Cover Story: What if fossil surfaces could be explored without the constraints of physical RTI, while preserving interpretative performance? Virtual Reflectance Transformation Imaging (VRTI) brings dynamic raking-light illumination to high-resolution 3D models, extending the possibilities of paleontological documentation. This cover story showcases VRTI applied to a dinosaur track from the Capellini Museum in Bologna within an open-source 3D workspace. Digital relighting enhances subtle surface relief and morphological features, supporting footprint interpretation and delineation. Comparative evaluation confirmed that VRTI achieves perceptual performance comparable to conventional physical RTI (p > 0.05). To support this approach, a standardized and FAIR-compliant 3D workspace was developed and published, encouraging researchers to adopt scalable workflows for cultural heritage documentation. View this paper
