Measurement and Analysis of Mercury in the Environment

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue of Atmosphere, entitled Atmospheric Mercury Monitoring and Analysis, is devoted to all aspects of atmospheric mercury science, including, but not limited to, instrumental advances; natural and anthropogenic source contributions; mercury abatement technology; air–surface fluxes; mercury passive air samplers; atmospheric mercury chemistry; and modeling. The rationale for this Special Issue is to evaluate/predict historical and future trends of mercury concentration with respect to global change and local contamination.

Despite considerable growth in recent years, knowledge concerning the complex mercury biogeochemical cycle still exhibits several aspects that remain relatively poorly understood. To successfully manage mercury pollution and its health impacts, the Minamata Convention on Mercury (MCM) calls for an integration of mercury research and policy by controlling and, where feasible, reducing emissions and releases of Hg to the environment. As part of the MCM, great attention is now focused on how to best monitor its effectiveness at reducing human exposure to mercury. In this context, recent summaries of mercury science and policy have identified many relevant monitoring needs aimed at measuring and comparing mercury levels across and throughout different regions of the world.

The purpose of this Special Issue is to provide an overview of recent advances in technologies, tools, and methods, with a focus on improving air monitoring, increasing environmental awareness, and/or facilitating knowledge-based policymaking. Contributions from observations, field experiments, and chemical-transport modelling, including data science investigations, are all welcome.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
