Cover Story: The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the critical role of medical laboratory technologists (MLTs) in the healthcare system. Their expertise facilitated the surveillance of the virus and supported public health efforts to prevent its spread. However, the unprecedented challenges brought by the pandemic and the existing staff shortage placed a considerable strain on the laboratory workforce. In this descriptive qualitative study, we conducted focus groups with MLTs across Canada working during the pandemic to identify and understand their stressors and lessons learned through their lived experiences. Organizations and policymakers can use the study's findings to promote resilience among MLTs and ensure workforce sustainability to enhance preparedness for future public health emergencies.
