Cover Story: The concept of hopeful optimism is a place-based approach to building young people’s sense of connected belonging. This framework directs political debates away from individualised, economic-centred, future-oriented goals of ‘aspiration’ and towards present-centred celebrations of ‘optimism’. In understanding the different identity domains that make up their lives, young people become empowered to recognise their future selves within the present moment. Hopeful Optimism offers an opportunity to enhance young people’s sense of belonging, equipping them with a sense of possibility and responsibility. This framework is relevant for scholars, educators, community leaders and policymakers alike. In this paper, we establish the theoretical groundwork for this concept and highlight some practical ways in which it can be implemented. View this paper
