Special Issue Information

Transportation is a specific activity in which smart solutions are often applied. The benefits of applying intelligent transportation solutions are felt by all users of the city, region and country, both residents and businesses, authorities, tourists, etc. First of all, traffic fluidity is improved, the comfort of movement is increased, as well as the comfort of living and staying in the city.

In recent years, there have been more and more transportation transformations like Mobility as a Service (MaaS) that are taking place in and within cities in the form of sustainable urban development. While paying attention to human transportation needs, one cannot forget about the transportation needs of businesses that, by virtue of their existence, operate in and within cities, and the tasks they perform significantly affect the functioning of city transportation systems and smart supply chains.

Trucks, carrying out freight flows to/from and within the city, compete with both private and public passenger transportation for limited road infrastructure resources. Smart supply chains are designed to ensure the efficient flow of cars in the city, on the highway and on national roads. They also make it possible to use the existing transportation infrastructure in the most optimal way.

For some time now, thanks to the development of technology, it has become possible to use modern techniques like supply logistics planning using artificial intelligence (AI). They make it possible to collect and analyze large amounts of data like Big Data. Transportation infrastructure development plans aimed at improving transportation should be based on the use of state-of-the-art solutions such as MaaS to facilitate the implementation of the processes of moving people and cargo.

Of great importance in this is the reduction of air and exhaust emissions, thanks to the implementation of low- or zero-emission solutions. The benefits can also include a decrease in noise pollution, reduced travel times, improved road safety and reduced degradation of road infrastructure.

Previous studies especially point to the need to develop transportation networks and logistics facilities like their automation and warehouse management. As a result of the solutions supporting the above-mentioned areas, intelligent transportation is safe for traffic participants and other stakeholder groups in terms of quality and level of movement, while developing in a sustainable manner.

Such a system can be used successfully in the implementation of integrated traffic management, intelligently supporting the management and development of transportation of the future.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • Reprint: MDPI Books provides the opportunity to republish successful Special Issues in book format, both online and in print.
