Computed Tomography for Oral and Maxillofacial Applications

This special issue belongs to the section “Biomedical Engineering and Biomaterials“.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

"Computed Tomography for Oral and Maxillofacial Applications" is a specialized field in medical imaging that harnesses computed tomography (CT) for the assessment and diagnosis of conditions within the oral, dental, and maxillofacial regions. These regions encompass the mouth, jaws, face, and neck and are critical in dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and radiology. CT imaging provides highly detailed cross-sectional images, aiding in the diagnosis and treatment of dental diseases, craniofacial issues, trauma, and various pathological conditions.

Recent advances in low-dose CT, powered by AI technology, have made a significant impact on this field. AI algorithms reduce radiation exposure while maintaining image quality, addressing radiation concerns in oral and maxillofacial applications. This technology is particularly beneficial in maxillofacial surgery, where it enhances preoperative planning and surgical precision while minimizing radiation exposure, promising safer and more precise procedures.

Furthermore, CT technology, with its capability for detailed 3D imaging, is instrumental in the diagnosis and planning of full mouth rehabilitation. It offers a comprehensive view of the oral and maxillofacial structures, making it invaluable in cases where extensive dental work or rehabilitation is needed. By providing precise anatomical information, it aids in determining the best approach for rehabilitation, ensuring optimal outcomes.

This Bioengineering Special Issue is dedicated to the latest research and innovations in AI-assisted low-dose CT for maxillofacial surgery, including applications in full mouth rehabilitation. Researchers are encouraged to contribute to this evolving field, offering insights that have the potential to revolutionize diagnostics, surgical practices, and comprehensive oral rehabilitation, ultimately ensuring the best possible patient care and outcomes.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Bioengineering is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
