Cover Story: Cooling advancement is crucial for increasing efficiency and power-to-weight ratio of an electric motor. The Taylor–Couette flow prevents the effective heat transfer from rotor to coolant jacket around the stator. The rotating thermosyphon loop (RTL) utilizes high phase-change heat transfer rates to transfer the loss power in rotor to air chambers underneath the coolant jacket. Along with the stirring effect of RTL in air chambers of the PMSEM, the maximum temperatures in rotor with the single- and twin-end RTLs are respectively reduced 8–14 °C and 10–22 °C from those without RTL at the speed and total electrical current between 1200 and 1500 rev/min and 1000 and 1200 A. Such an effective passive phase-change rotor cooling scheme permits further increases in the power density of an electric motor. View this paper
