Transformative Approaches in Musculoskeletal Tissue Regeneration: From Bench to Bedside

This special issue belongs to the section “Regenerative Engineering“.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue aims to showcase the latest breakthroughs in innovative therapeutic strategies for musculoskeletal tissue regeneration, particularly in the context of complex challenges such as chronic bone loss disorders. The human musculoskeletal system not only provides essential structural and mechanical support but also safeguards our vital organs. However, as our population ages, musculoskeletal disorders are becoming increasingly common, leading to significant health implications and mounting medical and socioeconomic burdens.

Age-related chronic degenerative diseases present formidable clinical challenges in managing musculoskeletal injuries. Traditional treatments, such as autografts and allografts, are often limited by issues of availability, disease transmission, and inconsistent outcomes. In contrast, the field of tissue engineering, harnessing the potential of stem cells, inductive factors, and advanced biomaterials, offers a promising pathway to restore both the structure and function of musculoskeletal tissues.

Recent decades have seen rapid advancements in our understanding of stem cell biology, biomaterial development, and the integration of multidisciplinary approaches. These innovations have paved the way for exciting new methodologies in tissue regeneration.

We invite original research articles and comprehensive reviews for this Special Issue, “Transformative Approaches in Musculoskeletal Tissue Regeneration: From Bench to Bedside”, focusing on groundbreaking therapeutic approaches for tissue repair and regeneration.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Unraveling novel molecular mechanisms governing mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) lineage commitment;
  • Development of cutting-edge biomaterials for efficient delivery of cells, genes, drugs, and growth factors;
  • Creation of innovative animal disease models for robust pre-clinical evaluations;
  • Advanced applications of MSC-mediated therapies;
  • Exploration of cell-free strategies, such as MSC-derived exosomes, for enhanced tissue regeneration;
  • New therapeutic approaches targeting tissue repair in chronic degenerative conditions;
  • Translational strategies aimed at bridging laboratory innovations with clinical applications.

Join us in exploring the forefront of musculoskeletal tissue regeneration research, where novel therapies hold the promise to transform patient outcomes.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Bioengineering is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
