Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Industry 4.0 (I.40) and Industry 5.0 (I5.0) mark new stages in production based on the integration of advanced technologies to achieve more flexible and personalized processes. Beyond optimizing manufacturing, these innovations offer key advantages for occupational health and safety (OHS): they enable the design of safer environments, reduce human exposure to high-risk tasks, and improve ergonomics through automation and the continuous monitoring of parameters such as noise, temperature, and humidity.

Tools such as virtual reality facilitate training in hazardous scenarios without exposing workers to risk, and artificial intelligence and big data enable real-time risk assessment, while digital twins optimize contaminant control and monitor fatigue or work statuses. Cybersecurity also protects against attacks that could compromise robots or machinery, preventing serious accidents.

In particular, artificial intelligence provides safety management with advanced predictive and analytical capabilities that strengthen OHS. By processing data from incident histories to environmental variables in real time, algorithms identify risk patterns before they materialize, prioritize preventive actions, and allocate resources more accurately. Furthermore, AI automates the generation of regulatory compliance reports and customizes training programs based on individual risk profiles, so safety managers can make proactive decisions to safeguard their team's integrity.

Research on OHS and I.40 and I5.0 is still in the exploratory phase, predominantly being confined to conceptual studies in Europe and with limited empirical data. It is vital that organizations review their management systems, strengthen human capital, and promote new digital skills. Therefore, more studies are needed that correlate Industry 4.0 and 5.0 technologies with occupational health and safety, incorporating sustainability and the human factor as central themes.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • Reprint: MDPI Books provides the opportunity to republish successful Special Issues in book format, both online and in print.
