Advances in Methanol Production and Utilization
This special issue belongs to the section “Energy Science and Technology“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Alternative and renewable energy sources have an important role to satisfy the increasing energy and chemicals demand, ensuring a lower environmental impact. Among these alternative energy sources, biodiesel, methanol and methane are good examples, that could be obtained from renewable sources.
Methanol is an important primary raw material for the energy and chemical industries, due to its wide applications ranging from energy uses (e.g., as a fuel by itself, or to be blended with gasoline) to chemical uses (e.g., as a solvent, or to be converted to formaldehyde, acetic acid, methyl methacrylate, dimethyl terephthalate, methylamines, chloromethanes, dimethyl carbonate and methyl tertiary butyl ether, dimethyl ether, etc.). It can also be transformed to ethylene and propylene via methanol-to-olefin processes.
Many others methanol utilization routes might be investigated and proposed due to the versatility of this compound. The conventional raw material for methanol production is the syngas, obtained by the steam reforming or partial oxidation of natural gas or by biomass gasification. However, methanol can be produced also by carbon dioxide hydrogenation. Methanol synthesis is a well-consolidated technology, but important improvements concerning new catalysts, new process configurations, new reactors, and new ideas are urgently required.
This Special Issue, entitled “Advances in Methanol Production and Utilization” for the Applied Science, wants to analyze progress in methanol production and utilization. It is my pleasure to invite you to submit original reviews, experimental and modelling researches and case studies related to methanol production and use.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
