Coatings, Volume 8, Issue 2

2018 February - 39 articles

Cover Story: In principle, coatings cannot be adopted to modify the damping behaviour of mechanical components in free and forced vibration conditions, since the contribution of the dissipative energy with respect to elastic energy is low if high stiffness components are taken into account. Moreover, no magic material solution can be adopted to ensure high stiffness, high strength and high vibrational damping behaviour as well. Some experimental results showed that the application of most known thin coating solutions on a thin, slender beam, generally lead to unsatisfactory results from the damping increase standpoint, but it was outlined that dissipation arises at the interface between any two contiguous surface layers. By properly designing a multilayer coating composition, the damping vibrational behaviour can be tailored to suit user specifications. View this paper
