laser shock peening, laser texturing, and other advanced processes for surface engineering.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Laser cladding and laser melting for protective and functional coatings;
  • Laser surface texturing and patterning for wettability, adhesion, or tribological control;
  • Microstructural design and property enhancement via laser-based treatments;
  • Laser-assisted deposition, alloying, and composite formation;
  • Laser-induced/enhanced electrodeposition on metal or nonmetal materials;
  • Hybrid laser processes and their integration with additive manufacturing;
  • Modeling, simulation, and in situ diagnostics of laser–material interactions.

We invite original research articles, reviews, and short communications that advance the understanding and application of laser-based coating technologies for modern materials engineering.

We look forward to your valuable contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
