Cover Story: Chronic diseases have become one of the primary causes of death and disability worldwide. Biosensing materials that provide accurate and reliable measurement of specific biomarkers characteristic to chronic conditions could provide a tool to complement precision medicine. Here, the authors propose and demonstrate an optical sensing platform based on potentially implantable hydrogels containing bioactive microparticles that consistently respond to repeated glucose challenges. Use of specialized nanoengineered coatings on the microparticles is shown to allow tuning of the response to match the conditions of use (e.g., low or high levels of oxygen and/or glucose).
