Current Developments in Analytical Chemistry of Food and Environment

This special issue belongs to the section “Chemical and Molecular Sciences“.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Analytical chemistry is undergoing rapid transformation driven by the increasing complexity of food matrices, the emergence of new environmental contaminants and the demand for more accurate, rapid and sustainable monitoring approaches. Advances in instrumental technologies, miniaturization and data-driven analysis are reshaping how chemical and biological hazards are detected, quantified and interpreted across food and environmental systems. These developments are also supported by improvements in sample preparation, separation science and sensor innovation, which together enable greater sensitivity, selectivity and real-time applicability than ever before.

The growing presence of trace pollutants, microplastics, residues and emerging contaminants in both food and the environment calls for analytical methodologies capable of addressing multifaceted challenges. At the same time, regulatory demands and societal expectations for food safety, authenticity and environmental protection continue to increase. This motivates the adoption of high-resolution technologies (e.g., chromatography–mass spectrometry, advanced spectroscopic methods), novel biosensing platforms, green analytical tools and chemometric or machine-learning approaches to support reliable decision-making.

The Special Issue welcomes original research articles, reviews and communications covering innovative analytical strategies applied to food and environmental sciences. Contributions may address fundamental advances, methodological improvements, validation studies or application-driven research aimed at enhancing monitoring capacity, sustainability, analytical performance and risk-assessment capabilities.

We look forward to receiving submissions that help advance the future of analytical chemistry at the interface between food and environmental research.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
