Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The rising prevalence of diabetes mellitus poses a growing global health challenge, driven by microvascular complications such as retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy, and increased cardiovascular mortality. This underscores the urgent need for innovative research and interventions to alleviate the disease burden on patients and healthcare systems.

Recent advances have deepened our understanding of diabetes pathogenesis, including beta-cell dysfunction, insulin resistance, and metabolic dysregulation. Further, high-throughput omics technologies (genomics, proteomics, metabolomics) have identified key biomarkers and molecular signatures linked to disease progression and complications. These breakthroughs are enabling targeted therapies and personalised medicine approaches, offering promise for improved patient outcomes and reduced global diabetes burden.

This Special Issue aims to publish papers exhibiting cutting-edge research and innovative perspectives on the pathogenesis and progression of, as well as therapeutic strategies for, diabetes mellitus. Topics of interest include but are not limited to the following:

  • Beta-cell dysfunction and regeneration in diabetes;
  • Insulin resistance and metabolic dysregulation in type 2 diabetes;
  • Molecular pathways driving diabetic complications;
  • Emerging therapies, including gene editing, stem cell therapy, and microbiome-based interventions;
  • Personalised medicine approaches leveraging omics technologies and biomarkers.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
