Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue serves as a multidisciplinary scientific forum exploring the synergy between advanced computational techniques and intelligent optomechatronic systems. We examine how the convergence of computer vision, artificial intelligence, and metaheuristics is radically transforming the capabilities of these systems across diverse application domains.

In the industrial sector, convolutional neural networks and vision transformers enable complex semantic segmentation and automated inspection tasks in production lines, while 3D reconstruction systems facilitate quality control in additive manufacturing processes. Metaheuristic techniques simultaneously optimize the parameters of these systems, achieving previously unreachable levels of precision.

For the biomedical sector, AI-assisted diagnostic imaging systems are being developed that combine instance segmentation with spectral classification models, enabling early detection of complex pathologies. Medical image processing algorithms are enhanced by specialized deep learning architectures, while metaheuristics optimize diagnostic imaging acquisition protocols.

In the field of robotics and autonomous vehicles, multimodal artificial intelligence integrates computer vision data with information from optical sensors to create robust perception systems. Deep reinforcement learning techniques control complex nonlinear systems, and metaheuristics enable fine-tuning of these controllers in dynamic environments.

Space and astronomy applications benefit from adaptive optics systems enhanced by AI algorithms that are capable of compensating for atmospheric distortions in real-time. Simultaneously, fiber optic sensors and optical metrology systems achieve new levels of precision through advanced digital processing techniques.

We invite the submission of original contributions addressing these topics, with special interest in applications of smart manufacturing, medical technologies, autonomous robotics, space systems, optical sensors, and emerging sustainable technologies. Papers should demonstrate significant advances in the integration of digital image processing, computer vision, and artificial intelligence with optomechatronic systems, prioritizing those contributions that present experimental validation and concrete applications with demonstrable impact in their respective fields of application.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
