Resistance Training and Sports Health

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Resistance training has become a fundamental component of sports practice, not only to improve performance but also to promote long-term athlete health. From elite professionals to recreational participants, properly prescribed resistance training offers wide-ranging benefits: improved strength, power, injury prevention, musculoskeletal resilience, metabolic health, and rehabilitation/return-to-play outcomes. This Special Issue aims to explore the multifaceted role of resistance training in sport science and athlete development. Contributions may address experimental designs, longitudinal studies, systematic reviews, meta-analyses and methodological innovations that deepen the understanding of innovative resistance training methodologies, load management strategies, neuromuscular adaptations and the interaction between resistance training and recovery or injury risk. Special attention will be given to studies that integrate technological advances and individualized programming models, as well as the effects of different resistance training strategies on athlete performance and health. Additionally, we welcome interdisciplinary approaches examining how resistance training interfaces with other domains such as sports nutrition, hormonal responses, and youth development. Contributions that address population-specific applications—including in female athletes, older adults, and para-athletes—are especially encouraged. Ultimately, this Special Issue seeks to showcase evidence-based insights into how resistance training can be optimized to support performance, health, and longevity in sport. By bridging science and practice, it provides a platform for advancing our understanding of one of the most powerful tools in athletes’ training.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
