Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Through the development of intelligent digital engineering designs, building information modelling (BIM) facilitates the development of three-dimensional designs of buildings and infrastructure, has the potential to facilitate and optimise the construction process, can aid the management of time and cost, and provides a basis for intelligent facility operation and asset management processes. BIM can also be used in conjunction with other systems-based technologies, such as digital twins and artificial intelligence applications. Using BIM also has the potential to aid construction safety management and environmental sustainability.

At the same time, there are challenges around the use of BIM in civil engineering applications. One of these challenges is the successful management of interoperability between BIM software and other management and construction systems. Other considerations include developing and training users and staff, effective data management, and managing organisation culture.

We are pleased to invite submissions on the use of BIM in civil engineering. While the application of BIM and related systems has significant potential in terms of infrastructure design, development and life cycle management processes, and improving collaboration between project stakeholders, it is also necessary to consider potential issues when implementing BIM. This Special Issue therefore aims to explore both the current and potential uses of BIM in civil engineering applications and to explore the latest developments in this field.

In this Special Issue, original research and reviews are welcome. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. The use of BIM in civil engineering planning, design, construction, whole-life asset management, and facilities management;
  2. Successful applications of BIM in civil engineering applications;
  3. Managing the implementation of BIM and related systems in civil engineering applications;
  4. Further possibilities for the use of BIM in civil engineering applications;
  5. Other potential uses of BIM in civil engineering.

We are looking forward to receiving your submissions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • Reprint: MDPI Books provides the opportunity to republish successful Special Issues in book format, both online and in print.
