The Neuropathology of Dementia edited by M. Esiri, V. M.-Y. Lee and J. Q. Trojanowski was published by Cambridge University Press in 2004. This second edition on the neuropathology of diseases causing dementia is both up-to-date and compelling. It offers contributions from a group of excellent experts providing actual knowledge in the field.
The textbook focuses on dementia-causing conditions that are treated separately and concisely in 15 chapters. Besides the detailed and precise description of pathological features, the reader finds information about epidemiology, clinical features, neuroimaging, genetics and pathogenesis. Additionally, the introductory chapters cover general practical aspects involved in diagnosis including morphometric methods and molecular diagnosis. Particularly interesting is the chapter dealing with the latest insights into neuroimaging illustrated with the example of the most prevalent dementia syndrome – Alzheimer’s disease. Finally, a whole chapter is devoted to advances in research of dementia using various transgenic mouse models. The text is complemented by both careful referencing to recent original literature and illustrations of high quality.
Overall, this book is highly recommendable not only to practising neuropathologists but also to old-age psychiatrists and neuroscientists involved in dementia diagnosis and research.
