1. Introduction
The open access journal Physiologia [1], launched in 2021, is an international, peer-reviewed open access journal aimed at publishing articles demonstrating conceptual advances across the realms of physiology. With a focus upon integrating molecular, cellular, systems and whole organismal function, the field of physiology has very long been recognised as one which advances our understanding of the constructs of life across all species.
Currently, Physiologia is covered by 12 bibliographic databases and archives (https://www.mdpi.com/journal/physiologia/indexing (accessed on 15 May 2026)). Since 2021, submissions to the journal have grown significantly; however, we rarely receive submissions in the field of plant physiology. This Editorial announces that we are taking steps to refine the journal’s aims and scope in order to concentrate its focus.
For these reasons, we are excluding plant physiology from the journal’s scope, and also lessening focus on comparative physiology, which now arguably represents a niche area of physiology research.
2. Updated Aim
Physiologia (ISSN 2673-9488) is an international, peer-reviewed open access journal aimed at publishing articles demonstrating conceptual advances across the realms of physiology, from humans to animals and cells. With a focus upon integrating molecular, cellular, systems and whole organismal function, the field of physiology has very long been recognised as one which advances our understanding of the constructs of life.
The journal publishes Research Papers, Reviews, Editorials, Communications, etc. Our aim is to encourage scientists to publish their experimental and theoretical results in as much detail as possible; full experimental details must be provided so that the results can be reproduced.
3. Updated Scope
Research fields of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Human Physiology: respiration, circulation, the blood system, motor functions, digestion, exercise physiology, pathophysiology, OMICs in physiology, etc.
- Animal physiology: internal physical and chemical functions of vertebrate and invertebrate animals, including reproduction, disease, and nutrition.
- Cellular physiology: the use of cell and organoid models to interrogate aspects of pre-clinical and clinical physiology.
- Comparative physiology
4. Future Prospects
This update will allow Physiologia to more accurately represent its scientific focus and to better serve researchers working in animal, human, and cellular physiology. By sharpening our scope, we aim to attract more targeted submissions, strengthen peer review, and increase the journal’s impact within these core communities.
With our editors, board members, and publisher, we invite you to submit your research to Physiologia and become part of a vibrant, interdisciplinary community. We hope you will consider Physiologia as your preferred journal for sharing impactful research, and we look forward to working with you to make this journal an essential resource in the field.
