Cover Story: This paper proposes a phase-based pseudorange estimation and source localization algorithm to improve the accuracy of ultrashort baseline (USBL) systems. Conventional USBL systems estimate pseudorange by cross-correlating received chirp signals, but the limited sampling rate restricts precision, leading to reduced localization performance. Our method overcomes these limitations by accurately determining the number of wavelengths between the transducer and receiver and detecting the initial phase, enabling precise pseudorange estimation. Additionally, it compensates for phase variations caused by underwater channels. Through simulations and ocean experiments, our approach demonstrated superior localization performance compared to conventional methods. View this paper
