Cover Story: MicroRNAs (miRs) are small non-coding RNAs that negatively regulate gene expression, fine tuning the physiological processes involved in proliferation, apoptosis, differentiation and development. Dysregulated miR expression has been associated with the pathophysiology of a variety of diseases, including heart disease, cancer, diabetes mellitus and kidney disease. A recognition that miRs influence the function of all segments of the nephron and that dysregulation occurs at all stages of kidney disease from disease onset to the final common pathways of CKD progression explains the intense interest in studying miRs as minimally invasive biomarkers and novel therapeutic targets. This review focuses on the potential role of miRs in the pathogenesis of IgAN, the biomarker discovery studies reporting miR perturbations in IgAN and the new studies using RNA interference strategies to treat IgAN.
