Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
As digital transformation accelerates, achieving sustainability goals requires innovative computing paradigms that leverage big data, IoT, and AI at the edge. The convergence of these technologies is transforming industries by enabling real-time monitoring and analytics, decentralized computing and decision making, and resource-efficient data processing, all of which are critical for environmental, social, and economic sustainability. At present, the synergy between big data, IoT and AI is bringing edge computing and edge intelligence at the forefront of this transformation, allowing computational workloads to be processed closer to the data source. This shift reduces latency, minimizes energy consumption, and enhances the responsiveness of AI-driven systems, making them ideal for sustainable applications in smart cities, green technology, industrial automation, and digital healthcare. Meanwhile, cognitive computing continues to advance decision-making capabilities by integrating machine learning, natural language processing, generative AI, and autonomous systems into large-scale sustainable digital ecosystems.
This Special Issue aims to explore how big data, AI, edge computing and edge intelligence can address pressing sustainability challenges, ensuring secure, ethical, and scalable solutions for future digital infrastructures.
We seek original research and case studies that bridge the gap between high-performance computing, distributed intelligence, and sustainable development. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: big data-driven insights for sustainability and resource optimization; green edge computing architectures for minimizing carbon footprints; AI-powered smart grids and renewable energy optimization; edge intelligence and federated learning for energy-efficient computing; ethical generative AI frameworks for responsible decision making in sustainability; the IoT and edge intelligence for real-time monitoring and analytics; cognitive computing models for predictive analytics in urban and rural sustainability; and secure and privacy-preserving edge computing for sustainable digital ecosystems.
We welcome interdisciplinary contributions that explore novel methodologies, theoretical advancements, and real-world implementations demonstrating the role of Big Data, AI, IoT, and Edge Intelligence in shaping a more sustainable and intelligent digital future ecosystems.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Big Data and Cognitive Computing is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1800 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
