Cover Story: Biodegradable metallic foams are extensively studied for bone substitute applications, especially for load-bearing implants and bone tissue engineering scaffolds. The biocompatibility of implant surface is of specific interest since the surface of biomedical devices is in direct contact with the living organism. Hence, many scientists are focusing on the modification of the surface of the biomaterial in order to improve its biocompatibility and obtain desirable mechanical properties and degradation behavior. Polymeric coatings may play an important role when enhancing corrosion rate is necessary. Bioceramic or inorganic coatings, on the other hand, lower the corrosion speed but can greatly influence the biological performance of the material. View this paper
