Cover Story: Reared in small flocks and under outdoor conditions, the productive performance of the hens changed according to genotype, season, and age. Productivity is highly influenced, also, by the rearing system and environmental factors, offering the local breeds opportunities to adapt livestock to low-input environment. Recognizing the diversity of these breeds, in particular the Portuguese chicken breeds, admitting their unique qualities, and considering that the patrimony that they represent belongs to the whole society and, as such, must be supported and defended, it is therefore imperative that breeding strategies be implemented to value them, from their territory of production to consumers and society in general.
